The Awakening
The sound of distant explosions echoed through the air as Alex and Mira sprinted across the rooftop, jumping from one building to the next. The city below was in ruins, swallowed by chaos. Creatures and dungeon portals had turned the streets into battlegrounds, and survival felt like a a gamble with impossible odds. The street was in a frenzy mode as the people ran helter skelter.
"Keep moving!" Mira shouted, her eyes darting around, scanning for any possible threats. She moved like someone who'd done this a thousand times before, with the grace of a warrior and the precision of a hunter. She was super fast and it looks like she knows what she was doing each time she moved
"Who are you, really?" Alex panted, struggling to keep up with her pace. "And how do you know so much about what's happening?"
Mira glanced back at him, her face unreadable. "I'm part of a group called the Sentinels. We've been preparing for this day—the day the world would wake up to its true nature."
"True nature?" Alex repeated, confusion flashing in his eyes. "What are you talking about?"
Mira's gaze softened slightly, as if deciding how much to reveal to him. "The dungeons, the monsters, the chaos—it's not random. It's been building for centuries, hidden beneath the surface of our reality. We just didn't see it because we were asleep, trapped in the illusion of a peaceful world."
"And you knew?" Alex asked, anger and disbelief mixing in his voice. "You knew this was coming, and no one did anything to stop it?"
"Trust me, we tried," Mira said bitterly. "But the forces we're up against—they're older and more powerful than you can imagine. All we could do was prepare for the inevitable and hope we could contain it when it finally broke loose."
Before Alex could process her words, a deep roar filled the air, louder and more menacing than any they'd heard so far. They turned to see a massive dungeon portal rip open in the sky, twice the size of any they'd seen before. From within emerged a colossal beast, its body wreathed in shadow, its eyes burning like molten lava. " What the fuck is that?" Alex shouted, " Oh shit!"
"Oh no," Mira whispered, her face paling. "That's a Titan-class. We're not ready for that."
"Then what do we do?" Alex asked, panic creeping into his voice.
Mira's grip tightened on her staff, her expression hardening. "We fight. We don't have a choice."
She launched herself at the creature, her staff glowing brighter than ever, releasing a surge of energy that crackled through the air like lightning. The beast roared in pain, swiping at her with a claw the size of a car, but Mira was too fast, dodging and countering with another blast.
Alex stood frozen, watching the battle unfold. His heart pounded in his chest, and he felt that same strange pull he'd felt earlier—the sensation that the energy coursing through the world was somehow linked to him. The green pulse he'd seen on the map resonated in his mind, stronger now, like a drumbeat he couldn't ignore.
Without thinking, he raised his hand toward the creature, and to his shock, a ripple of energy surged from his palm, striking the Titan in its chest. The impact didn't do much damage, but it was enough to draw the beast's attention away from Mira.
The creature turned its fiery gaze on Alex, growling in fury. For a second, he thought he'd made a fatal mistake. But then, something incredible happened—the energy in his hand intensified, growing brighter, wilder, until it erupted in a beam of light that slammed into the Titan, sending it staggering back.
"What the—" Mira stared at Alex, eyes wide with shock. "How did you do that?"
"I—I don't know!" Alex stammered, his hand still tingling with residual energy. "It just...happened!"
The Titan roared again, clearly enraged, but before it could recover, Mira seized the opportunity. She leapt forward, delivering a final, devastating blow that cracked its skull, shattering it into fragments of shadow and light. The creature disintegrated into nothing, its remains sucked back into the dungeon portal, which closed with a hiss.
Breathing heavily, Mira turned to Alex, her eyes blazing with a mix of awe and suspicion. "You shouldn't be able to do that. Not yet, anyway."
"What does that mean?" Alex asked, his voice shaky. "What am I?"
Mira studied him, her face unreadable. "You're an Awakener, Alex. One of the rare few with the ability to harness the energy from the dungeons. But the way you did it...it's like you've already tapped into a power that takes years to master."
Alex shook his head, trying to make sense of it all. "So, what? I'm some kind of freak now?"
"No," Mira said, a hint of a smile touching her lips. "You're something far more dangerous. And that's exactly what we need right now."
Just then, a beep sounded from Mira's wrist device. She glanced at the screen, and her expression darkened. "We've got to move. The dungeon pulse is spreading faster than we thought, and it's drawing something big. Something worse than the Titan-class."
"How much worse?" Alex asked, dread settling in his stomach.
Mira looked at him, her eyes hard as steel. "Let's just say, if we don't shut down the main dungeon soon, this city will be ground zero for the apocalypse."
Alex couldn't believe what was happening, one minute he was suppose to be at work and the next he was trying to save the earth as a hero. At least that was what Mira told him that he was.
They started running again, but this time, Alex felt different. The fear was still there, but it was mingled with something else—determination. He wasn't just running to survive anymore; he was running toward something. Toward answers. Toward the truth of who he really was.
And as they dashed across the rooftops, with the city in flames below them and the apocalypse unfolding all around, Alex couldn't shake the feeling that his awakening was only the beginning. That this power inside him wasn't just a gift—it was a weapon. One that could either save humanity or doom it forever.
But he wouldn't find out sitting on the sidelines. He was in this now, for better or worse. And he was ready to fight.
