Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Descent

The entrance to the cave system was hidden deep within the forest, where the trees grew so thickly together that sunlight struggled to reach the ground. Moss and vines clung to the rocks, and the air was damp and heavy with the scent of earth. It took hours for the team to reach the entrance, guided by Tommy's knowledge of the terrain and local trails that twisted and turned, leading them ever closer to the mountainside.

At last, they stood before a narrow crevice in the rock face, barely wide enough for a person to squeeze through. Cold air seeped from the opening, carrying with it a faint, metallic odor that set Emily's heart racing with anticipation.

"This is it," she said, staring into the dark.

Marcus frowned. "Doesn't look like much."

Emily shot him a look. "It's not the entrance that matters. It's what's inside."

Tommy remained silent, his face tight with unease. He had never been this close to the cave before—his grandmother's warnings echoing in his mind. But there was no turning back now.

With flashlights strapped to their helmets and their gear in hand, the team began their descent into the earth. The narrow passage twisted downward, forcing them to crawl at times, their knees scraping against the jagged rocks. The air grew colder as they descended, and the light from the surface quickly faded behind them.

After what felt like hours, the tunnel widened into a cavernous chamber, the walls lined with strange, undulating formations of stone. Emily's breath caught in her throat. She had expected a typical cave system, but this... this was something else entirely.

"Look at this," she whispered, shining her light on the walls.

Sarah approached, her eyes widening as she saw the intricate carvings etched into the stone—symbols and figures that didn't resemble anything from any known civilization. The patterns seemed to shift and writhe in the light, as though they were alive.

"Whoever made these..." Sarah murmured, trailing off as she ran her fingers over the carvings. "This is ancient. Far older than anything we've seen."

Emily's heart pounded with excitement. This was it—proof of an ancient civilization buried deep beneath the earth. She could already imagine the headlines, the accolades. But Marcus remained cautious, his gaze flickering over the strange symbols.

"I don't like this," he muttered. "This place feels... wrong."

Before anyone could respond, a low rumble echoed through the chamber, vibrating the ground beneath their feet. The team froze, their lights darting around the cavern.

"What was that?" Sarah asked, her voice trembling.

"Probably just a minor tremor," Emily said, though her voice lacked conviction. "Let's keep moving. There's more to explore."

But as they ventured deeper into the cave, the sense of wrongness grew stronger. The carvings became more elaborate, depicting strange, twisted figures performing what appeared to be rituals to something massive, something that defied comprehension.

And in the darkness, something watched.
