After hearing Shisui's words, Nozuki felt reassured. Yes, that guy—Reiki—was always reliable.
As the battle raged on, the undead legion relentlessly attacked with overwhelming numbers. However, compared to the beginning, the ferocity of their onslaught had weakened. The energizing potion had revitalized the ninjas, filling them with renewed strength and determination. Some puppets from the undead legion were destroyed before they could even reassemble.
These ninjas were not amateurs. Their experience and the steady supply of medicine boosted their confidence.
Suddenly, the seemingly waning undead forces surged with unexpected vigor. The previously manageable puppets became harder to combat, and the number of injured ninjas began to rise sharply.
"Reiki, it looks like the demon has made its move. The injured are increasing—they're trying to drain your energy and weaken you," Shisui said as he arrived with an injured ninja, concern in his voice. "Should you take a break? These wounds need urgent care."
"I know," Reiki replied. "But do you think stopping now to replenish my chakra will help? The undead army preys on human life energy. If I stop treating them, I'll just have to spend more energy protecting these wounded. Which do you think is the more stable approach?"
Reiki smiled, determined as ever.
Shisui nodded, understanding. "I'll keep an eye on you. Just don't push your limits too far." With that, he disappeared back into the fray.
For half a day, the battle continued.
Suddenly, a powerful figure fell from the sky, landing right in front of Reiki. Anyone who stood in its path was pierced by purple-black energy tendrils. The demon's goal was clear: intimidate Reiki and force him to stop his medical efforts, allowing the demon to recover more quickly. But Reiki hadn't wavered—he had only sped up.
The demon, frustrated at its plan backfiring and realizing Maitreya might act soon, decided to attack Reiki directly.
"Ssss..."
The ninjas nearby retreated as the monstrous being advanced. Reiki, who had just finished treating an injured patient, stood up calmly.
"So, you've come at last?" Reiki faced the corpse, unflinching.
"You already knew?" the demon's voice hissed from the possessed body. "Aren't you afraid of death?"
"Death? It's terrifying, sure. But you can't kill me," Reiki said confidently, popping a potion into his mouth.
The demon hesitated, its voice faltering. "You... You're with Maitreya, aren't you?"
Before it could finish, Reiki raised his hand, revealing a mark that made the demon recoil slightly.
"You're afraid to consume me, aren't you?"
Just as Reiki finished speaking, the scenery shifted. The battlefield faded, replaced by the familiar streets of Konoha. The mark on Reiki's hand vanished, replaced by a simple piece of food—a ham sausage.
"An illusion?" Reiki pondered. No, this was different—it was a memory. Not his, but the original host's memory.
"I'm sorry, Reiki. Your parents… they didn't make it off the battlefield," a voice from the past echoed, and a sharp pain struck his heart. He found himself in a solemn garden, a bouquet of white flowers replacing the sausage in his hand.
His parents were gone.
More memories flooded in, one after another.
"So, you're trying to dig up my humanity's weaknesses?" Reiki muttered. "But demon, you'll never guess—these aren't even my memories." A smirk crossed his lips as the potion he'd taken cleared his mind. He only needed to wait for the illusion to end, and then he'd be safe.
"Reiki, the company is letting people go."
"We're sorry. We know you've given it your all."
"Let's break up. I'm heading back home for an arranged marriage."
"Reiki, your father's in the hospital. It'll cost 50,000 ryo!"
Out of nowhere, bizarre information flowed into Reiki's consciousness.
"What is this...?" Reiki's eyes narrowed. "Demon!" Rage surged through him as he realized the demon was trying to manipulate his original soul.
"Fine, let's see how you handle real illusions!" Reiki declared. "Activate Tsukuyomi Experience Card!"
A card materialized in his hand. Crushing it, crows erupted around him, shattering the false reality.
Suddenly, the corpse stood before Reiki, its eyes wide in shock as the illusion dissipated.
"H-How is this possible? How do you possess such eye power?!" the demon stammered, panic setting in.
"You don't need to know that," Reiki said coldly. "Demon, you're defeated. Need treatment for that?" He grinned mockingly.
The demon, momentarily disoriented, felt anger swell within it. A violent aura burst from the corpse, and purple-black tendrils lashed out in fury. Even if the ban failed, it vowed to kill Reiki. If this young man lived, he would become an insurmountable challenge to its freedom in the future.
It could sense the familiar, threatening aura surrounding Reiki—the very power that had haunted the demon over the past days.
