Chapter 8 - Chapter 8

Fractured Bonds

Mira's hand trembled as she pressed hard against Alex's chest, her gaze fixed on his. She could feel his heart beating slowly beneath her palm. Alex's eyes flickered between his natural color and the cold silver hue of the shadow's influence. For a brief moment, she thought she saw a glint of recognition, a spark of the friend she once knew.

"Alex, I know you're still in there," Mira whispered, her voice barely audible over the chaos. "Fight it. Don't let this thing take you away from us."

Alex's body convulsed, his face showed he was in agony as he fought to reclaim control. The darkness within him fighting hard, resisting her touch, pushing back against her words. He opened his mouth to speak, but when he did, the voice that came out wasn't his own.

"Your words mean nothing to him now," the shadow hissed, twisting Alex's lips into a cruel smile. "You think you can save him with your pathetic little pep talks? He's already lost."

"Shut up!" Mira shouted with a tone of desperation in her voice. She dug her fingers into his chest, as if trying to reach into his soul. "I'm not talking to you. I'm talking to Alex—the real Alex."

For a split second, the cruel smile vanished, replaced by a look of pain and fear. "Mira…," Alex's own voice broke through, shaky and filled with torment. "I… I don't want to lose myself. Help me—"

But then the shadow surged back, stronger than before, and Alex's body jerked violently, throwing Mira backward. She landed hard on the ground, the impact knocking the breath out of her lungs. As she struggled to get up, she saw Alex rising to his feet, the darkness swirling around him like a living entity.

"You should have stayed out of this, Mira," the shadow taunted, its eyes glinting with malice. "Now you'll have to watch as he becomes something far beyond your reach."

"No," Mira said, shaking her head fiercely. She got to her feet, defiant despite the tremor in her limbs. "I won't give up on him. I don't care how strong you think you are—I'm not leaving him to you."

The shadow's expression shifted, a flicker of annoyance crossing Alex's face. "You really are persistent," it muttered, its voice dripping with disdain. "Let's see how long that will last."

Before Mira could react, the ground beneath them trembled violently, and a fissure split open, releasing a wave of dark energy that surged towards her. Mira raised her arms to shield herself, but the force knocked her back again, slamming her into a nearby wall. Pain shot through her side, but she gritted her teeth and refused to stay down.

"You think you can save him?" the shadow continued, walking slowly towards her. "You're nothing but a distraction—a weakness he should have discarded long ago."

As Mira struggled to stand, she noticed something in Alex's eyes—a flicker of light, faint but undeniably present. It was as if, despite the shadow's grip, a part of him was still fighting, still resisting. Her heart clenched with both hope and fear.

"Alex!" she shouted again, louder this time, her voice cutting through the darkness. "I know you're in there. You're stronger than this. Don't let this thing win!"

Alex's body twitched, his hands clenching and unclenching at his sides. The silver glow in his eyes dimmed slightly, replaced by a flash of his natural color. He opened his mouth as if to speak, but only a strangled sound came out.

"Fight it, Alex!" Mira pleaded. "Think of everything you've fought for, everything you've survived. You're not alone—you have me. We'll get through this together!"

For a moment, it seemed like she was reaching him. Alex's expression softened, his gaze focusing on her as if he was seeing her for the first time since this nightmare began. He took a hesitant step toward her, his lips parting to speak her name.

"Mira…," he whispered, his voice barely more than a breath. "I—"

But then, as if some invisible force yanked him back, his body convulsed again, and the shadow surged forward, roaring with fury. The darkness exploded out of him like a tidal wave, and Mira barely had time to brace herself before it slammed into her, sending her crashing to the ground once more.

The shadow let out a twisted laugh, its voice echoing with malevolent glee. "You're too late!" it taunted. "He's mine now, and there's nothing you can do about it."

Mira lay on the ground, her vision swimming, her body aching from the impact. But even as despair threatened to consume her, she clenched her fists and pushed herself up, refusing to give in. She knew Alex was still in there—she had seen it in his eyes. And as long as there was a chance, even the slightest sliver of hope, she wouldn't stop fighting for him.

"Alex," she whispered through gritted teeth, her voice steady and determined. "I'm not done yet. I'll find a way to bring you back, even if I have to drag you out of the darkness myself."

Just as Mira's words hang in the air, a sudden ripple of energy pulses through the room. The darkness surrounding Alex trembles, and for a fleeting moment, the shadow's grip seems to weaken.

Alex's eyes snap open, and for the first time, there is a look of pure terror on his face—terror not of the shadow, but of something even worse. In a voice that is both his and not his, he says, "Mira, run. It's not me you should fear—it's what's coming next."
