Chapter 6 - Monster? Where?

Seeing my surprised face her eyes teared up as she spoke quietly in a whisper, "I mean I am a monster..."

"Ugghhh..." Not sure what to even say to that I stood up and pulled her up from the shallow water that only reached her waist. Unable to think straight to comfort her or anything I asked her with the most straight face the first thing that popped into my mind, "Why would I call such a cute girl like you a monster?"

Suddenly realizing I just called a girl I had just met cute I felt my cheeks heat up as her eyes became dazed as she spoke, "Now I know I am dreaming... A handsome angel just called me cute."

Slightly stunned at being called handsome I could only say what came to mind once again, "If this is a dream I wouldn't want to wake up."

After half an hour staring at each other dazed, we both woke up at the same time as we tried to back away from each other only to find that in our dazed state, we had wrapped our wings around each other trapping each other.

"ah-"

"ah-"

"Ughhh... Are you doing alright?" Not knowing what to do I asked her as I tried to unwrap my wings from her.

"Um... Yeah..." She looked completely confused expression as she responded before slapping herself, "Ow! So I am not dreaming. Sorry for bothering you, angel."

"Angel? You called me that earlier, but I ain't one. I am just a regular guy."

Pointing behind me she asked, "And the wings?"

Looking behind me I saw my wings, "Oh, yeah... I don't know they just sort of appeared when I woke up today."

"Huh? Me too!"

Seeing the surprise I remembered what happened last night, "Did you also wish to fly on a shooting star!?"

"Eh- no? I..." Surprised she looked confused before looking down to the water before looking up with surprised eyes, "Yesterday, I wished to have freedom. To be able to be free like a bird that could go everywhere."

"Oh Yeah! Me to! Well, not those exact words, but to be free like a bird to go wherever unbound..." Thinking of it I wondered more if my wish had truly become reality. After all, I remember I passed out right after wishing to the shooting star. Then strangely I gained wings to fly supernaturally.

"Unbound and free..." Focusing back onto her she looked at me with eyes that showed she understood entirely. "Me too. I wished upon a shooting star I saw last night and then... I woke up like this."

Suddenly thinking more about this I had a thought, "Wait, if we wished and got it granted in an indirect way for you. Then... could there be others? I saw that shooting star and wished upon it too.

So, did everyone who saw that shooting star and made a wish get it granted? I don't think I am that special, so why did I get my wish granted? Is it, chance, coincidence, or... something else?"

"I... Don't know... I am the same... Sure I have overbearing parents, but that is normal for many people. I can't think of any truly special about me either."

"Huh? Overbearing parents? I... Also, have overbearing parents."

We both looked into each other's eyes as we thought we might have found a connection! It might not be perfect, but maybe that shooting star was special.

"Do you know anyone else who has those characteristics?"

"Besides my siblings... Oh! Let me call them." Taking out my phone out of my pocket I could only watch as water dripped out... Power button... "Fuck."

"Sorry." She looked down embarrassed.

"Why? I jumped in on my own. Besides it was something anyone would do."

"But..."

"Don't worry about it. If it works after drying out then great, if not, then it is what it is. It has happened and we have to move forward."

"Umm... Alright." Looking at her shy countenance I could only think one word. CUTE!

This time I quickly focused back onto the situation, "Why don't we fly out of here and find some people to connect to society? We might be able to find if any other person was affected."

Taking a step back I realized I was still dripping wet and waist deep in water. But first, why don't we get to shore. Then you can come over to my house, I might not have much, but I can get you some dry clothes."

Looking up at me with clear nervousness I heard her quiet, "Are you sure?"

"Of course. Why not?" Turning around I started walking but stopped when I heard a yelp.

Turning back again I saw she was shaking with fear in her eyes. "Um... Are you okay?"

"Y-yeah..." Looking up at me with watery eyes she looked like she was about to cry. Thinking about how she almost drowned I quickly walked by her side and awkwardly wrapped my arm around her as I started to lead her to shore.

Only after reaching solid ground did she seem to relax a bit. "Sorry about that, I-I don't know how to swim."

"Yeah I assumed so when you almost drowned in the lake, but it is fine you can either learn whenever you want, or just avoid it."

She looked up at me with tears in her eyes as she spoke softly, "T-thank y-you..."

Still standing next to her I awkwardly hugged her sideways. I don't know how I should comfort others, especially since we are basically strangers having only met less than an hour ago. "Don't worry about it."

"Y-yeah, let's just get going..."

Walking a bit longer I opened my dry wings getting ready to fly when suddenly the girl grabbed my arm, "Umm... I don't know how to fly."

"Oh, you don't have to worry if you aren't very good I'm not that great either, but even if we crash it doesn't hurt much besides being a bit embarrassing."

She looked side to side as if wondering where she could go before nodding lightly. "Alright."

Giving her my most genuine smile I encouraged her, "Why don't you get into the air first and after I will guide us to my house."

She nodded and seemed to get into an unsteady stance before jumping up into the air. I waited until I saw her fly a bit away before following her lead and jumping into the sky.

Flapping my wings I could sort of hover as I looked at her... Why is she just gliding? Quickly flying to her side I asked her, "Are you ready to follow me?"

"Uhhh-" She looked at me with teary eyes as she spoke, "I don't know how."

What?

Isn't it supposed to be instinctive? Not knowing what she meant I just asked her, "What do you mean? Like you can't figure out how to turn or you can't see me in the sky or... what?"

Still looking at me with those teary eyes she spoke, "This is all I can do."
