Chapter 22 - The Descent

The Ark descended through the planet's atmosphere, breaking through layers of mist and dense clouds that veiled the world in secrecy. As they neared the surface, the strange glow of rivers winding across the terrain lit up the darkened sky, casting an eerie light over the land below. The haunting beauty of the scene was only interrupted by the lingering echo of the cryptic message: "Only shadows await."

Orion watched from the viewport, his gaze hardening as tension gripped him. Beside him, Mara ran final checks on their equipment, her movements swift but betraying a hint of unease.

"We should be cautious," she muttered, glancing out at the towering trees that rose from the mist. "If this place holds Keeper relics, they could be heavily guarded."

Riko adjusted her headset, scanning for energy signatures. "There's a massive concentration of energy deep underground. It's faint but organized. Whatever the Keepers left here, it's buried beneath the surface."

Dray, usually quick with a quip, was silent, his eyes fixed on the landscape. "Feels like we're walking into a trap," he said finally. "It's almost too quiet."

Orion nodded, the weight of their mission settling on his shoulders. "We stick together and stay alert. Whatever we find, we're getting out with answers."

The Ark landed on a small, open field at the edge of a dense forest. Strange, iridescent plants covered the ground, and the air held a faint, metallic scent that seemed out of place. As the crew prepared to disembark, a low hum filled the air, a static thrum like the heartbeat of the world itself.

Orion led the team out, their boots sinking slightly into the soft, damp earth. The thick vegetation muffled their steps, but every rustle of leaves, every shadow that flickered, made the tension in the air palpable. It felt as though the very land was watching them.

Riko held up a scanner, her brow furrowing as the readings spiked. "I'm picking up movement. Something's out there... closing in on us."

They barely had time to react before a dark shape exploded from the shadows, swift and silent. It moved like liquid night, a creature unlike anything they had ever seen—a serpentine form with countless legs, each shimmering with an otherworldly glow, like a twisted, living centipede of shadows and light.

"Get back!" Orion shouted, instinctively drawing his weapon and firing. But the creature evaded the blast, its movements too quick, too fluid, slipping around the shot with unnatural agility.

Dray lunged forward, releasing a burst of kinetic energy that sent the creature skittering back, but only briefly. It reformed, as though it were composed of smoke and shadows, shifting and adapting with each attack.

"This thing... it's learning," Mara yelled, firing another round. "It's adapting to us!"

Orion's mind raced. "We need to outsmart it. Riko, can you scan for any weaknesses?"

Riko was already tapping furiously on her device, narrowly dodging a strike from the creature as it reared up, splitting into multiple forms before merging back together. "It's not alive—it's an energy construct! Target its core, near its head! The glowing section!"

Orion nodded sharply to Dray and Mara. "Move in. Pin it down, and we'll take it out together. Riko, when it exposes its core, take the shot."

With calculated precision, the crew moved in, circling the creature and firing in a pattern designed to force it into Riko's line of sight. As the creature contorted, trying to dodge, its core became exposed. Riko didn't hesitate. She aimed and fired, the shot hitting its mark.

The creature let out a screech that echoed through the clearing, its body convulsing as it dissolved into mist, disappearing back into the forest.

The sudden silence was thick and unnerving, broken only by the crew's labored breaths.

"Well, that was… something," Dray muttered, still catching his breath. A grin spread across his face, despite his pale complexion. "Nice shooting, Riko."

She gave a small, nervous smile, shrugging it off. "Let's hope that was the only one."

Orion remained vigilant, scanning the trees around them. "We need to move fast. That thing was a guardian, and if the Keepers were trying to hide something down here, it's only the beginning."

They pressed on, following the energy readings deeper into the forest. The terrain shifted, growing rockier, the ground uneven as if shaped by ancient, deliberate forces. The path led them into a deep canyon where strange carvings marked the stone walls, symbols pulsing faintly with the same energy as the relic they had brought with them.

Mara traced one of the symbols with her fingers. "These... they're Keeper markings. We're getting close."

Orion nodded, but the feeling of being watched didn't ease. If anything, it intensified. "Stay sharp. We don't know what other defenses are in place."

As they navigated the canyon, the narrow path widened into a massive cavern. In the center of the cavern stood a large, circular door embedded in the stone wall, glowing with a soft, pulsating light. Intricate patterns and symbols covered its surface, and the energy radiating from it was overwhelming.

Riko stepped forward, examining the door closely. "It's locked by some sort of ancient biometric scanner. If we can bypass it, we should be able to get inside."

Dray stepped up, eyeing the door warily. "But if this is a Keeper facility, wouldn't it require their DNA or some kind of authorization?"

Mara scanned her readings, then looked at Orion. "It might. But the relic we brought with us could act as a key—it contains Keeper energy."

Orion nodded and, without hesitation, pulled the relic from his pack. Holding it up to the scanner, he hoped the ancient device would recognize the energy within. The door shuddered, then slowly rumbled open, revealing a dark passageway that descended into the depths.

"Looks like we're in," Orion said, his voice low but resolute as he stepped forward.

The crew followed, entering a narrow corridor lit only by strange, luminescent crystals that cast an eerie, pale blue light. The air was thick with dust, and a faint, acrid smell lingered—an unsettling hint of a long-dormant power awakening.

As they moved deeper, soft whispers began to fill the air, faint at first, but steadily growing louder. It was as if the walls themselves were speaking—voices, distorted and ancient, that seemed to hum from every direction.

Dray shivered and glanced around nervously. "Does anyone else hear that?"

Riko nodded, her expression tense. "It's like... whispers. But they don't sound human."

Orion raised a hand, signaling for silence. The whispers faded, and an oppressive silence descended as they entered a massive chamber. At its center stood a towering monolith, carved from a dark, metallic stone that seemed to pulse with its own energy.

Mara moved closer, awe in her voice. "This... this is the Keeper's core memory. It's a repository of all their knowledge."

Before any of them could react, a brilliant light erupted from the monolith, engulfing them all. In an instant, memories flooded their minds—visions of battles fought across galaxies, the rise and fall of ancient civilizations, and the Keepers' desperate, tragic struggle against the Devourers.

Orion's heart pounded as the devastation played out before him—the unthinkable horrors the Devourers had unleashed upon countless worlds. The Keepers had fought to stop them, but even their greatest sacrifices hadn't been enough.

Just as quickly as the vision had come, it ended, leaving the crew reeling, struggling to process the weight of what they had seen.

Mara's face was pale. "The Keepers... they tried to stop the Devourers, but it backfired. These defenses weren't just to guard their knowledge. They were meant to contain something—something worse."

Orion's gaze hardened as he stared at the monolith. "Then we need to be ready. Whatever the Keepers left behind, we'll use it."

But as he turned to face the others, the ground trembled beneath their feet. A deep rumble echoed through the chamber, and the monolith's glow intensified, casting long shadows that twisted and shifted.

Riko's eyes widened in horror. "Orion... I think we've awakened something."

The shadows coalesced, taking form as monstrous guardians—massive, writhing entities made of pure darkness, their eyes glowing with malice.

Orion's heart raced. "Fall back! We're not ready for this fight."

They turned and ran, the monstrous guardians closing in with terrifying speed. Fear gnawed at their resolve, but there was no turning back now. As they fled into the darkness, one chilling thought echoed in each of their minds:

They were never supposed to escape.
