"If you keep acting like you don't know me, I would let the world know that you are my wife.."
My hands clenched at my sides while I tried my best to control my breathing.
Was it not enough that I said I lost my memories?
I turned to look at him while keeping my face as blank as possible.
"I don't know who you are but if you claim that I'm your wife, then you would have to prove it."
Declan's face had no reaction and he kept staring at me like was going to bore holes in my head.
"Can we find a more private place?" I asked while glancing at my watch.
The one thing I didn't like was breaking promises to my little treasures, since I had promised that I was on my way, I didn't want to wait here.
However, I also needed to know what the fuck Declan was talking about.
I was his wife?
Five years ago, after seeing him and Stella at the Helios Club, I had signed the divorce papers and scanned them back as soon as I got back to the hotel.
The papers were signed, so how could I still be his wife.
As our car moved along, I would glance back every now and then to confirm that his BMW was still behind us.
"His company would have been a perfect match for us to work with, however, you constantly denied the collaboration. Do you really not know him?" Zara asked from the side, her eyes peering at me intently.
"There's something familiar about him but he triggers an headache anytime I see him."
We finally settled on a cosy cafe that was along the road and I saw Declan's long legs stepping outside the car as I got down.
Seated opposite each other, I glared at him before giving the waiter my order.
"I'll like to believe that I have more exceptional taste than this, Mr Ellington, do tell how it is possible that I am your wife."
I wanted to take the lead by starting the conversation.
Declan leaned back in his seat, his blue eyes shining with interest.
"I guess having Stefan Helios in your bed means you have all the funds needed to gamble on artificial intelligence," Declan started and my heart turned cold.
How did he find out?
"I mean, I should have known when you ran into his arms that same night. So tell me…" he leaned in, his tall frame still domineering even while seated.
"How does it feel being his side plaything that he keeps hidden?"
As understanding dawned on me, my lips curled up into a smirk. Yet, I couldn't help the disappointment that was trickling through me.
Just like before, he still thought the worst of me. Rather than believe the million possibilities out there, he still chose to believe that I had to have slept around to make the money I needed to start FuturaLab.
"Let's say I'm his plaything, then how could I possibly be your wife?"
Declan chuckled and then moved away from the table to lean back in his chair.
"That's exactly what has me puzzled, Mrs Ellington."
"You have five minutes, if I don't have a proof, I would be calling the police and the court on you," I threatened, my eyes narrowing.
I had thought that five years was enough to have moved past it.
However, every word and insult that he sent my way had me feeling the pain that I had spent so much time burying.
"Cut the bullshit, Daisy, I know you remember me all too well."
