Chapter 1 - Prologue

T's POV:

(Please note this is a rough idea of the story and just gives some context for the later chapters, Enjoy!)

Alright, here's the basics, Jefferson, Vincente, and I, have been friends since late middle school, with Vincente graduating a year before us. After we all made it out of school, we made the impulsive decision to become roommates. We then lived in a nice suburban neighborhood in the panhandle of Florida, specifically. We had a nice 3 bedroom house, and rent wasn't too bad split between the three of us. However, This decision would end up causing way more problems than we bargained for.

It all started when a strange illness seemed to strike the entire nation at once. The strangeness of it confused me, because for most people it only lasted a day or two at most, but it didn't stop there. The death rates weren't very high at all, with about 2 people dying so far, and doctors couldn't even explain what this illness was. While the vast majority of people got sick at the same time, not everyone did; and on top of that, it seemed to only happen in the US. Somehow, the three of us were among the lucky few not to catch the illness that was floating around, and we carried on with life as usual. One morning, I was doing my usual. I had just started eating my usual breakfast, a piece of toast with butter and a few eggs, and was sipping my coffee while watching the daily news. There were very bizarre reports that day. People began spitting acid, their hair turned into blazing and fiery strands of flames, and someone had grown wings? I thought this had to be a joke of some sort, some kind of prank from the news station. I flipped the channel. The same thing. Again, I tried a different channel, and another after that, and another after that; but they all said that very same thing. For some reason, my reality had just become a work of fiction.

I started to piece together the scattered thoughts ringing through my mind. The mysterious sickness, the people who didn't get sick, people getting super powers out of nowhere! It had to mean something, they had to be connected, I just had to figure out how– then Jefferson walked in. He had two things readily noticeable on his face: the first was a very annoyed yet confused expression, and the second was a fork sticking straight to his forehead. How did he manage to get a fork stuck to his head? I had no idea. He was trying in vain to remove it, and each time he managed to separate himself from the fork, it just flew back to him. Jefferson had managed to somehow make himself a walking magnet. After some great struggle, we finally managed to peel the fork off and get it to stay away from him. After all that, we settled down on the couch, and I felt a sudden pang of hunger while my mind drifted to the breakfast waiting for me. I looked down, and realized that my plate of eggs and toast was on my lap. "This shouldn't be possible!" I thought to myself. "I just sat down without my breakfast, and now it's here?" A jarring electronic beep interrupted my frenzied monologue. "Jefferson, can you go get that, my food is–" I was about to say that my food was ready, and then realized that my food was in my hand. That couldn't be my food, could it? My food was on my plate, not on the stove still. Then it all clicked. I had been holding the remote just a second ago, and now it had been turned into a plate of food after I got hungry.

It occurred to me that I now possessed something akin to low-tier reality manipulation (specifically that, no other rational option), able to alter small objects at will. One thing seemed logical to me – we should test out the limits of our new superpowers. The apartment erupted into chaos, as Jefferson magnetically flung forks, spoons, knives, and even a microwave around the room, while I reshaped, reformed and teleported random items, letting my imagination run wild. It was a whirlwind of flying metallic items and shape shifting objects when Vincente walked in, his eyes widening in disbelief at the scene before him.

As time passed, it became increasingly clear that the world was spiraling into a panic. The government was trying its hardest to contain these "Illigas" – people like me and Jefferson who defied the very laws of nature set by thousands of years of existence. The government started issuing bounties for the more powerful or troublesome people and even deployed their own Illigas as bounty hunters.

I suggested that we should lay low for a while, and try not to reveal our powers or stand out. But that was when Jefferson decided to immediately disregard what I said and put himself on the radar by walking out onto the balcony and snatching items from people's pockets. Coins, keys, and some jewelry flew up to Jefferson, who was standing in utter shock and disbelief on the balcony.
