Chapter 4 - One Step Closer...

Winter in Boston is known for heavy snowfall and extreme cold. The biting wind from the Charles River is particularly notorious, leading to the joke that M.I.T. students hibernate and study hard all winter due to the cold.

One day, an unexpected problem arose at the research institute. Chief researcher Mark slipped on the icy road and was suddenly involved in a traffic accident, causing delays in the development of a biomedical AI platform in collaboration with NVIDIA.

Associate Professor Helen conveyed the news about Mark to Daniel with a serious expression.

"Professor, it seems Mark has had an accident."

"He broke his leg in the traffic accident and will need to stay in the hospital for about two months."

Daniel grasped the back of his neck and looked up at the ceiling, muttering to himself, "Two months...!"

Iris, who had been listening to their conversation, quietly raised her hand.

"Professor Daniel, the project has become difficult due to Dr. Mark's accident, but I think I can help."

"Before coming here, I had experience using Clara Parabricks, which Dr. Mark was working on, during my internship at NVIDIA."

At the Broad Institute, Mark was the only researcher skilled in handling Clara software, making her experience a realistic alternative with high potential. However, it was risky to assign the project to her, who had just joined the team.

Daniel cautiously responded to Iris's proposal.

"Iris, your experience is indeed our most realistic option. But it might be risky to assign the project to you, who just joined."

However, Iris confidently replied to Daniel.

"I understand that. That's why I need your help. If you could assist me just a little, I believe we can succeed."

Daniel appeared to contemplate for a moment but accepted her proposal. "Alright, let's give it a try. Iris, I believe in your passion and experience."

Iris responded with a slightly excited voice, "Thank you, Professor Daniel. I will do my best."

While Daniel looked at Iris, who resembled the bright and lively young Adele, he found himself with an opportunity to observe her more closely, even though he couldn't approach her recklessly.

Eventually, with Daniel's help, Iris successfully integrated NVIDIA's Clara Parabricks into the Broad Institute's Terra cloud platform, significantly reducing the genome data analysis time.

Moreover, Iris was recognized for the project's success and was assigned a new project to integrate NVIDIA's BioNeMo into the Terra cloud platform.

"Iris, that's amazing! I can't believe the genome data analysis time has been reduced from 24 hours to just 1 hour," Daniel said, looking at Iris with a bright expression.

"Thank you, Professor! It's all thanks to your help. It was tough at first, but it went more smoothly than I expected when we proceeded step by step," Iris replied with a bright smile.

"I'm thinking of assigning you the BioNeMo project. I'm really looking forward to it! What plans do you have?" Daniel encouraged Iris.

"First, I plan to optimize the multilingual processing method. I will try to maximize the advantages of BioNeMo to improve efficiency."

Feeling Daniel's genuine interest, Iris shook off the lingering burden in her heart. The pressure and uncertainty she had felt during the project began to lighten, thanks to Daniel's encouragement and support.

Through her conversation with Daniel, she realized how much his belief in her empowered her, and she felt a sense of relief knowing she was not alone. Excitement for the new project began to blossom within her.
