Chereads / The Tycoon’s Heiress / Chapter 2 - THE CONTRACT

Chapter 2 - THE CONTRACT

The following day, I was seated at my kitchen table with papers all over the place and my laptop open. Even though there was a lot of sunlight coming in through the window, I couldn't help but feel nervous and excited at the same time. I was going to draft a baby contract. Even though it sounded absurd, I was committed to making this work.

"Will you actually follow through on this?" With her arms folded, Sophia leaned over the counter to ask. "It feels so... out of the ordinary."

I bit my lip in response, saying, "I know." However, I must safeguard my future. I have no other ideas on how to satisfy my grandfather's requirements except this one.

Sophia arched an eyebrow. And you believe James is the best person to handle this?

I said, casting a sidelong glance at my laptop, "I don't know yet." However, he looks receptive. He's also confident and handsome. That must be significant, right?

Without a doubt, she smirked and replied. But you must use caution. This choice is significant.

"I understand that," I replied, experiencing a surge of resolve. However, it's not as though I'm proposing to him. It is merely an agreement.

"All right, so tell me what will this contract contain?" Sophia leaned down to read over my shoulder before she asked.

I started typing, quickly moving my fingers across the keyboard. "This agreement is made between Emma Carter and James Black with the intention of becoming parents," let's see.

"Seems official," Sophia jokingly said. "Additionally,"

I went on, feeling both excited and uneasy. "Both parties agree to maintain clear communication and set boundaries throughout the process," I said. "And I should also mention financial support."

Sophia nodded and remarked, "Good idea." "You should ensure your protection."

I penned, "James consents to supply funding for the child's upbringing, encompassing healthcare and education."

Sophia laughed, "Wow, look at you, getting all serious." "How about the right to visitation?"

I took a moment to reflect. "Perhaps that ought to be included. It is crucial that the youngster gets to know both parents.

"That's right," she stated, her mischievous gaze glistening. And how about the conditions of the partnership? You don't want him to start thinking anything.

I felt lighter after laughing. "All right, how about this: Both parties agree to keep things strictly business-related, and this agreement does not constitute a romantic relationship."

"Excellent!" With a hand clap, Sophia spoke. "Emma, you're really doing this."

I exclaimed, feeling a wave of confidence, "I am." "Let's wrap this up now so I can meet James later."

Even when I had finished typing, I was still nervous. Was this something I was actually going to do? However, I ignored my doubts. I had to get in charge of my life.

James and I met later that night at a little downtown café. There was mellow music playing in the background, creating a nice mood. I was excited and nervous at the same time as I walked up to him.

"Emma, hello!" James smiled warmly and invitingly as he said hello. "You look fantastic."

"Many thanks! You too," I answered, experiencing a heat in my cheeks. "I carried the agreement."

His eyebrow went up, obviously interested. "You really mean it, this?"

"With no doubt," I said, taking the contract out of my bag. "I believe that's the most appropriate course of action."

James picked up the document and started to carefully study it. Taking a quick look at me, he remarked, "This is quite detailed." "You've given this some thought."

I said, feeling a mixture of pride and nervousness. "I had to," I said. "I want to confirm that we both understand each other."

While reading, he gave a nod. And you find all of this to be acceptable? It's quite the commitment, after all.

"I am aware," I uttered steadily. But I think I made the right decision. I have to make sure of my future.

With a solemn gaze, James looked up. And what happens if emotions are involved? This arrangement is distinct.

I inhaled deeply as I sensed an odd connection between us. "I get that. However, I believe we can maintain a formal tone. I want to keep things simple.

"All right," he replied, returning the document to me. "Sign it, please."

I experienced an adrenaline surge while we both signed the paper. I said, glancing over the signed papers, "There we go." "It's official,"

With a faint smile, James said, "Officially crazy." "However, I respect your tenacity."

I said, "Thanks," with a mixture of exhilaration and relief. "I'm prepared to see this through."

James's phone buzzed on the table at that very moment. His expression changed as he took a quick peek at the screen. He got to his feet and said, "I need to take this."

I said, "Sure, go ahead," with a hint of curiosity.

James took a step back and talked into the phone, keeping his voice quiet. Although I was unable to hear what he was saying, I could tell by the way his posture was becoming tense. With an increasingly concerned expression, he ran a hand through his hair.

A few minutes later, he was back at the table, clearly rattled. He apologized for that, his voice strained. "It came as a surprise."

"What took place?" Worried, I asked. "You appear anxious."

His gaze darted away as he hesitated. Just a few business-related items. There is nothing to be concerned about.

I arched an eyebrow, not quite persuaded. "Are you certain? You know you can chat to me.

Leaning his palm over his face, James sighed. It's only intricate. I was surprised to receive that call tonight.

"Intricate how?" I pushed, driven by a sense of need. "You are able to trust me."

His expression softened as he turned to gaze at me. It concerns my family. They don't precisely agree with my decisions.

There was a twinge of empathy. "I get that. My family is also not very happy with my circumstances.

"Really?" he inquired, his curiosity piqued. "What are their opinions?"

Sensitive, I said, "They think I'm making a mistake." "But I have to act in my own best interests."

With a steady stare, James gave a nod. "I respect your fortitude. It's difficult to disagree with relatives.

I tried to lighten the situation by saying, "Apparently, neither is it for you." "Yet both of us are making decisions for our futures."

"That's right," he answered, a sliver of a smile returning. "And I believe we can pull this off."

My phone buzzed again just then. Uncle Harold had sent me another message as I looked down: "Emma, never forget who's really in charge."

James caught my attention as my heart raced. "This will be more difficult than I anticipated."

James's face changed when he saw how upset I was. "What's that?"

I attempted to dismiss it, saying, "Just family drama." However, I felt in my heart that this was only the beginning. A mixture of uncertainty and optimism filled my mind as I stared into James's eyes. How did I end up in this situation?
