Chereads / THE DRAGON’S BLOODLINE / Chapter 27 - Weakness

Chapter 27 - Weakness

"Kaelen..." Elysia's voice was faint, almost drowned out by the shadows.

A spark of hope flared in Kaelen's chest. He strained against the darkness, his heart hammering as he pushed toward her voice. Each step felt harder than the last, his legs trembling, but he couldn't give up.

"Elysia! Hold on!" His voice broke the silence, sounding small and lost in the vast blackness.

To his left, a flash of silver sliced through the air—Seraphina, her blade cutting down a creature as it lunged at her. She staggered back, blood seeping down her arm, but her eyes blazed with defiance. Even here, she fought on.

"Kaelen!" she yelled, breathless, her gaze snapping to him. "They're everywhere! We can't hold them off for long!"

Kaelen nodded, gripping his sword tighter, though its light was dimming fast. The flame that had guided them through countless battles now flickered, as if suffocated by the darkness itself. His fingers shook as he raised the blade, desperately trying to summon even a flicker of light to hold back the shadows.

But the darkness crept closer, smothering the last bit of warmth. The cold, mocking laughter of a figure echoed, his voice a taunt in the silence. "Struggle all you want. None of you are leaving this place."

Kaelen gritted his teeth, his heart pounding as he felt his strength draining away. He looked around, seeing Elysia and Seraphina standing by his side, their faces pale but resolute.

"We're not giving up," Elysia whispered fiercely, her hand gripping his shoulder. Her touch was warm, steadying him as she looked into his eyes. "We came too far for this to be the end."

Seraphina raised her blade, her voice a fierce whisper. "Then we go down fighting."

A surge of determination filled Kaelen. Together, they raised their weapons, ready to face the darkness. But the figure simply laughed, raising his hand as the ground beneath them trembled.

A wave of shadows crashed forward, swallowing them whole. Kaelen was thrown back, his vision blurring as he was pulled into the depths. He called out, his voice raw with panic, but all he heard was silence. Cold, endless silence.

Staggering to his feet, Kaelen blinked, disoriented. He could still feel Elysia and Seraphina somewhere close, but the darkness was thick, suffocating. He could barely make out their forms, struggling against creatures clawing at them from every direction.

The figure's voice, smooth and mocking, filled the silence. "Did you think you could escape me? Your light is fading, Kaelen. Soon, it will be gone."

Kaelen's chest tightened. He couldn't give up, not when they were so close. He clenched his fists, reaching deep within himself, to that small spark of hope still buried under his fear. He let it grow, feeling a faint warmth ignite inside him, pushing back the cold.

Just then, a scream tore through the darkness—Elysia's voice, filled with terror and pain. Kaelen's heart froze. He could barely make out her figure, struggling against a creature with gleaming claws. She was weakening, her strength slipping away, and he knew that if he didn't act now, he would lose her forever.

With a roar, Kaelen charged forward, his sword blazing with a renewed light, cutting through the shadows. The figure's mocking laughter faded as Kaelen tore through the creatures, his focus only on reaching Elysia.

But as he drew closer, the dark figure raised his hand, and shadows coiled around Elysia, pulling her deeper into the void.

"Elysia!" Kaelen screamed, lunging forward, but a wall of darkness blocked his path, trapping him as he watched her vanish.

The figure's voice echoed, chilling and triumphant. "Now she's mine, Kaelen. Try to save her… if you dare."

Kaelen stood alone, surrounded by shadows, with only the faintest echo of Elysia's scream lingering in his mind. His heart pounded as he realized the horrifying truth.

The battle was far from over—and he was running out of time.

Kaelen's pulse hammered in his ears, the oppressive darkness feeling heavier, more alive, wrapping around him like a vice. Shadows twisted and loomed, their jagged edges slicing through his resolve, mocking every desperate step he took forward. He forced himself to stay focused, clenching the hilt of his sword until his knuckles burned. Elysia was out there, trapped somewhere in this nightmare, and he'd promised he wouldn't leave her behind. No matter how impossible the odds seemed.

A hollow laugh echoed around him, chilling and sharp, freezing Kaelen where he stood. "You came all this way, Kaelen," the voice taunted, its mocking tone like needles against his skin. "But your strength is nothing here. You will break, just like she did."

Kaelen's chest tightened. The image of Elysia—strong, unyielding—flashed through his mind. No, he couldn't afford to think she'd broken. Not yet. Not while he was still standing. He gritted his teeth, stepping forward into the suffocating dark, his voice defiant. "If you think you can scare me, then you don't know what I'm willing to do."

The voice laughed again, louder this time, a sound that slithered around him, coiling like a snake. "Such bravado… it's almost amusing. But you're only delaying the inevitable."

Suddenly, the shadows surged, twisting into monstrous forms that towered over him, their red eyes gleaming like embers in the dark. Kaelen swung his sword, each swing cutting through the creatures, but for everyone he struck down, two more appeared, their claws reaching, their eyes filled with mocking hatred.

Each step felt heavier like he was sinking deeper into the shadows. His muscles burned, his breath coming in ragged gasps, but he pushed on, his gaze locked on the faint shimmer in the distance—the only clue that Elysia was close. He could feel her presence like a heartbeat, faint but constant, urging him forward.

Just when he thought he was breaking through, the darkness shifted, solidifying into a massive figure, a shadow more monstrous than any he'd faced. It stood tall, blocking his path completely, its form draped in writhing darkness, eyes gleaming with a sinister red glow. Kaelen froze, his grip tightening as fear gripped his heart. This was no ordinary foe. This was the darkness itself, manifested and waiting for him.

"Foolish boy," it whispered, each word echoing like thunder in the void. "You think you can save her? You're nothing here, Kaelen. This is my domain."

Kaelen's heart raced, but he forced himself to stand his ground, raising his sword in defiance. "I don't care who you are. If you're in my way, I'll cut through you."

The shadow creature let out a low, chilling laugh, and then, with a flick of its hand, a surge of darkness crashed toward Kaelen, a wave so fierce it nearly knocked him off his feet. He staggered back, barely keeping his balance, his sword trembling in his hands. For the first time, doubt clawed at him, a creeping fear whispering that he might not make it through.

But then he thought of Elysia, bound and vulnerable, waiting for him, relying on him. That single thought ignited a fire within him. Gritting his teeth, Kaelen pushed forward, slicing through the shadows, each swing of his sword blazing with defiant light. He could feel the darkness trying to claw its way into his mind, twisting his doubts, feeding his fear, but he held on, focusing solely on reaching her.

And then, through the chaos, he caught a glimpse—a faint outline in the darkness. Elysia. She was there, just a few steps ahead, chained and barely conscious. Her eyes flickered open, meeting his with a desperation that tore at him.

"Kaelen!" Her voice was weak, barely a whisper, but it filled him with renewed strength. He lunged forward, heart racing, but just as he reached her, the figure moved, stepping between them, its face twisted into a mocking smile.

"Did you think it would be that easy?" it sneered, raising a clawed hand. Before Kaelen could react, the shadow creature seized him, its grip like ice, paralyzing him. He struggled, thrashing against its hold, but it only tightened, drawing him closer, its voice a hiss in his ear.

"I've waited a long time for this," it whispered, each word dripping with malice. "To watch the light die in your eyes."

Kaelen's chest heaved, panic clawing at him as he felt his strength draining, the light from his sword dimming. He looked past the creature to Elysia, her face etched with fear and determination. He tried to reach out to her, tried to form the words to reassure her, but the darkness smothered him, choking off his voice.

And then, in a final, devastating move, the creature turned its gaze to Elysia, a cruel smile spreading across its face. "You failed her, Kaelen. And now, she's mine."

With a flick of its hand, the chains around Elysia tightened, dragging her further into the shadows, her terrified scream echoing through the void. Kaelen watched, helpless, as she was pulled away, her form fading into the darkness. His heart shattered, a cold fury building within him, but he couldn't move, couldn't break free. The shadows wrapped around him, squeezing, suffocating.

And in that final, agonizing moment, as the darkness closed over him, the figure's voice whispered in his ear, mocking, triumphant: "You've lost."

The void swallowed him, leaving only silence and the faint, haunting echo of Elysia's scream.
