"So I told my mother to dismiss her and appoint a new governess," Elvessa continued with a smile.

But the truth was far from the pleasant picture she painted.

Her previous governess had been a young, beautiful woman, only a few years older than her, yet well-educated and refined. Though born a commoner, her demeanor and manners far exceeded those of many nobles.

Elvessa remembered vividly one soiree hosted by the Mordred family where she had attended with her governess. To her astonishment and fury, the young master of the Mordred family had taken a liking to her governess and had expressed his wish to court her.

How could he do that? She fumed at the memory. I am the lark, the cousin of the king of Dusthaven, and the daughter of a viscount! And yet that man had the audacity to court my governess?
