HER RELATIONSHIP WITH THE MAFIA was, in fact, driven by the consequences of the inertia she had maintained throughout her life. With no future, no prospects in life that would allow her to take care of Katherine, her young wife, and even less teachings that would allow her to foresee her future, as much as weigh her conscience about what she would have to do, the gateway to the Capretti Family was, in her eyes, nothing more than a call to a better-paying job.
The captain of the family said:
— I told him about you. I said that I have been following you and that you learn quickly. He was interested and wants to see how you do at work.
— Yes, well, let's go then... — said Tommy, threatening to get up and leave.
— There's no need to rush, I'll take you there, today! This is your chance, son, you have potential, don't waste it.
The old captain smiled and looked at him with a look of pleasure, leaning back in his seat.
— Now enjoy your breakfast, boy!
The waitress brought Tommy's order. Everything was ready, the toasted bacon slices and two fried eggs. Also the coffee. The young man was astonished, looking at the plate, enveloped in a mixture of distrust and anger.
Laughing, the captain commented:
— Doubt sucks, doesn't it?
Tommy just looked at the old man and gave him a small smile. Carl Benedetti smiled again, with an air of satisfaction, let out a sigh and said:
— Few have had the chance to grow so quickly in the family. You are having this privilege, just like I did. The vast majority spent years cleaning up messes until they became someone. Others died even before that. I can even remember how difficult things were in the beginning, when I started. And you, who had nothing in mind when I met you. Who would have thought that a delivery boy could rise like this...?
