Chapter 14 - Chapter 14:Cause of his blindness

 DAMOND CHRIS

I felt a surge of confusion and frustration wash over me. "But you told me I needed a cornea transplant! You said you were trying to find a donor!" My voice was shaky, revealing the storm of emotions churning inside me.

"Please, let me explain," he said, genuine concern in his tone.

Impatience bubbled up, and I pressed him. "Then go ahead," I insisted, desperate for answers to cut through the chaos.

"I've just found out that your blindness might not be permanent," he said, his words hitting me like a jolt of electricity. "Every time we run your tests, the results are improving, showing that your eyes are actually in surprisingly good shape. You don't need a cornea transplant after all."

The weight of this news hit me hard. "Are you telling me this only now? I've been blind for almost 20 years! I don't even know what my wife looks like!" My anger spilled out uncontrollably.

"Just listen," he said, his tone calm and steady. "Have you noticed any blurriness in your vision? That's actually a positive sign—it means things are getting better. You just need to keep taking your medication. This new treatment has been thoroughly tested and proven to work. I'll make sure you get it as soon as possible."

His words were reassuring, but I was too overwhelmed to respond; my mind raced with the possibilities of what he had just said.

Could it really be true? My blindness might only be temporary? Only days ago, I had seen a faint light filtering through my window when I woke up—a strange and fleeting moment. But why had I suddenly been swallowed back into darkness? How was any of this possible?

"What does Daisy look like? And my parents—do they still look youthful, or have the years changed them?"

My thoughts spun around chaotically. After two long decades in darkness, I felt both lost and strangely hopeful. Was this the hope I had been longing for? Could I truly regain my sight?

"Sir, sir, sir!" Moore's urgent voice broke through my thoughts, pulling me back to reality.

"Sir, we've arrived," he said as the car came to a stop. I opened the door and stepped out, grounding myself in the familiar chaos of the busy office environment. My heart raced, a mix of excitement and possibility flaring in my chest as I walked inside.

 FLASHBACK

I used to be a carefree boy, full of joy and laughter that seemed to dance on the wind. Friends and family admired me, but it was my older brother, Desmond, who meant the world to me.

We were inseparable, going on countless adventures together every weekend while our laughter floated through the golden sunlight, like a sweet tune. We had a similar look, but Desmond had a charm and good looks that drew people to him, like moths to a flame.

At school, he was always the popular one. Teachers praised his smarts, and girls were drawn to him, wanting to be near him like playful puppies around their favorite person. I often watched him in admiration, feeling the warmth of his presence as he lit up every room he entered.

But everything changed one fateful day that I will never forget. Our lives took a drastic turn when my dad had a terrible accident and was rushed to the hospital.

The news shattered our family's routine, filling our lives with worry and uncertainty. My mom, sister, brother, and I rushed to the hospital, our hearts heavy with anxiety.

As we came out of the cold, clinical hospital, I found myself lagging behind, lost in worry about my dad's condition. Just as I stepped into the bright sunlight, I suddenly heard Desmond calling out.

"Damond, watch out!" he shouted urgently. In that moment, I realized my carefree days were quickly fading away, replaced by a harsh reality that required strength.

My heart raced as I turned around and saw a car speeding towards me, its headlights cutting through the fading light like a knife. Panic overwhelmed me, leaving me frozen in fear.

Just when I thought my fate was sealed, Desmond sprang into action, driven by love and bravery. In an instant, he pushed me out of the way with incredible strength.

I barely escaped being hit, but the sudden shove sent me tumbling to the ground. I fell hard, my face hitting the rough pavement. Pain surged through my cheek, and I felt warmth trickling from around my eyes as the realization hit me—I had hurt myself in the fall.

A rush of warmth enveloped me, but it felt mixed with the sharp taste of blood. I could faintly hear voices cutting through the fog, urgently asking for an ambulance and help. Then, everything started to blur, and before I knew it, I was pulled into darkness, losing consciousness completely.
