Elara wrapped her hands tighter around the warm mug, letting the fragrant tea steam curl against her face as she thought over his words. "I'll be careful," she said after a moment, her tone more thoughtful than resigned. "At any rate, I think the Countess is the least of my worries. Even if she tries anything else, I'm pretty sure I can handle it."
Caspian's gaze softened slightly, though his jaw remained tight. "You underestimate the tenacity of a viper like Countess Volecrest, Elara. Ever since I became Grand Duke, she's been actively involved in keeping any woman other than her granddaughter as far away from me as she could get them. Of course, I never particularly minded as I never intended to marry, but it just shows how...intent she is."
