WHEN HE ARRIVED IN THE HUGE presentation room, the hubbub ceased; there was an air of reverence for the severe man who held the leadership of the FBI. There in front was Mr. Kenagan, who was in his fifties, a tall, strong man, with a shaved head and wearing a fine suit, darned to the same level as the position he held; he was famous for having been one of Gregory Evans' great companions when they dismantled the Italian mafia in the 1980s in New York.
— Greg, good to see you, partner.
Greg just waved, trying to remain anonymous; he didn't like to draw too much attention unnecessarily.
Some were still looking for a place to sit when he began:
— Gentlemen, let's not waste time with unnecessary introductions; I'm here to closely monitor the investigations we'll be carrying out from now on. There's no doubt that we're facing a terrorist operation and our goal is to find out who was responsible for detonating the explosive, as well as which family they belonged to.
— Director? Will the country adopt a new internal policy for foreigners?
— No Muslim will enter our borders for an indefinite period of time. We have orders to deport any individual who has any kind of connection with those responsible for the attack, whatever that may be...
WHILE FLOYD KENAGAN spoke, Martin grumbled in Gregory's ear:
— These guys from D.C.... They're so used to filling out reports that they don't know how to follow a single lead...
Gregory just scratched his chin surreptitiously; he didn't like it when Martin was right, that was always a bad omen.
FLOYD CONTINUED:
— At the moment, we don't have any information that could lead us to the suspects. Unless that group that claimed responsibility for the acts, but didn't mention any names and the image of the man doesn't match anyone known to federal police around the world, our only starting point is the recordings from security cameras and those present at the scene. I want the entire Bureau focused on this from now on; no parallel investigations are authorized until further notice.
The meeting continued tediously for a few more minutes, until Floyd released everyone to their tasks.
