Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: Not So Filial

The days in the village passed by in a steady rhythm, each one blending into the next. Mia continued to observe her family, soaking up the unique quirks and habits of each member. She was growing more attuned to their way of life, learning to anticipate their routines and actions. But on this particular day, something unexpected happened.

It started with a visitor—a noblewoman dressed in fine silk, her hair adorned with delicate hairpins that shimmered in the sunlight. She arrived at the house without warning, her presence instantly changing the atmosphere. Mia sensed the tension in the air as Lila and Ethan exchanged a quick, worried glance.

Lila stepped forward to greet the woman, her face carefully composed. "Madam Wang, what brings you here today?" she asked, her tone polite but guarded.

The woman, whom Mia now understood to be Madam Wang, surveyed the room with a critical eye, her gaze lingering on each member of the family. She seemed unimpressed, her expression cool and distant.

"I've come to speak with you about your son, Felix," Madam Wang announced, her voice carrying a hint of disdain. "It has come to my attention that he has been associating with my nephew, and I am concerned about the influence he may be having."

Mia felt a surge of indignation on behalf of her brother, but she remained silent, observing the interaction with keen interest. Felix stood to the side, his face impassive, though Mia could see the tension in his shoulders.

Ethan stepped forward, his expression calm but firm. "Felix is a good boy. He wouldn't lead anyone astray. Perhaps your nephew has simply made a new friend."

Madam Wang's lips tightened, her displeasure evident. "I have heard otherwise. My nephew is destined for great things. He cannot afford to be dragged down by associations with those of…lesser standing."

Mia's fists clenched, a sense of helpless frustration washing over her. She wished she could defend her family, to speak out against this woman who looked down on them so easily. But she was just a child, and all she could do was watch as the scene unfolded.

Lila, however, remained unruffled. She met Madam Wang's gaze steadily, a faint smile playing on her lips. "We may not be of noble blood, Madam Wang, but we are not without our own strengths. Felix may not be destined for the same path as your nephew, but he is loyal and clever, and he knows the value of family."

Madam Wang's expression darkened, and for a moment, Mia thought she might lash out. But instead, the noblewoman merely sniffed, lifting her chin with a look of contempt. "Very well. I have said my piece. It would be wise for you to remember your place."

With that, Madam Wang turned and swept out of the house, her footsteps echoing through the silence she left behind. As the door closed behind her, the family let out a collective sigh, the tension slowly dissipating.

Ethan shook his head, a wry smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. "People like her think they rule the world, but they don't know the half of it."

Felix relaxed, the tension easing from his shoulders as he grinned at his father. "She acts like she's above everyone else, but she'll never understand what it means to have a family like ours."

Lila placed a reassuring hand on Felix's shoulder, her eyes soft with affection. "We may not have the titles or the wealth, but we have each other. And that is something no one can take away from us."

Mia felt a warm glow of pride as she looked at her family, their unity unshaken by the noblewoman's harsh words. They may not be perfect, and they might not fit into the mold that society expected of them, but they were strong, resilient, and fiercely loyal to one another.

As the family resumed their daily routines, Mia made a silent vow to herself. She would grow up strong and capable, just like her parents and siblings. She would learn their ways, absorb their wisdom, and one day, she would stand beside them, ready to face whatever challenges life might throw their way.

In that moment, Mia knew that she belonged. This was her family, and no matter what others might say, they would always have each other's backs. They were not heroes, but they didn't need to be. They were enough just as they were.
