Chereads / The Tycoon’s Heiress / Chapter 9 - THE ESCAPE

Chapter 9 - THE ESCAPE

With James trailing closely behind, I hurried out of the boardroom, saying in a trembling voice, "Let's get out of here." I needed to take a breather because the meeting was weighing hard on my shoulders.

"Where to?" he said, his brow creased with worry.

With a beating heart, I answered, "Anywhere but here." "Let's visit the park,"

We got into my car, and while I drove in quiet, thoughts of Harold's betrayal kept racing through my head. James's steady, comforting presence was palpable by my side. I parked the car as soon as we got to the park and got out to breathe in the clean, pure air.

"At last," I exclaimed, experiencing a wave of relaxation. "This was something I needed."

James looked around at the verdant surroundings and said, "Me too." "It's nice to take a brief break from the chaos."

As we strolled down the meandering road, the sun made its way through the trees, creating uneven shadows on the earth. Far away, I could hear kids laughing and having fun, which was a sharp contrast to the stress we had just left behind.

"How often do you come here?" Attempting to lighten the mood, I asked.

He said, chuckling quietly, "Not really." But I understand your preference for it. It's quiet there.

"Yes," I answered, experiencing a wave of serenity pass through me. As a child, I used to come here to get away from the pressure of my family's expectations.

"Pressure?" James asked, looking at me with real curiosity. "What level of pressure?"

I sighed, memories weighing heavily on my heart. "My family has always thought I should be flawless. I felt obligated to meet their expectations, particularly following the death of my grandfather.

With a serious face, James added, "I can relate." "My family, particularly in light of the controversy, has its own expectations. It seems as though you're always attempting to validate yourself.

"Exactly," I answered, sensing a bond growing between us. "It drains me."

We located a bench and took a seat, feeling a little less burdened by the world. "Emma, what dreams do you have?" James asked, his eyes unwavering.

I softly said, "I want to make my family proud." "I wish to make the business something my grandfather would be pleased with. However, I also wish to forge my own route.

His gaze swept across my life as he questioned, "And what about your personal life?" "What is it that you want?"

I paused, feeling exposed. "I want to find someone I can trust, someone who gets me. But it seems unattainable given everything that is going on.

James nodded his face contemplative. "I get that. It's difficult to find trust, particularly in this day and age.

"Yes," I replied, with a mixture of optimism and sorrow. "However, I'm prepared to battle for it."

The mood changed as we sat there, and I could feel our anxiety rising. My heart pounded as I turned to see James. With my voice hardly audible above a whisper, I murmured, "Thank you for being here for me."

With an intense look, he answered, "I'll always be here, Emma." "Regardless of what occurs."

That was when something changed. Drawn to him, I drew in closer, and before I knew it, a gentle kiss had touched our lips. I could only feel the energy between us and the warmth of his body as the world around us vanished.

But a wave of horror passed over me as the kiss got deeper. I abruptly withdrew my heart racing. I said in a trembling voice, "Wait." "What are we doing?"

James gave me a confused expression as he gazed at me. "Explain what you mean."

My breathing quickened as I muttered, "I can't do this." "Not right now. Not with everything going on.

He whispered, "Emma," and reached for my hand. "You are important to me. Together, we can solve this problem.

"Yes, but what if it makes things more difficult?" With tears prickling at the corners of my eyes, I answered. "What if everything becomes ruined?"

"You have to take risks sometimes," he remarked in a quiet, comforting voice. "Fear cannot stop you from moving forward."

"I want to avoid getting hurt," I said, stuttering in my voice. "I've experienced a lot already."

James gave my hand a light squeeze. "I swear that I won't harm you. But you must grant me access.

I felt the weight of his words as I stared into his eyes. I was afraid to show him my vulnerability, even though I wanted to trust him. "I'm not sure if I'm prepared for this," I remarked, withholding my hand.

"All right," he replied, his face softening. "I comprehend. We can go slowly.

Then the moment was cut short as my phone buzzed in my pocket. I took it out and quickly examined the screen. It came from an unidentified phone number.

"Emma, we must speak." I am aware of your whereabouts.

I looked up at James and felt my heart rush, panicking. With trembling in my voice, I added, "I think someone is watching us."

"What do you mean?" he said, his face displaying worry.

My voice was shaking as I said, "I just got a message from someone who knows where we are." "This is not good."

James became serious in his expression. "We must leave this place."

I experienced a wave of urgency as we got to our feet. I kept having the impression that someone was watching us, and I really didn't want anyone to find out about our relationship.

I noticed a distant individual carrying a camera that was concealed behind a tree as we were about to leave. As soon as I recognized what was going on, my heart fell.

"James, we must leave right now!" Taking hold of his hand and yanking him away, I whispered.

"What's wrong, Emma?" His tone was confused as he asked.

I gestured to the figure and said, "There's someone over there." "I believe they are capturing images of us."

James's face became stern. "Let's leave this place. We are unable to give them anything.

My heart pounded with anxiety and panic as we hurried out of the park. I was aware that this was merely the start of a new set of difficulties, and I had to guard both my heart and the legacy of my family. I didn't want our relationship to become tabloid fodder, especially because there was someone out there who was eager to discredit us.

With a mixture of fear and resolve, I cast a final look back at the park as we arrived at the car. I was prepared to face anything came my way head-on.
