Chapter 15 - Showdown begins

The alley leading to the underground den was dark and gritty, echoing the low hum of excitement from students who had arrived early to witness the showdown. The building was notorious—a hidden, forgotten storage space transformed years ago by a gang into an arena for those needing to settle scores. Now, it was the unofficial battleground for their school. Graffiti covered every inch of the walls, marking past challenges and the names of previous victors.

Kane, Leo, and Liam arrived at the entrance, all feeling the weight of the impending fight. Leo peered around, visibly anxious. "So, uh… this isn't as bad as it seems, right? It's just… an 'underground den.' We'll be out in no time, and maybe I'll even figure out my electro-speed."

Liam sighed. "It's electrokinetic reflexes, Leo. You've only been calling it that for two days now." He looked at Kane. "This was a terrible idea, you know that, right?"

Kane gave him a weary smile. "It wasn't exactly part of my five-year plan, no. But we don't have much choice now."

As they moved through the crowd, the murmur of voices intensified, people pointing and whispering as they recognized the trio. The news of Kane's challenge had spread like wildfire, and now nearly half the school had gathered to witness what most were sure would be a quick, humiliating defeat.

"Hey, it's the Pup Club!" someone jeered, sending a wave of laughter through the den.

Kane clenched his fists but kept his head high, ignoring the taunts. He'd come too far to back out now. They stepped into the ring—a rough circle marked on the concrete floor, surrounded by students who had climbed onto crates and barrels to get a better view.

And there, in the center of it all, stood Andy with his friends, smug and relaxed, looking every bit the king of the underground. When he spotted Kane, his smirk widened.

"Look who decided to show up," he called out, loud enough for everyone to hear. His friends laughed, echoing his contempt.

Kane felt a surge of anxiety, but he forced himself to step forward, meeting Andy's gaze with as much defiance as he could muster. Leo and Liam exchanged a worried glance, but they stayed close, determined not to abandon their friend.

Andy sauntered over, making a show of cracking his knuckles. "Alright, Kane, I've been waiting all day to see what you're made of. I mean, it takes guts to challenge me, doesn't it?"

Kane squared his shoulders, trying to hide the tremor in his hands. "Let's get this over with," he said, his voice steadier than he felt.

Andy laughed, his voice dripping with mockery. "Oh, don't worry, I'll make it quick. But since you're here, might as well show you what real power looks like."

With a flourish, he raised his arm, a faint shimmer of energy coiling around his fingers. The crowd fell silent, all eyes fixed on the glow radiating from Andy's hand. He let the energy build for a moment, basking in the awe and fear of the onlookers before he flicked his wrist, sending a bolt of energy arcing toward Kane.

Kane barely dodged in time, the energy sizzling past his arm and leaving a faint scorch mark on his sleeve. The crowd erupted in cheers, and Andy chuckled, as if thoroughly entertained by Kane's attempt to avoid the inevitable.

Leo's face drained of color as he whispered to Liam, "Maybe we should just pull him out now. I mean, who cares if they laugh? At least he'd be alive."

Liam shook his head, his jaw clenched. "We're in too deep, Leo. He's got to see this through."

Andy, grinning with the confidence of someone who knew he'd already won, circled Kane, cracking his knuckles. "Oh, come on, Kane. Is that all you've got? I thought you'd at least give me a workout."

Kane's frustration was mounting with each taunt. He couldn't just keep dodging, but he had no idea how to respond. The system's cryptic words echoed in his mind: Lay siege to your power. But what did that even mean? Right now, he'd settle for anything that would keep him from looking like a fool.

As Andy lunged with another energy-laced punch, Kane ducked and rolled to the side, narrowly avoiding the blow. Andy's laughter rang out. "You know, it's almost like you're not even trying. Maybe you should just take the hit and save us all some time."

Kane felt a spark of anger rise in his chest. Lay siege. It wasn't about diving in recklessly. It was about finding a way to chip away at his own barriers, bit by bit, and forcing his power to reveal itself.

Andy raised his hand again, and a new bolt of energy flared to life, brighter and more intense than before. "Here's a little something extra, just for you, Kane!" With a grin, he hurled the energy directly at Kane's chest.

Kane took a deep breath, centering himself. This time, he didn't dodge; instead, he focused, feeling a faint warmth build in his core, like a small flame struggling to ignite. The energy bolt flew toward him, and at the last second, he shifted to the side, letting it graze his arm. The impact was sharp, a quick burst of pain that made him grit his teeth, but he didn't falter.

The crowd gasped, and Andy's smile faltered for a moment. "Oh? Decided to stand your ground, huh?"

Kane glared at him, his confidence slowly returning. He could feel something awakening, a quiet force within him. His senses sharpened, the dim light around him becoming clearer, the sounds of the crowd fading into the background.

Lay siege.

He didn't need to understand everything right now; he just needed to claim what was his, one piece at a time.

Andy's smirk returned, though it was tinged with uncertainty. He launched another attack, the energy crackling as it arced through the air. Kane sidestepped, moving with a fluidity he hadn't known he possessed, each movement precise and calculated.

Leo watched in awe, nudging Liam. "Are you seeing this? It's like Kane's finally… I don't know, doing something."

Liam nodded, his face breaking into a grin. "I think he's starting to understand."

Andy, frustrated by Kane's sudden resilience, threw another punch, his fist glowing with energy. Kane ducked and countered, his hand moving instinctively, catching Andy's wrist and redirecting his momentum. The crowd gasped as Andy stumbled, his confident facade cracking.

Kane could feel the power within him, like a fire waiting to be unleashed. He didn't have full control yet, but he could sense it, the potential lying just beneath the surface.

Lay siege, he thought, a determined glint in his eyes. He wasn't just going to stand here and be Andy's punching bag.

Andy's face twisted with anger as he straightened, his pride wounded. "Alright, you little punk," he spat, his tone venomous. "You want to play tough? Let's see how tough you really are." He raised both hands, summoning every ounce of energy he could muster, the air around him crackling with power.

Kane took a step back, bracing himself. This was it—the moment that would decide whether he'd crumble or stand tall. He focused on the warmth within him, letting it grow, letting it surround him like a shield.

The crowd held their breath, the anticipation thick in the air. Andy's eyes blazed with fury as he unleashed his attack, the energy surging toward Kane with deadly speed.

But Kane didn't flinch. Instead, he closed his eyes, feeling the power within him stir to life.
