Chapter 34 - Chapter 34: In the Dark of the Night

The night air outside the White Lotus Clan fortress was crisp and cold as Lan Yue and Li Feng moved swiftly through the shadows, their footsteps barely audible on the damp ground. The fortress walls towered behind them, silent and imposing, but Lan Yue felt no sense of safety as they left their home behind. It wasn't home anymore. Not as long as the conspiracy that had taken root within the clan remained hidden in the shadows.

Lan Yue's mind raced, her heart still pounding from the encounter with Elder Han. His death had been necessary, but it left more questions than answers. They had stopped one traitor, but Han's final words echoed ominously in her mind—the Shadowborn were coming. And they were not ready.

"We need to move fast," Li Feng said, his voice low as they made their way through the dense forest outside the fortress. "If Han had allies, they'll know something's wrong soon. We won't have much time before they come after us."

Lan Yue nodded, her grip tightening on her sword as they navigated the dark path ahead. The forest was thick, the towering trees casting long shadows in the pale moonlight. Every rustle of leaves, every crack of a branch underfoot, made her pulse quicken. She couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched.

"We need more than just suspicions," Lan Yue muttered, her voice filled with frustration. "The council won't act unless we have solid proof. Han is dead, but his allies—whoever they are—will still be working in the shadows."

Li Feng's expression darkened as he glanced at her. "Then we'll have to find that proof. And we'll have to do it quietly."

The weight of their situation pressed down on Lan Yue's chest like a heavy burden. They were walking a dangerous path, one that could easily lead to their deaths if they made a single wrong move. The White Lotus Clan was teetering on the edge of disaster, and the enemies they faced were not just the Shadowborn, but the traitors lurking within their own ranks.

"We can't go back to the fortress," Lan Yue said quietly as they continued through the forest. "Not yet. We need to find a place to regroup, somewhere we can plan our next move."

Li Feng nodded, his eyes scanning the darkened trees around them. "There's a village not far from here. It's small, off the main road—no one from the clan will be looking for us there. We can rest and figure out our next step."

Lan Yue's heart quickened at the thought of taking a moment to breathe, to think. The events of the last few hours had left her mind spinning—Elder Han's betrayal, the fight in the archives, the realization that the Shadowborn were coming. She needed time to process it all, to gather her strength for what lay ahead.

"Lead the way," Lan Yue said, her voice steady despite the turmoil inside her.

They continued through the forest, their pace quick and deliberate, the cold night air biting at their skin. The village Li Feng had mentioned was tucked away in a secluded valley, far enough from the fortress that they wouldn't be found easily, but close enough that they could return if needed. It was a small place, mostly farmers and traders, and Lan Yue hoped they could find some respite there, at least for a little while.

As they approached the outskirts of the village, the sound of rushing water reached their ears, the faint glow of lanterns flickering in the distance. The village was nestled at the foot of the mountains, surrounded by thick forest and a winding river. It was quiet, peaceful, the kind of place where people went to escape the chaos of the world.

Lan Yue's muscles ached with exhaustion as they crossed the small bridge leading into the village, the wooden planks creaking under their weight. She hadn't realized just how tired she was until now—the fight with Han had drained her more than she cared to admit, both physically and mentally.

"We can stay at the inn," Li Feng said quietly as they entered the village square. "It's run by an old friend of mine. We'll be safe there."

Lan Yue nodded, grateful for the chance to rest, if only for a moment. The village was quiet, the streets empty save for the occasional flicker of light from a window. It was late, and most of the villagers were already asleep. It was exactly what they needed—a place to hide, to regroup, to plan.

As they approached the inn, a small, unassuming building with a thatched roof and a single lantern hanging by the door, Li Feng knocked softly. After a moment, the door creaked open, revealing a middle-aged man with graying hair and a warm, welcoming smile.

"Li Feng," the man said, his voice filled with quiet surprise. "It's been a long time."

Li Feng nodded, his expression serious. "We need a place to stay, Wei. Just for the night."

Wei's eyes flicked to Lan Yue, and though he didn't ask any questions, there was a knowing look in his gaze. "Of course. Come inside."

They stepped into the inn, the warmth of the fire immediately washing over them. The small common room was empty, save for a few chairs and a table, the flickering light of the hearth casting soft shadows across the walls. It was simple, but comfortable, and Lan Yue felt some of the tension in her shoulders ease as they settled inside.

"You can stay as long as you need," Wei said, his voice kind but filled with curiosity. "I don't need to know the details, but it seems like you've gotten yourselves into something serious."

Li Feng exchanged a glance with Lan Yue before nodding. "We're in a bit of trouble, but we'll only be here for the night. We'll be gone by morning."

Wei nodded, his expression thoughtful. "I'll leave you to rest, then. If you need anything, just call."

As Wei left the room, Lan Yue let out a quiet sigh, her body sinking into one of the chairs by the fire. The warmth was soothing, but her mind was still racing, filled with thoughts of Han's betrayal and the threat of the Shadowborn. Even with the brief respite, she couldn't let her guard down—not with so much at stake.

"We're running out of time," Lan Yue said quietly, her eyes focused on the flickering flames. "The Shadowborn are coming, and the clan is unprepared. If we don't find the others working with Han..."

Li Feng's expression was grim as he sat beside her, his dark eyes reflecting the firelight. "We will. We'll find them and expose them. But we have to be careful. The moment we make our move, we'll be targets."

Lan Yue nodded, her chest tightening with the weight of their task. They had uncovered one traitor, but how many more were waiting in the shadows? How deep did the conspiracy run?

"We should rest," Li Feng said quietly, his voice gentle despite the tension in the air. "We'll need our strength for what's coming."

Lan Yue didn't argue. She knew he was right. They were exhausted, both physically and mentally, and they couldn't afford to make mistakes. They had to be sharp, ready for whatever came next.

As she settled into the quiet of the inn, the crackling of the fire lulling her into a brief moment of peace, Lan Yue allowed herself to close her eyes. But even as sleep threatened to take her, the weight of the coming storm hung heavy in her mind.

The Shadowborn were coming.

And the darkness that had taken root within the White Lotus Clan was far from gone.
