Chapter 19 - Chapter 19: Awakening in the Dead Land

"Here." Jess handed a small copper spoon to Gerred.

Gerred took it and saw that Jess also had one in his hand. He frowned and asked, "What the hell is this thing again?"

"It's for digging Grave Moss." As Jess was speaking, he began to scrape the leg bone with the small spoon and put a little into a small bag as he scraped.

Now it was Gerred's turn to feel sick. He rushed to the wall and started vomiting violently. But because he hadn't eaten anything in the morning, only some gastric juice came out.

"Seven silver coins per pound, Gerred." Jess said with pursed lips. After saying that, he continued to scrape.

"Seven silver coins!" Gerred shouted. Then he thought for a moment and realized something was wrong. "Damn you. Didn't you say you wouldn't sell Grave Moss?! Even if it were seven gold coins, it would be useless!"

Although he was cursing, he still wiped his mouth and ran to the side of the stone coffin. He pushed the coffin lid aside again and started scraping.

Although there was only a layer covering the surface of the corpse, after really scraping for a while, a considerable amount of Grave Moss was scraped out. Although it might not reach a pound, but weighing it, it should be as much as a bottle of cola. There was definitely half a catty.

After doing this for a long time, it wasn't so disgusting anymore. While scraping, the two of them pushed the coffin lid aside again and continued to scrape upward.

When it was completely pushed open, Gerred saw the face of this corpse.

"Jess, hey." Gerred nudged Jess, who was still engrossed in scraping Grave Moss beside him with his elbow.

"Look, does this person seem to be looking at me? I'm afraid I'm having hallucinations."

"Huh?" Jess glanced over and saw that the face of the owner of this corpse was actually quite intact. Lying in the dirty water with eyes open, it was truly lifelike.

At this moment, the corpse's eyeballs turned and looked at Jess.

"He's not looking at you. He's looking at me." After saying that, Jess continued scraping.

Gerred slapped Jess on the back of his head and shouted, "He's not alive at all!"

"Ah?!"

Jess was suddenly awakened by this slap. In order to scrape the Grave Moss carefully, his brain would automatically block out terrifying things.

The corpse suddenly grabbed Gerred's arm. Gerred let out a cry. Jess quickly chopped off the living corpse's arm with an axe. The dwarf jumped and shook off the arm. He grabbed the bag and tools and ran out.

Jess picked up the axe and followed Gerred. When he was about to slip and almost fall, the corpse suddenly sat up from the stone coffin, let out a weak gasp, and crawled up and chased after them.

The two of them didn't care about what was behind them at all and ran up with all their strength. When they were almost near the tomb door, they saw that a walking corpse was actually blocking the door!

"Get out of the way!"

Gerred shouted and charged forward with his sword, neatly cutting off the other's head and kicking the remaining headless body down.

Jess followed and ran out of the tomb. To his surprise, in the cemetery in front of him, there were already zombies standing everywhere.

Just as the two were walking towards the direction of the broken hole they came from, they heard a bunch of strange noises.

Several hunched humanoid monsters covered in rotten flesh were pushing aside layers of shrubs and bypassing tombstones and coming towards them. Some of them were running on all fours for a while and then on two feet for a while in order to run faster. They didn't look like humans but rather like a group of frenzied beasts.

"Ghouls... Hurry, run in the opposite direction!" Gerred pointed behind and pushed Jess to run quickly.

Jess turned and ran. But he knew that there was only one place where the two of them could get out now, which was the broken hole behind those ghouls.

Other places were blocked by tall fences. There were pointed decorations on top to prevent people from sneaking in. It was impossible to climb out.

But the ghouls were extremely fast. They ran through the group of stupid zombies like a pack of wild dogs and rushed towards the two people. Jess had almost no time to think of a solution.

When they reached the fence, the dwarf threw out all the bags and luggage containing herbs at once. Then he looked at Jess and said, "Come here."

"What are you going to do?"

The dwarf didn't answer. He grabbed Jess. Before Jess could say anything, he threw him out as well.

Jess's mind went blank. He only felt himself being thrown into the air by a strange force. He flew out, scraping against the iron spikes. His clothes were torn in several places and his back was extremely painful.

After falling to the ground, he was dizzy. He grimaced and touched his back. Fortunately, there was no bleeding. It might just be a scratch.

Realizing that Gerred was still inside, Jess grabbed the railing and said, "Are you stupid? How are you going to get out?"

"You run quickly. Go back to Raven Hill. If I can't handle these ghouls..." The dwarf brandished his sword in his hand and didn't say anything more.

"Shut up... Let me think." Jess looked around and then at the zombies and ghouls approaching from over there. Suddenly, it seemed that he remembered a similar scene from a TV drama.

"The Walking Dead", right?

He picked up the logging axe and slammed it hard on the iron railing. The deafening metallic knocking sound "clang" startled Gerred. Even the zombies and ghouls over there hesitated for a moment because of this noise.

"Now, run... Gerred, find a way to reach that hole on the other side."

"I understand. Be careful!" Gerred took advantage of the time when those ghouls and zombies were wondering what was going on with this noise and rolled into the bushes beside him.

After the dwarf disappeared, Jess stood alone in front of the fence, tightly holding the rusty logging axe. Facing the swaying shadows standing upright in the cemetery shrouded in mist, he suddenly felt a strong sense of loneliness clutching his heart.

He swung the axe again and slammed it hard on the iron railing. The zombies seemed to be awakened and started moving towards this side.

Before he could swing the axe again, a ghoul suddenly jumped in front of his face. Its abnormally long arm suddenly reached out through the gap in the railing and almost grabbed Jess's neck!

Jess was so scared that his heart skipped a beat. He took two steps back and looked at the monster with swollen eyes, a face full of rotten flesh, and teeth as sharp as a wild wolf. Unconsciously, he swallowed.

At this time, the second, third, and fourth ghouls all climbed onto the railing, growled and reached out their arms. One of them even sprayed out green pus, almost splashing on Jess.

These ghouls were like a group of starved and frenzied baboons, and Jess was like a juicy fruit in their eyes.

Jess hesitated for a long time and didn't dare to go forward. Just then, one of the ghouls seemed to hear something. It paused for a moment and glanced behind.

"Damn you." Jess cursed in his native language and rushed forward and slammed the axe on the railing again. This time, it immediately caught the attention of all the ghouls. They reached out madly again to grab Jess's arm and collar. Jess retreated several steps and was tripped by a stone. After checking his arms and body and finding no wounds, he breathed a sigh of relief.

"You brainless things, come on!" He shouted. He felt that his voice was really three or four levels weaker than the sound of the axe hitting the railing. So he took the opportunity to change positions and hit it again, dodging the attacks of those ghouls again.

This time, he felt as if he had found the trick.

More and more zombies gathered. Each one was pressed against the railing and staring at Jess intently. But Jess was already used to it. Each hit was safer than the last.

Until a ghoul raised its head and glanced at the top of the fence.

Seeing this scene, Jess was stunned and felt his throat getting drier and drier.

He coughed softly to moisten his throat. The ghoul suddenly jumped up and almost grabbed the pointed top of the fence.

"I..." He mumbled and hurriedly picked up the cloth bag and prepared to run. At this moment, suddenly someone grabbed his collar.

"Get lost!" Jess struggled free violently. Just as he saw Gerred standing behind him.

"It's me, it's me!" Seeing Jess sweating profusely, Gerred shook his neck hard and then said, "Now, let's go!"

"Go... Let's go."

The two people gathered all their luggage and ran into the forest. They didn't stop until they couldn't hear the roars of zombies anymore.

Jess threw his already dirty and yellowish shirt into a bush and put on a new brown linen shirt. He sat on the ground, staring wide-eyed and panting continuously.

"You know, Jess." Gerred swallowed and said, "Even the bravest warrior among the Wildhammers couldn't stay calm in such a situation. I guarantee it. You are definitely the bravest human being I have ever seen. If you can't become a knight or a member of the royal guard in the future, then that kid Wrynn must be blind, or the whole kingdom must have some problems with their minds."

After a long time, Jess murmured, "I will never come here again."

Gerred couldn't help but laugh. Jess looked at him and then laughed too.

The two laughed for a while. Then Jess asked, "What time is it?"

The smile on Gerred's face gradually disappeared. Then he said coldly, "If I could afford a pocket watch, would I still be risking my life here with you?"
