Chereads / Escaping my mate / Chapter 3 - The beast

Chapter 3 - The beast

A sharp smell burned my nostrils, I sat up right pulling in lung fulls of air, the acrid smell felt like acid, smelling salts.

"Thank goddess your awake, how do you feel?" Mr.Dagner fussed, everyone that was left was standing in a group around me,

"Do you remember what happened" Hans asked holding out a cup of water to me, which I took and drank greedily.

"I felt dizzy then" I stopped for a second "Well then I woke up here" I replied.

Then of course at that exact moment my stomach grumbled loudly, I wanted to jump into a river and just float away.

"See if we hadn't skipped breakfast you wouldn't have looked like a lame ass in front of Hans Mchottie" Nissa pouted.

"Oh shush we're fine now aren't we?" I growled.

"No we aren't, I'm still hungry" Nissa continued pouting.

Somebody tapped me on the shoulder, I turned realizing I was zoning out, so now everyone was giving me weird looks including Hans and Mr.Dagner.

Hans looked to Mr.Dagner and he nodded back, speaking without words they were most definitely good friends.

Mr.Dagern got to his feet.

"Alright everyone time to go, nothing to see here, I will see you all tomorrow bright and early" he announced, shooing people out the door, he followed them out, I was left inside alone with Hans, not that I was complaining, but I'm extremely shy, so when I looked up and he was smiling at me I looked away blush filling my face.

"Where's the cafeteria here? I'm starving" he asked shoving his hands in his pockets.

"Across the quad the entrance is by the kiss and ride" I replied as Hans pulled one hand from his pocket and offering it to me to help me stand.

Once I was back on my feet I felt like I was spinning, so he kept me up right.

"Well If your not to busy Ms.clint, maybe you could show me the way?" he asked, a smile playing on his lips.

"Uh sure I guess I can do that" I stammered

"Great let's go then" Hans replied.

I led him in the direction of the exit.

"So where are you from Miss Clint?" he enquired.

"Uhm... I'm from here born and raised, what about you?" answering his question with my own.

"Glenboroughs" he said " I heard you say earlier that you were a Beta, you wouldn't happen to be Amara and Ryan's daughter would you?" he asked turning to me.

"Yeah that's me" I confirmed

"You look so much like her" he said softly,

"Like who?" I asked confused

"Your mother" he said simply, he was quiet for a second "she was a dear friend of mine, left the Glenn when she met your father" he told me.

I stopped walking for a second "really?" I said looking at him.

"Yeah, she was a really smart woman, she always seemed so happy, she was such a beautiful lady." he continued.

"I'm sorry, about what happened, I know loosing her must have been hard" he said holding out his arm to help me down the front steps, I held on silently taking one step at a time, letting out a sigh once we reached the bottom.

"I don't remember a whole lot about her if I'm being honest, talking about her doesn't make me sad anymore, maybe you can tell me about her?" I asked, turning to look up at him.

"Of course" he said with a nod of his head, "come on lets go get something to eat"

We headed towards the cafeteria, walking through the large field full of students enjoying the balmy summers day.

We walked in silence for a bit till Hans spoke.

"So whats your major?" he asked breaking the silence.

"I'm in psychology and law" I said with a shrug of my shoulders.

"Ahhh you're quite intelligent aren't you?" he asked, his eyes flicking up to mine and I couldn't help but blush.

"I wouldn't say I'm that smart, Alpha is making me so when I take over this fall I'll be prepared" I groaned, staring up into the cloudless blue sky.

"I thought you wanted to be an artist?" hans questioned.

"I do, that's all I want, but according to my dad pack comes before everything else" I said, I could feel Hans stare at me, but I chose not to turn to look at him and continued walking.

"You know Essie, sometimes you need to break pack tradition and just do you" Hans said as he caught up with me again.

I smiled at him, "maybe I just needed more encouragement than just some lectures" I laughed.

He stared at me for a second then chuckled, "so Essie if you don't mind me asking what do you plan on doing once you take over this fall?"

"Oh I'm not" I said bluntly.

Hans grabbed my arm stopping me in my tracks.

"What do you mean?"

"I'm not planning on staying after graduation, I want to get out, probably settle down in a human city and work my way through art school" I said nonchalantly.

He released my arm and stepped closer, I did the same, "it's best we stop this conversation now, there are ears everywhere" he whispered, I nodded in agreement.

We pick a table near the big wall of windows, after grabbing a tray and picked out our food.

I decided on a salad and a chicken sandwich, Hans got a cheese steak sub and fries.

sitting down I brought my fork to my mouth and took a bite, Nissa pressing herself forward moaned at the taste, and to my absolute horror the sound came out from my lips.

I dropped my fork staring wide eyed across the table at Hans, who was giving me a mischievous grin.

"What's your name?" he asked cocking his head to the side.

I was about to answer him, saying you know my name, when I felt Nissa push forward again, "Nissa" she said said through my body, her voice slightly deeper then my own.

"What a beautiful name, well it's very nice to meet you Nissa, my wolfs name is Soren" he introduced his wolf to us, his eye shifting black for just a moment.

"Uh nice to meet you too" I said awkwardly.

He smiled at me giving me a wink.

"Should we continue our meal?" he said lifting his sub to his lips.

"Uh yeah".

we carried on eating, I was feeling really awkward.

"You should come with your father next week to the summit meeting, I think you would like it in the Glenn" Hans said wiping his mouth with a napkin.

"Huh? what do you know about the summit meeting?" I enquired, my eyebrows raised, only the pack leader should know about the meeting.

"Well me and Alpha Monroe have been preparing for it for months now" he replied, I took a large drink from my water bottle and was now choking on it, Alpha Monroe? why would he be working with him??

"So you and the Alpha King are close?" I asked swallowing the last of my water to clear my throat.

"Well I am his Beta so I would hope so" he smirked.

"Oh my goddess your the ruthless killing machine? your the beast?" I whispered the last part, which made him laugh.

"Oh goodness I haven't been called the beast in years, but yes that's me" he chuckled.

We went silent for a little while, until i spoke again.

"How old are you??" I couldn't help myself, the beat had to at least be in his late forties , but the man sitting in front of me didn't look much older then me.

"I'm 48" he replied, sadness creeping into his expression.

"If I can leave you with one word of advice kid, don't fuck with witches, immortality is horrible" he said softly.

I nodded at him in response, not knowing how to respond, I knew how awful it was, I've Heard the stories.

He leaned forward a bit resting his arms on the table, "Now let's talk business, what can I offer you that would bring you to visit me in the Glen?" he asked looking straight into my eyes.

"I get so busy I would love an art buddy" he begged.

I found his pleading adorable, but I knew I couldn't go, I wouldn't go, I truly hated the pack ways so there was no way in hell I was going to a pack summit meeting with so many other packs, I would rather jump off a cliff.

"I can't unfortunately I have mids that week" I made up an excellent excuse, hopefully he would fall for it.

"Why are you lying to him I wanna go" Nissa cried in my mind.

"No we can't, I won't be part of that shit, I don't care how cute he is" I argued back, I felt Nissa curl into ball and let out a huff, admitting defeat easily.

"Well that's unfortunate but it's whatever I guess it can't be helped"

he shrugged.

"I'd better get going" he said " I've got a long car ride home, it was nice meeting you Essie, I hope we get to meet again soon"

"likewise, I would love to hear about my mom as a teen" I giggled, standing to dump my tray into the trash.

"Can I give you a hug" hans asked nervously.

I nodded and he walked around the table wrapping me in his arms, man he was so tall.

I leaned into the hug wrapping my arm around him too.

"Not sound creepy but I love your scent, it's like oranges and cinnamon rolls" he said, making me laugh, remembering I had thought the same thing.

"I like your scent too, vanilla and licorice" he chuckled.

We both pulled away smiling at each other, before I walked away heading towards the doors, he watched me walk out and sighed.

I didn't have another class till 12:30 and it was only ten now, what was I gonna do with myself for the next hour or so.

As I sat down on a bench near by I didn't get to think long spotting Melody coming towards me, she looks pretty upset, so I guess I was gonna be the therapist for the next hour, she only had that look in her eyes when her boyfriend jasper pissed her off, oh joy.

"Essie I'm gonna kill him" she shouted getting closer to me, I had hit the nail on the head.

"What did he do now?" i had to hold in my laugh.

She stopped in front of me turning her phone towards me so I could read the text message on her screen.

It said "can't come over today hanging out with my little cousin" followed by a picture of a very nice looking she-wolf.

"He doesn't have a cousin" she stated, this boy was screwed I thought to myself.

Then right as I was about to add my input she pulled me into a bear hug, as she stood there hugging me her back straightened and she went still.

"Essie who were you just with" she asked, I pulled back took look at her face and tears were falling down her cheeks.

"Umm Melly are you okay?" I asked, wiping her tears with my shirt sleeve.

"Who?" she asked again.

"His name is Hans Hartman, he was my guest lecturer today, w-we ended up having lunch together" I stumbled over my words.

"His scent, my Darlene thinks he's our mate" she managed to choke out.

"Oh my goddess we have to find him before he leaves" I shouted in excitement.

"Okay--let's do it" Melody sounded unsure, but I knew she would've regret not searching.
