Chapter 20 - Shadows of the Forgotten

The Ark drifted in silence after their encounter with the derelict ship, but the relic they'd retrieved pulsated with an energy that filled the room. Orion, Mara, and Dray stood around it, each feeling the weight of the memories it held. Riko joined them, her eyes wide with curiosity mixed with apprehension as she approached the device.

"What do we even do with this?" Riko asked, her voice barely a whisper. "It's like... it's alive somehow."

Orion nodded, still studying the relic's intricate, crystalline design. Its glow pulsed, almost like a heartbeat, and he couldn't shake the feeling that the device was observing them just as closely. "Whatever this is, it's not just a recording or a simple object. The beings who made it infused it with something—knowledge, maybe even parts of themselves."

Mara, always analytical, reached out carefully, her fingertips hovering over the surface. "There must be a way to access its information. If the Keepers before us left this behind, they wanted someone to use it."

Orion's gaze shifted to her. "And they weren't random explorers; they were guardians, like us. They died protecting something they believed was worth saving."

Dray broke in, his face tense. "Then we're no different. Whatever they were trying to protect... it's our responsibility zingle now, too." He looked at the relic, his voice softening. "But why didn't they succeed? They were stronger, maybe more advanced. What went wrong?"

Orion considered his words, the gravity of them settling over the group. "We may never know. But if this device contains even a piece of the knowledge they left behind, it could be what we need to defeat the Devourers."

Mara took a deep breath, then nodded resolutely. "So let's find out."

She moved closer to the device, carefully adjusting a small scanner she'd brought to try and decode any energy patterns it emitted. As she worked, the lights flickered, and the relic's glow intensified, almost as if it were responding. A low hum filled the room, and suddenly the relic pulsed brighter, casting strange shadows that danced along the walls.

"Is it... reacting?" Riko whispered, backing away slightly.

Mara gave a sharp nod, focused on her readings. "Whatever it's doing, it's trying to communicate. The data is complex—much more than I expected."

Before she could say anything more, a wave of energy burst from the relic, enveloping them all in a field of strange, translucent light. For a brief, dizzying moment, they were each transported somewhere else. Flashes of alien worlds and civilizations filled their minds, fragments of memories that didn't belong to them, images of galaxies under siege, collapsing under the wrath of the Devourers.

Orion struggled to keep his footing, his vision blurring. He saw visions of the Keepers, beings who resembled humans but seemed older, timeless, as if they'd existed since the dawn of the cosmos. The visions showed their lives, their sacrifices, each one waging a desperate, losing battle against the Devourers.

He gasped, snapping back to reality, finding himself once again in the Ark's cold, metallic room. Around him, the others looked equally shaken, their eyes wide with the knowledge they'd glimpsed.

Dray rubbed his temples, his voice barely a whisper. "They weren't just warriors. They were... protectors, scientists, leaders. They dedicated everything they had to stop the Devourers."

"And still they lost," Riko murmured, her voice hollow. "If they couldn't stop them, what chance do we have?"

Orion shook his head, a fire igniting within him. "They left this relic behind as a guide. They believed someone would come after them who could finish what they started. That's us."

Mara, still visibly shaken, looked at him. "But how? What are we supposed to do? That vision... it showed us their failures, their losses. Maybe it's just a warning."

Orion clenched his fists. "No, it's a message. The Keepers lost because they were isolated, scattered across their worlds. We're united. We have a mission, and we know what's at stake."

Riko lifted her head, a spark of determination returning to her eyes. "Then let's keep moving. Whatever's out there, whatever secrets the Keepers left... we'll find them."

Dray and Mara nodded, the weariness in their faces replaced by a fierce resolve. They were no longer just explorers or survivors—they were the last hope in a battle that spanned ages. And they would see it through.

Orion turned to Riko, his voice steady. "Set course for the nearest habitable system. We don't know what's out there, but every clue we find will bring us closer to understanding the Devourers. We'll gather resources, we'll learn, and we'll prepare."

Riko nodded, already moving to input the new coordinates. The Ark's engines hummed to life, the familiar sensation of acceleration pressing them against their seats. With each passing star, they ventured deeper into the unknown, ready to uncover whatever secrets the galaxy held.
