Chapter 3 - Chapter 2: Good Luck

Adrian's gaze flickered over the young woman standing before him. Elena was striking, with jet-black hair cascading in loose waves down to her shoulders. Her eyes, a sharp, piercing grey, were partially hidden behind a pair of stylish glasses that seemed both practical and fashionable. She wore a form-fitting black dress that accentuated her slim figure, its neckline dipping just enough to hint at elegance without overstatement. The dress was buttoned down the front, its dark fabric absorbing the dim light around them. Her posture was confident, almost defiant, as she stood waiting for his response.

But Adrian wasn't one to be swayed by appearances. He continued munching on his bun, the cat at his side snuggling closer into his warmth. His light hazel eyes remained impassive, studying her without a trace of the admiration she might have been used to receiving.

Elena's voice, though urgent, carried an edge of frustration. "I need your help, Adrian. It's a matter of life and death."

Adrian raised an eyebrow, a hint of skepticism creeping into his expression. "You must be crazy," he said, his voice flat. "What makes you think I'd jump up and help just because you show up out of nowhere?"

Elena took a step closer, her frustration evident. "I've heard about you, Adrian. I know you're not as indifferent as you pretend to be. You've helped people before."

Adrian sighed, leaning back against the bench. "That was a long time ago. Things have changed."

She looked around, as if trying to find the right words to convince him. "Please, Adrian. They've taken my sister. I don't have anyone else to turn to."

For a moment, something flickered in Adrian's eyes—an old pain, perhaps a memory. But it was gone as quickly as it appeared. He shook his head, taking another bite of his bun. "And what makes you think I care?"

Elena's determination didn't waver. "Because you're not the monster you pretend to be. I can see it in your eyes."

Adrian chuckled, a low, humorless sound. "You see a lot, don't you? Well, I'm not interested. Go find someone else to play hero."

Elena's shoulders slumped slightly, but she didn't leave. "I can pay you," she offered quietly. "Whatever it takes."

Adrian's eyes narrowed. "You think I'm for sale? That you can just buy my help?"

She hesitated, realizing she was on thin ice. "No. I just… I thought maybe…"

He cut her off, standing up and dusting off his hands. "You thought wrong. Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got better things to do."

As he turned to leave, the cat meowed softly, rubbing against his leg. Adrian sighed, reaching down to scoop it up. He glanced back at Elena one last time, his expression softening just a fraction. "Good luck," he said, before walking away into the night.

Elena stood there, watching him go, her mind racing. She wasn't going to give up that easily. But for now, she had to find another way.
