Chapter 35 - Chapter 35: Kindling the Flame

The warm glow of the morning sun peeked through the thatched roof of the inn, casting long rays of light across the room. Lan Yue stirred awake slowly, her body still aching from the events of the night before. She had slept fitfully, her mind too focused on the looming dangers ahead. The betrayal of Elder Han, the conspiracy within the White Lotus Clan, and the encroaching threat of the Shadowborn were all heavy on her heart.

As she opened her eyes, she found Li Feng already awake, standing near the window with his back to her, his figure framed by the early morning light. He looked out over the village, the tension in his posture unmistakable. His spear leaned against the wall, never far from his reach.

"They'll come for us soon," Li Feng said, his voice low but steady. "Once they realize Han is dead, his allies will start moving."

Lan Yue sat up, brushing a stray lock of hair from her face. "We need to be ready for them. But we also need allies—people we can trust."

Li Feng turned to face her, his dark eyes thoughtful. "You're right. We can't fight this alone. But the question is, who can we trust?"

Lan Yue's mind raced through the names of people within the White Lotus Clan, warriors and allies they had fought beside. Some were honorable, loyal to the ideals of the clan, but others could have been swayed by Han's manipulations, or worse, by the promises of power from the Shadowborn.

"There are still good people in the clan," Lan Yue said, her voice firm. "We just need to find them before Han's allies do."

Li Feng nodded. "We need to move quickly. There's someone I know—someone who's always stood against the corruption in the council. Jin Zhao. He's a strategist, and he's kept his distance from the power plays within the clan. If anyone can help us, it's him."

Lan Yue felt a glimmer of hope at the mention of Jin Zhao's name. She had heard of him—an honorable man known for his wisdom and sharp mind. If they could bring him to their side, he could help them navigate the treacherous politics of the White Lotus Clan.

"Then we go to him," Lan Yue said, standing and gathering her things. "But we have to be careful. If Han's allies realize we're gathering support, they'll try to stop us before we can act."

Li Feng nodded, his expression grim. "They'll be watching. But we don't have a choice."

As they prepared to leave, Lan Yue's thoughts turned to the larger battle looming on the horizon. The Shadowborn were coming, and the White Lotus Clan was woefully unprepared. Even if they exposed Han's allies and regained control of the clan, they would still have to face the dark forces gathering in the distance.

"We need to prepare for the Shadowborn as well," Lan Yue said quietly as they stepped out of the inn and into the cool morning air. "Han's betrayal was just the beginning. The real war is still ahead of us."

Li Feng's eyes flickered with resolve as they began walking through the village, the quiet streets coming to life as the villagers went about their daily routines. "We'll have to rebuild the defenses of the clan, gather everyone we can, and prepare for the worst."

Lan Yue nodded, her heart heavy with the weight of what lay ahead. They had exposed one traitor, but the battle for the White Lotus Clan was far from over. And beyond the walls of the fortress, the true enemy—the Shadowborn—waited in the darkness, ready to strike.

As they made their way through the village, Lan Yue couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched. Every shadow, every rustle of leaves in the wind, seemed to carry a threat. She kept her hand close to her sword, ready for anything.

It didn't take long for them to reach the outskirts of the village, where a narrow path wound through the forest and led toward the home of Jin Zhao. The strategist lived far from the heart of the clan, preferring solitude over the political games played within the council. It was a long walk, but Lan Yue welcomed the quiet of the forest. It gave her time to think.

"We're going to need more than just Jin Zhao," Lan Yue said, breaking the silence as they walked. "If the Shadowborn are as powerful as Han suggested, we'll need warriors—strong ones. People who can stand against dark qi."

Li Feng's expression was thoughtful as he considered her words. "You're right. But most of the clan has never faced anything like the Shadowborn. They've heard stories, but they don't understand the true danger."

"We'll have to train them," Lan Yue said, her voice filled with determination. "We'll teach them how to fight, how to resist the dark qi. And we'll need to find others who can help us."

Li Feng nodded, his gaze focused on the path ahead. "I know a few people. Warriors who have fought alongside me in the past. They're loyal, and they've seen battle. If we can convince them to join us, they could make the difference."

Lan Yue's heart lifted slightly at his words. They were beginning to form a plan, a way to fight back against the forces threatening the clan. It wouldn't be easy, but they weren't alone. There were still people they could trust—people who would stand with them in the face of the coming darkness.

As they approached the edge of the forest, the sight of Jin Zhao's home came into view. It was a modest house, built of wood and stone, nestled in a clearing surrounded by tall trees. The sound of the wind rustling through the leaves was the only noise, a stark contrast to the chaos brewing within the White Lotus Clan.

Lan Yue's pulse quickened as they approached the door. Jin Zhao was their best chance at gathering support, but if he refused, if he had already been swayed by Han's allies, they would be in even greater danger.

Li Feng knocked on the door, his expression tense as they waited. After a moment, the door creaked open, revealing a man in his late forties with sharp, intelligent eyes and a calm demeanor. Jin Zhao looked them over for a brief moment before stepping aside, gesturing for them to enter.

"I've been expecting you," Jin Zhao said quietly as they stepped inside. "Word travels fast within the clan. I heard about what happened with Elder Han."

Lan Yue's heart skipped a beat. They had only just killed Han the night before—how could word have spread so quickly?

"Then you know we're in danger," Li Feng said, his voice steady but urgent. "Han's allies will come for us. And the Shadowborn are coming for the clan."

Jin Zhao's expression remained calm, but there was a flicker of concern in his eyes. "I know. That's why I've been preparing."

Lan Yue blinked in surprise. "Preparing? For what?"

Jin Zhao's gaze hardened as he met her eyes. "For the war that's coming. The White Lotus Clan is not ready to face the Shadowborn. But I am."
