"Yuta! It's late, so switch off the tv right now and go to bed." Mom ordered.
"Al…right."
Yuta headed back to his bedroom as soon as his mom ordered and fell asleep.
The sun was shining brightly in the horizon when Yuta woke up the following morning to the sounds of birds chirping. His body was dripping with sweat from the dream he experienced as he jerked out of bed. 'Thank God it's a dream.'
He did his usual morning routine and brushed his teeth before heading downstairs to get some milk to start the day.
He started jogging through his neighborhood after finishing his milk and leaving the house for a quick warm-up. When he reached a certain point, he paused to gather his breath.
After taking his time to regain composure, he decided to go back home to work on his quirk before going to the dojo.
After arriving home, he took his time practicing his quirk more and made an effort to adhere to the procedure he had written down from his previous studies on his sand quirk.
"That's tough."After making numerous attempts and consistently failing at each one, he realized. "That's it for today." He went inside his house to get his bath and made his way to Isshin Dojo.
Getting to the dojo, he braced himself up and slid the door open. All attention turned towards Yuta as he made his entrance and quickly changed to his doji uniform.
He focused and adopted the combat position he had mastered after numerous attempts and setbacks without letting up. Following the same procedure as the other children, he began tossing several punches into the air.
Isshin stood at the left corner of the dojo glancing at the kids as they all perfected their strikes and kicks including Yuta who was a newbie.
After a lot of training in the dojo, Isshin dismissed everyone as Yuta made his way back home without wasting much time.
His breath was labored, and as the adrenaline in his body wore off, exhaustion set in. After a hard day of training in the dojo, he finally made it home and instantly napped in the living room.
He opened his eyes and gazed at the clock seeing it was 4:15 pm as he ran to the refrigerator and microwave something to eat.
When his phone buzzed with a notification, he hurried over and scooped it up from the couch. "Hmm?" He saw a lot of missed calls from an unknown number but he quickly recognized the number was foreign.
Yuta gazed at the foreign number on his phone, wondering who it may be. His smartphone buzzed again with the same foreign number just as he was ready to put it down, and he took the call hesitantly.
"H-Hello." Yuta said with a low tone.
"I'm I speaking with Yuta?"
"Hmm? Sure. Who's this, if I may ask?"
"I'm so sorry for the sudden call and I'm so sorry to say this."
"What's with the apology and how do you know my name?"
"I'm Mei's uncle. I heard both of you were great friends and decided to get into the U.A. hero school together."
"Oh, I'm sorry for my rudeness towards you because I thought this might be a scammer or so I thought. And yes, we both planned to get into the U.A. and be the greatest hero the world has ever seen."
"...."
"Hello?"
"I'm sorry to say this, but..."
"Hey uncle, what's wrong? And are you crying?"
"I'm s-s-sorry, Yuta."
"Why keep apologizing? Please calm down and speak to me, uncle."
"Mei.."
"Mei? What happened to Mei? We discussed yesterday after I came back from training. So what's wrong with Mei?"
"Mei….Mei…Mei is dead."
"Hmmm? Is this some kind of joke or are you pranking me, uncle? Or did I misheard you?"
"I'm sorry I wasn't able to protect her."
"Hey, stop playing with me. What do you mean you weren't able to protect her? Was she hurt?" Yuta exclaimed as he became furious.
"Yuta.. Mei was caught up in an accident from a hero and villain fight and that took her life….I'm sorry, Yuta." Mei's uncle began to sober up with tears from the other end of the call.
"Eh? Mei? Dead?" Yuta couldn't believe what his ears were hearing.
"She went to get something from the mall and she heard some heroes are dealing with a villain as she rushed over to the scene and she was caught up in the destruction caused by the hero and villain."
"Tell me this isn't some kind of joke… Just yesterday, we talked for a while through the phone and now you're telling me she is dead?" Yuta's phone slipped away from his hand and hit the ground when his brain got numbed.
"I'm so sorry, Yuta. I was called to the scene to identify the corpse of the girl and that's when I noticed it was Mei…. She lost an eye and her left arm with blood all over the place."
"....." Yuta's mind couldn't process all the information coming from Mei's uncle who was abroad.
"Yuta…. Sorry I wasn't the best uncle to protect her…..I'm sorry…."
"Mei is dead? What about our promise to become the strongest hero? Tell me, uncle… What I'm I supposed to say…. I never imagined this and why didn't you follow her when she went out?" Yuta's voice began to fade away.
"I wasn't able to keep her safe and I'm sorry for putting you into this mess and sorrowful nightmare. I'm sorry, Yuta."
"Damn it."
"I'm sorry you weren't able to see her one last time, Yuta. Will you grant Mei's final wish?"
"That…I'm sorry but I can't decide right now, uncle. I guess I'll have to be alone for a while to think straight."
"It's alright, Yuta. Take your time and for the sake of Mei, please continue being a hero and I promise she'll be happy to see you fulfill her dream in the afterlife."
"Okay, uncle."
"Once again, Yuta. I'm so so sorry for not being able to protect her and please continue to stay safe."
"...."
"Alright, I'll be ending the call now and this is my number in case you need anything anyday, and for the sake of Mei, I'll be willing to help you."
"Okay."
Mei's uncle ended the call shortly after that as Yuta dropped down to the floor with both knees. Tears slid down his face as he began to mourn the death of his friend.
'Why can't it be me? Why can't it be someone else? Why was it her? My only friend who stayed by my side since we were kids and even got to celebrate my birthday with me? Mei ... .why did you decide to leave me?' Yuta cursed himself as tears slid down his face.
Yuta cried for over 30 minutes as his consciousness faded away and collapsed to the floor.
Yuta, as a kid, has never thought of how it feels to lose someone so important and that made him fall into a nightmare and that haunted him for a while.
Few hours later, his mom drove back from work and entered the house but to her surprise, she saw her son lying unconsciously on the floor with tears in his face.
"Yuta!" She exclaimed in shock as he dropped her purse on the floor and charged towards her son. "Yuta! Is everything okay?"
Her mind was racing so fast as she tried to wake her son and suddenly, Yuta managed to open his eyes closely.
"Sweetie, I'm home." His mom hugged him and continued. "Sweetie, what happened? Why are you crying?"
Yuta took a few seconds to digest the questions asked by his mother as she slowly opened his mouth. "Mom!" He exclaimed and burst into tears once more in his mother's arms.
"Is alright, sweetie. So tell me what's wrong or what happened?" His mom became curious.
"Mei."
"Mei? Isn't that your female friend from back then?"
"Yes, mom. Mei…Mei is…"
"What happened, sweetie? What about Mei?"
"Mei is…Mei is dead."
"Huh?" His mom was confused as she find herself dumbfounded. She leaned back a little to process the words that came from Yuta's mouth.
"Mom, Mei is dead. I got a call from her uncle a few hours ago and he told me she was caught up in a destruction caused by a villian and a hero on her way back from the mall." Yuta's brain was still numbed as he managed to get those words out which left his mother speechless….
