_Chapter 11: Family Secrets_
Axel's words lingered in Emily's mind: "You're the only one who sees me."
She wanted to understand him better, to uncover the secrets beneath his tough exterior.
"Axel, can I ask you something?" Emily said, her voice cautious.
Axel looked up from his book. "Anything."
"What's your family like?" Emily asked.
Axel's expression faltered, and for a moment, Emily saw vulnerability.
"My dad's gone," Axel said, his voice low. "Left when I was a kid. My mom's...struggling."
Emily's heart went out to him. "I'm sorry."
Axel's gaze dropped. "It's not easy, but I take care of her."
Emily realized Axel's toughness was a shield, protecting those he loved.
As they packed up to leave, Emily noticed a photo on Axel's phone.
"Who's that?" Emily asked.
Axel's eyes clouded. "My little sister, Mia. She passed away a few years ago."
Emily's breath caught. "I'm so sorry."
Axel's voice cracked. "She was my world."
In that moment, Emily understood Axel's pain and his fierce loyalty.
As they walked out of the library, Emily took Axel's hand, offering comfort.
Axel didn't pull away.
Their hands intertwined, a spark of electricity ran through them.
