Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: Ting Runan's Shock

Wang Shuo left, taking his Sun Wukong mask and the approved leave form with him.

Ting Runan was completely unaware.

She was just absently staring at the A4 paper in her hand.

It was an ordinary A4 paper, but what was drawn on it deeply engrossed Ting Runan, so much so that she didn't even notice when her thesis slipped off the desk and fell to the ground.

"Wang Shuo, you..."

Ting Runan looked up and only then realized that Wang Shuo was gone, leaving her alone in the spacious office, lost in thought.

She came to her senses and pondered quietly, at times showing disbelief, at times frowning, and at times breaking into a genuine smile.

After a long while, she took out her phone, checked the time, and then dialed a number.

"Hello? Teacher, yes, it's Runan. Am I disturbing you?"

"Ah, teacher, you're being too polite. I just have something I want to report to you and ask about."

"Teacher, have you heard of... node-based self-recurrent neural networks?"

...

Wang Shuo walked down the campus road, feeling quite content.

Although the process was complicated, the outcome was satisfying enough, at least he managed to get his leave approved, didn't he? Moreover, he had preliminarily verified some things, which excited him greatly.

He was determined to win the bet with Chen Xin.

Thinking about having to submit a complete source code to his counselor within three days, Wang Shuo's excited expression turned sour.

It seemed that perhaps what Li Zongqiang said had some truth to it; he really had been having bad luck lately.

Who would have thought that just asking for a leave could push him to use his trump card? This counselor, Ting Runan, really held a grudge.

Better to avoid her in the future; she's not someone to mess with.

Wang Shuo thought to himself, he had too many things on his plate right now to deal with something like a "node-based self-recurrent neural network."

Yes, the name was just made up by Wang Shuo to deceive his teacher, who was crazy about research.

As for what was written on the A4 paper, it was nothing much, just a framework called "Intelligent Core" that Wang Shuo had randomly selected from a pile of basic software architectures of the humanoid civilization. Seeing that it had something to do with intelligence, he had just taken it out and used it.

His teacher's reaction greatly reassured him. Things from the humanoid universe could be used on Earth too! With his thorough understanding of the Intelligent Core framework, Wang Shuo could create something tangible at any time.

So, this... wasn't really deception, was it?

After all, you didn't give me leave.

Humming a tune, Wang Shuo returned to the dormitory and saw his three brothers sneakily lying on their respective beds, secretly watching him with their eyes, occasionally gesturing to each other with their eyes, and he had no idea what it meant.

Wang Shuo pretended not to notice and busied himself with organizing his things.

"Cough... cough cough, Eldest Brother, it's okay if you failed. You don't need to isolate yourself. You don't know how difficult it was for me to ask the counselor for two days off to go to the hospital to take care of you."

Zheng Jun sighed.

"Thankfully, my devotion to you moved the old coach, otherwise, not only would I not have been able to accompany you, but you might not have seen me when you woke up."

"Yeah, yeah." Chen Cheng nodded, "If you can't get the leave, it's fine. We can just skip class directly. No big deal."

Li Li also said, "Getting along with the counselor is an important step in entering society."

Only then did Wang Shuo show off his leave form with some pride, flicked it, and sighed, "Getting leave is as difficult as climbing to the sky for you, but for me, it's not even worth a glance. It's really... lonely."

"Are you kidding?" Zheng Jun shouted with his loud voice, "With the temper of the old witch, and you missing so many classes, she would give you leave?"

Chen Cheng also looked disbelief, sneering, "If the old witch really gave you leave, not to mention fifteen days, even if it's three days, as long as you can get it, I'll wash your socks for a week!"

"And if it's more than that?" Li Li asked timely.

"Then for every extra day, I'll wash your socks for an extra week, and your underwear too!" Chen Cheng said with his eyes closed, without even thinking.

"Good, I, Zheng Jun, admire you, Fourth Brother, for being a real man." The resolute words made Zheng Jun couldn't help but look sideways and thumbs up. Then he snatched Wang Shuo's leave form.

"Let me see, the old witch wouldn't sign for you... You really got it?" Zheng Jun widened his eyes, looking at the consent signature, trying to figure out if Wang Shuo had forged it himself. After a moment, he had to admit that it seemed to really be the signature of the old witch he had mentioned, complete with the stamp from the Academic Affairs Office.

Zheng Jun jumped off the bed, handed the leave form to the stunned Chen Cheng, sympathetically patted him on the shoulder: "Fourth Brother, a real man keeps his word, what he says counts! Our socks, oh, and underwear, are all on you this semester, this is my last support for you, Eldest Brother!"

After saying that, he clicked his tongue and jumped back onto his own bed.

Chen Cheng held the leave form, staring at Ding Runan's handwriting on it, his eyes almost popping out.

Li Li also looked sympathetic and shrank back onto his bed.

Looking at the dramatic expressions of his three brothers, Wang Shuo couldn't help it anymore, snatched the leave form back from Chen Cheng's hand, and laughed: "Alright, you guys. By the way, Eldest Brother. I won't be coming back to stay for a few days."

"Not coming back to stay, where will you stay?"

Zheng Jun looked puzzled.

"I have a place."

Wang Shuo waved his hand and was about to leave the dormitory when he suddenly seemed to remember something and stopped.

"Fourth Brother. How's your company been recently?"

The frustrated Chen Cheng, who was lying on the bed with his eyes closed, opened his eyes and looked at Wang Shuo with some confusion.

Wang Shuo coughed awkwardly and said: "You're a rich second generation after all, you should at least care about the company's recent situation."

"The company's affairs have my uncle and my dad to worry about, what do I have to worry about?" Chen Cheng muttered: "Besides, even if I want to worry, there's nowhere to worry about. My dad wouldn't tell me about the company's affairs. Where did you get the news? What did Chen Xin tell you?"

"Nothing..." Wang Shuo shook his head quickly, serious: "I swear I am mortal enemies with Chen Xin! But I advise you to find out when you have time, I'm also very curious. Remember to tell me what you find out!"

Chen Cheng lay back down and responded in a low voice.

"Guys, I'm leaving first! Let's see each other... in fifteen days!"

Wang Shuo shouted, holding back his tears.

A weak response came from the dormitory, resembling a litter of newborn puppies, lacking in vitality.

Wang Shuo grinned, picked up his packed belongings, and hurried downstairs out of the dormitory. He then ran wildly and saw a familiar black car with a familiar license plate parked on the roadside.

He rushed up, opened the door, and got in.

"Student, you're a bit late. I've waited for you for two extra minutes."

"Sorry, sir." Wang Shuo apologized promptly, "Let's go to Optics Valley Software Park."

...

Ting Runan arrived at the Graduate School of Huazhong University of Science and Technology at four in the afternoon.

More than an hour had passed since her phone call.

Honestly, Ting Runan was eager to fly to her mentor for a discussion, but looking at the thesis on her desk, she blushed and had to patiently revise it before rushing over with the paper.

It seemed like her mentor had been waiting for some time.

"Sorry, teacher, I'm late."

She dared not delay and hurried forward.

The mentor, lost in thought, looked up and revealed a somewhat weathered face, with thin glasses perched on his nose. Ting Runan was worried they might fall to the ground at any moment.

Fortunately, her concerns didn't materialize as the mentor casually took off his glasses and placed them on the table beside him.

"Runan, you're just in time." The mentor pinched the bridge of his nose, "I was thinking about this 'node-based self-recurrent neural network' you mentioned earlier?"

"It's a node-based self-recurrent neural network, teacher." Ting Runan corrected, "And it has a ready-made architecture, which I found quite complex."

"Your research field includes neural networks and their applications, so I wanted to ask if this is something proposed by a foreign scholar that I'm not aware of?"

She then carefully unfolded the A4 paper and handed it to her mentor.

"Your research field includes neural networks and their applications, so I wanted to ask if this is something proposed by a foreign scholar that I'm not aware of?"

She then carefully unfolded the A4 paper and handed it to her mentor.

"Indeed... it's a wildly imaginative idea."

"But there are also many problems. The first issue is the question of feasibility. If the person who designed this system cannot perfect a reasonable logic algorithm, then the system is fundamentally unworkable."

"The second issue is the size. All algorithms need to run through databases, and all inputs and outputs of the algorithms are done through data. Different algorithms require different input data, which in turn requires different databases for storage. This inevitably leads to the enormity of the databases... wait, I seem to have overlooked something..."

As the mentor fell into deep thought, Ting Runan's mind was already somewhat overwhelmed. If her initial reaction to the paper was amazement, profundity, and confusion, then now it was shock.

Yes, shock.

Especially when she heard the words "primitive computer brain" from her mentor's mouth, she was so shocked she couldn't control herself.

What did "primitive computer brain" mean? Maybe it would be clearer with a different term: primitive intelligence!

The research direction of her and her mentor's entire life had been so easily solved by a single piece of paper, by something called a "node-based self-recurrent neural network"?

Perhaps there were still various difficulties, but at least there was a clear direction now, wasn't there?

As for whether this most basic computer logic algorithm could be realized... Ting Runan was certain. She could still remember the hateful, serious, and confident look in that brat's eyes, and of course, the words that made her grind her teeth in anger.

"In your paper, you mentioned algorithms like decision trees, support vector machines, Naive Bayes classification, recurrent neural networks, and so on. So why not add a neural logic module to the computer?"

"I designed a logic algorithm called the node-based self-recurrent neural network."

"If you agree to give me leave, I'll write the algorithm for you to see, and I'll provide the source code unconditionally."

Ting Runan gritted her teeth and finally couldn't help but blurt out.

"Wang Shuo, you brat, I remember you!"
