Chereads / The Tycoon’s Heiress / Chapter 14 - THE REVELATION

Chapter 14 - THE REVELATION

I sat at my workstation, poring over the documentation we had obtained concerning Harold and his dealings as the sun was just starting to drop. James had returned home to collect himself, but I had an intense need to find out more. I had to learn the real story behind Harold's deceit.

I silently told myself, "Okay, Emma, focus," as I turned the pages. I sensed that Harold was the one making the threats and stirring up the media storm. I only had to provide evidence.

A pattern started to show itself as I went through the contracts and financial accounts. I saw differences in the contributions given to the nonprofit Harold had been supporting. Why would he look to be passing money through it?

Grabbing my phone, I made a call to James. Hey, would you please return? I believe I may be onto something.

With a rush in his voice, he answered, "On my way."

I kept going through the documents as I waited for him to come. As I read through emails between Harold and Michael Russo, discussing business arrangements that were dubious at best, my heart raced. Feeling the weight of the proof in my hands, I inhaled deeply.

I didn't spend any time in welcoming James. As I spread the paperwork across the table, I exclaimed, "Look at this." "Harold has been hiding his own dubious activities by manipulating the charity funds."

James moved in closer, studying the papers with a frown. "Emma, this is huge." Harold's chances of winning are gone if we can demonstrate this.

I responded, "I know," with a mixture of fear and exhilaration. But we must exercise caution. He is not going to take this lightly.

With steely gaze, James said, "Let's confront him." "He can't get away with this," we said.

"Are you certain?" My heart was pounding at the prospect, so I asked. "What happens if he tries to scare us?"

James answered with an unshakable face, "He will." "Yet we must not allow fear to rule us. We must maintain our position.

I felt a wave of resolve go over me as I nodded. Alright, let's get started. But we must approach this with caution.

My heart was thumping in my chest when I stood outside Harold's office later that evening. James was standing next to me, providing comfort.

His voice was low as he questioned, "Are you ready?"

"As prepared as I'll ever be," I answered, inhaling deeply. "Let's carry out this."

As soon as we entered, Harold raised his head from his desk and grinned smugly. If it's not my favorite niece and her boyfriend, then, then, well. Why have you come here?

"Stop being so nice, Harold," I uttered in a calm voice. "We must discuss your business dealings."

Oh, I see. Is that accurate? He responded, obviously amused, as he leaned back in his chair. And precisely what do you believe you are aware of?

I raised my voice and added, "I know you've been manipulating the charity funds." "And I can back it up with evidence."

Harold's smile faded as he became serious. Proof? You believe you can just go in here and level allegations devoid of evidence?

"I possess emails, bank records everything," I exclaimed, experiencing a sudden wave of self-assurance. "I won't let you get away with using the charity as a front for your shady dealings," the person said.

"Emma, you're being naive," he remarked in a condescending manner. Do you believe you can defeat me? You are merely a young girl dressing up in a world dominated by men.

I could feel my rage building. Harold, I'm not a small girl! Since I am now in charge of this business, I won't allow you to destroy it.

With a sinister look, he leaned forward and said, "Ruin it?" It's going to be you who ruins everything. Do you believe you are up to this? You will not succeed, and I will be here to witness it.

"Is that a danger?" James spoke up, approaching me with an angry look on his face. Harold, you can't scare us any more.

Harold laughed, hate shining in his eyes. "Oh, I'm not attempting to scare you," I'm just reporting the truth. You'll regret crossing me since you're in over your head.

A shiver went down my spine, but I was not going to back down. "I refuse to give you any more power over this business or my life."

As he waved us off, he said, "Good luck with that." But keep in mind that I am connected. In an instance, I might destroy your reputation.

With a calm voice, I shot back, "We'll see about that." "I have no fear of you."

I was filled with determination as we turned to go. Harold wouldn't be able to win. I was prepared to pay any price to defend the legacy of my family.

I inhaled deeply as soon as we were outside and felt the tension from the confrontation start to lessen. "It's unbelievable that he believes he can scare us in that way," I exclaimed, my voice quivering with rage.

Assuring me not to worry, James put a comforting hand on my shoulder. "We'll use the evidence we have,"

My phone buzzed in my pocket at that very moment. When I took it out, I saw a message from an unidentified number. As I was reading that, my heart fell.

Emma, stop digging. You're not aware of what's ahead of you.

James caught my attention as my heart raced. James, things are becoming serious now. They are aware of our actions.

His gaze darkened as he replied, "We need to be careful." "But right now, we can't give up."

There was a shiver down my spine as we left Harold's office. We were in deeper than I could have ever thought, and the threats were genuine. However, I resisted allowing dread to rule me. Whatever the cost, I was prepared to find the truth.
