Dressed in brief and dried blood, I make my way out of the dungeon and head back into the kitchen. The lights come on as soon as I step in, blinding me.
Lucia is standing by the door, scowling at me.
I'm in no mood. "Do not start with me, old woman."
"Look at you. You look like a monster. Which is why she left you. What kind of woman would want to bring a monster's baby into the world?"
She isn't wrong. I am a monster, born in a long line of monsters, moulded and shaped to be a killer. And a king of course. Feared and respected around the globe with greater wealth than most countries. And I'm not about to apologize for that.
I grab a glass and open a bottle of Ciro on the counter. I fill the glass to the top. "Your husband was a monster. He was one of Dvina's best killers. My father bragged that no one knew how to torture better than Dario."
