Chapter 116 - The Web Tightens

Gathering the Pieces

The allied camp bustled with urgency. Soldiers hammered new barricades into place while warded barriers glimmered faintly under Lyara's enchantments. The war tent stood at the center of it all, where Leon and the allied leaders convened around a massive table strewn with maps and reports.

Princess Samirah Bint Khadija of Al-Qarath stood imperiously, her golden robes catching the lantern light. Her voice, sharp and commanding, cut through the tense air. "This alliance wavers. If we continue to falter, Lysander will exploit every weakness."

Prince Jianren Xiang of Zhaoling, ever calm and composed, replied with measured precision. "Rushing decisions won't strengthen us, Princess. Recklessness leads to ruin."

Samirah's emerald eyes narrowed, her tone biting. "And yet inaction invites chaos. Or do your philosophies suggest meditating until Lysander hands us the victory?"

Jianren's tiger spirit flicked its tail, a silent reflection of his master's restraint. "Strategy, not impulse, wins wars."

Leon raised a hand, his voice steady. "Enough. Both your kingdoms bring valuable strengths to this alliance, but we must act together. Lysander thrives on our discord. We won't give him the satisfaction."

The tension eased slightly, though Samirah's sharp gaze lingered on Jianren. Leon turned to Atlas, who had been standing silently at the edge of the tent. "How are the patrols?"

Atlas stepped forward, his tone steady. "Bjorn and Nathan have doubled the watch. Lyara's wards should detect any further infiltrators."

"Good," Leon said, his resolve firm. "This alliance will hold."

Strengthening Defenses

Bjorn and Nathan coordinated the defense effort, their voices carrying across the camp as soldiers reinforced barricades and checked supplies. Lyara worked tirelessly, weaving enchantments into the perimeter wards.

Nathan approached Leon with a glowing crystal in hand. "We found this near the eastern perimeter. It's faint, but there's residual magic. Someone tampered with the wards."

Leon frowned, examining the crystal. "Lysander's influence is reaching deeper than we thought."

Bjorn joined them, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword. "If there's another infiltrator, we can't give them time to strike again."

Leon nodded. "Double the patrols. Tighten the security at the supply depots. We can't afford another mistake."

The Shadow's Whispers

That night, unease hung over the camp like a dark cloud. Soldiers exchanged wary glances, whispers of betrayal spreading like wildfire. The morale of the alliance trembled under the weight of suspicion.

In the war tent, the allied leaders convened once more. Samirah leaned over the map, her fingers tracing the routes leading to Lysander's stronghold. "This sabotage is proof that someone within our camp is a traitor."

Jianren's tone remained calm, though his tiger spirit's glowing eyes never left Samirah. "Accusations without evidence will only deepen the fractures in this alliance."

"Accusations?" Samirah scoffed. "I'm simply pointing out the obvious. Perhaps you'd prefer to meditate while the enemy undermines us?"

Leon raised his hand, cutting through their argument. "Enough. We've already agreed to investigate. Lyara is tracking the magical traces. Until we have answers, we focus on the task at hand."

Atlas stepped forward, his voice carrying an edge. "Lysander thrives on division. The moment we turn on each other, we've already lost."

Leon's gaze softened briefly as he looked at Atlas. "He's right. Let's end this before it spirals any further."

A Dangerous Revelation

The following morning, Lyara approached Leon with urgent news. "The wards picked up movement near the eastern perimeter. It matches the magical signature we found earlier."

Leon wasted no time. "Gather Bjorn and Nathan. We'll handle this ourselves."

The group moved swiftly, tracking the traces to the edge of the camp. There, they found a cloaked figure crouched near the supply wagons. The faint light of dawn illuminated their face—it was the same Fleurian defector Leon had confronted before.

Leon's voice was cold and sharp. "Stand down. You're surrounded."

The defector smirked. "So persistent, Mondell."

Before Leon could respond, the defector unleashed a burst of energy, scattering the group. Nathan raised a barrier, blocking the blast. "You're not getting away this time."

Bjorn lunged forward, his sword flashing. The defector dodged but stumbled, their energy clearly fading. With a precise strike, Bjorn disarmed them, and the group moved to restrain the infiltrator.

A Fragile Unity

Back in the war tent, the defector sat bound, their expression a mix of defiance and resignation. Samirah was the first to speak, her tone icy. "Let's skip the formalities. Who are you working for?"

The defector smirked, their voice laced with mockery. "You already know."

Leon stepped closer, his gaze steady. "Lysander. What's his plan?"

The defector laughed bitterly. "You think I'd tell you? Even if I did, it's too late. He's already won."

Jianren's voice was calm but firm. "Then why do you seem so defeated?"

The defector's smirk faltered as Lyara entered, holding a pulsing crystal. "This will reveal the traces of magic on their body. Resist, and you won't like the consequences."

The defector's confidence wavered as the crystal pulsed, revealing a cipher etched into their magical aura. Lyara studied it carefully, her expression grim. "It's a directive. Lysander's forces are targeting the southern outpost."

Leon's chest tightened. "The outpost is critical to our supply lines. If we lose it—"

Bjorn cut in, his voice decisive. "We won't. We'll leave immediately."

Leon nodded, his resolve firm. "Gather the troops. We move at first light."
