Chapter 1 - The Job

Elora ran down the stairs in a quick pace. She didn't want to be late for the meeting Mother Jane told her she would be having with Mother Theodora. She wondered why she was suddenly called upon by Mother Theodora because she had never been for once significant to her. She tried to get a little info from Mother Jane about what the meeting was for but she wouldn't spill. She just hoped she hadn't gotten into trouble. She could hear the voices of the two Nuns as she approached the office's door. She let out a sigh and knocked on the door.

"Come in Elora!" Mother Theodora beckoned on her. She opened the door and stepped in.

"A lovely evening Mother Theodora, Mother Jane." She said with a courtesy.

"Have a seat my dear!" Mother Jane offered and she quietly sat beside her.

"You sent for me Mother Theodora!" She reminded her with a smile.

"Oh yes my dear! And I'm glad you could make it!"

"I couldn't refuse." She teased and a faint smile appeared on Mother Theodora's face.

"I see that!...." She paused for a moment, putting Elora in a quiet state.

"Well.... my dear...." She broke the silence and continued.

"You have been with us for a very long time and I vividly remember when Mother Jane found you lost on the streets before taking you in. That was...."

 "Eight years ago Mother Theodora!"

"Indeed! You still remember." She simply nodded.

"And we've all watched you grown into a beautiful and lovely young lady."

 "Thank you Mother."

"You're welcome. However dear.... you have come of age to take your own life into your hands. It's time you learnt how the outside world works on your own! We should have done this two years ago but Mother Jane wouldn't let me inform you. Well, she has finally come to terms with it and that's why you're here."

"But ma'am.... I have lived here all my life and I appreciate every step of the way you and the other Nuns have shown me. But I have no where to go. I can't start life like this. This has been my home for all my life. How will I adapt to a different world? Where do I get a new roof over my head?" She asked uncertain of lots of things. She wasn't prepared for this and didn't know how she was gonna deal with it. The two Nuns observed her mood was saddened and she seemed quite confused as to accept what they had just told her.

"Give us a moment Elora. Kindly wait outside." Mother Theodora said to her and she humbly obeyed.

"The young lady is totally confused. She can't start life on her own this way. I mean she doesn't even have a job. How's she gonna survive??" Mother Jane questioned. Mother Theodora paused to think for a moment and then she remembered something.

"Unless.... she could take the nob of a governess." She muttered.

"What! Governess?? Elora can't do that!" Mother Jane fought against the idea.

"And what makes you think so?? She's smart and has got a little bit of the education she needs to be a governess. She can begin with that. Lord Hintlesham spoke to me about his friend, a merchant who's in need of a governess for his 9 year old daughter and I'm sure Elora will be in the best position to be her governess. This is the only way we can best help her." She stated. Mother Jane thought about it and sighed.

"Well, let's talk to her then!" They beckoned on Elora to come in for the second time. Elora took her seat waiting to hear what they had to say.

"Elora... we've thought about all you said and we've decided to help you." Mother Theodora said.

 "Thank you Mother."

"There is a job offer opened by The Higgins as a governess in their household. Charles Higgins is in need of a governess for his little daughter and you will be in the best position to get the job.... that is if you're willing to begin with that so you can start from there. What do you think??" Elora wasn't expecting this. A governess?? She certainly wasn't ready to deal with kids' issues. But how bad could it be? It was just one kid not ten of them.

"It wouldn't be so bad!" She thought to herself.

 "Elora??"

"I will take the job for a start Mother. You have all been kind to me. Kind enough to get me a job to start my own life. I will forever cherish the moments we all spent together here. Where is the Higgins' family based?" She asked.

"In the next town not quite far from ours." Mother Jane answered.

"It's a good thing you accepted the offer."

"When do I leave??" She asked.

"In two days dear. The coachman will come get you. I will be sending the mailman a letter to the Higgins requesting your employment after which you'll be interviewed and giving the job. Understood?"

 "Yes Mother Theodora."

"Great! You should start getting your things ready. Two days isn't far away you know. So start preparing." She urged her.

 "I will Mother."

"You may leave now!" She discharged her, letting her go. Elora walked towards the door to leave.

"And one more thing Elora...." She paused to listen.

"We love you. Do not forget that."

"I love you too Mother Theodora, Mother Jane." They both smiled at her and she closed in and hugged them.

"Be a good girl when you go." Mother Jane said to her.

"I will... I will!" She stepped out of the office, closing the door behind them.

"I really am gonna miss her." Mother Jane said.

 "Me too!"

Elora walked silently with a damped mood to her room. She had just two days to spend here and face the world on her own. She sat on her bed, observing the room, she would definitely missed this place. It was the only place she could call home ever since she ran away from her biological home which was a terror on its own eight years ago. The Nuns had indeed treated her nicely and made her stay at the seminary with them very comfortable. She let out a bittersweet smile on her face as she began to carefully and gradually pack her stuffs while she waited for her fate at the house of The Higgins. She hoped and prayed that it would be a wonderful and positive one.
