Chapter 4 - The Burden of Truth

The next morning arrived, bright and crisp, yet Oliver felt a heaviness in his chest. Despite the hope he had felt the previous night, the reality of his family's situation loomed large. He rolled out of bed, the familiar creaks of the old wooden floor echoing in the silence.

His mother was already up, her hands busy in the kitchen. The smell of brewing coffee filled the air, a small comfort amidst the tension that hung over the household.

"Morning, love," Margaret said, her voice gentle but tinged with worry. "How was the event?"

"It was good," Oliver replied, pouring himself a cup of coffee. "I met some people and got a few contacts."

"That's wonderful! You're one step closer," she said, though the uncertainty in her eyes betrayed her true feelings.

As Oliver sipped his coffee, he felt a pang of guilt. He wanted to share his success, but the burden of his father's health weighed heavily on his heart. The thought of his father's condition resurfaced, and he knew it was time to confront the reality he had been avoiding.

After breakfast, he found his father in the living room, looking pale and weary. Thomas was watching a news program, but his attention was distant, as if he were lost in his thoughts.

"Dad, can we talk?" Oliver asked, his voice steady despite the turmoil inside him.

"Sure, son. What's on your mind?" Thomas replied, but Oliver could see the tension in his father's shoulders.

"I think we need to discuss your health," Oliver said, his heart pounding. "I'm worried about you. You've been looking unwell, and I think you should see a doctor."

Thomas stiffened at the mention of a doctor, and Oliver could see the familiar stubbornness creeping into his father's demeanor. "I told you, I'm just getting older. There's no need to make a fuss."

"Dad, this isn't just about age," Oliver pressed, frustration bubbling to the surface. "You're not yourself, and we can't ignore it any longer."

At that moment, Margaret entered the room, her expression mirroring Oliver's concern. "Thomas, please listen to Oliver. We can't keep pretending everything is fine. You need to take care of yourself for us."

The silence that followed was thick with unspoken words. Oliver could see the fight in his father's eyes as he struggled to maintain his façade of strength.

"I appreciate your concern, but I'm fine," Thomas said, his voice firm but lacking conviction.

Oliver felt tears prick at the corners of his eyes, a mixture of anger and helplessness. "You're not fine! You haven't been fine for a while. I'm scared, Dad. I don't want to lose you."

Thomas's expression softened, and for a moment, Oliver thought he might finally relent. But instead, his father's pride took over. "You don't need to worry about me. I've been through worse."

Frustrated, Oliver stood up, pacing the room. "But you shouldn't have to go through anything alone! We're a family. We're supposed to support each other."

Margaret placed a gentle hand on Thomas's shoulder, her voice trembling. "Please, Thomas. For Oliver's sake, let's just get it checked out."

The room fell silent, the tension crackling like electricity. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Thomas sighed deeply, the fight leaving his body. "Fine. I'll go to the doctor."

Relief washed over Oliver, but he knew this was only the first step. He felt a flicker of hope, but the weight of their financial struggles loomed ever larger in his mind.

As the day progressed, Oliver threw himself into his job search, but the gnawing worry for his father overshadowed everything. He couldn't shake the feeling that time was running out, and he needed to do something fast.

In the evening, as he prepared dinner, his phone buzzed with a message from Isabella. "Hey! I've got a lead on a summer internship. Let's meet up and discuss it."

Excitement surged through him. This could be the opportunity he desperately needed. He replied quickly, arranging to meet her the next day.

That night, as he lay in bed, Oliver's thoughts drifted between hope and fear. He was determined to change their circumstances, but he also knew that the road ahead would be fraught with challenges. Yet, he felt a new resolve stirring within him. He would fight for his family and his dreams, no matter the cost.
