Chapter 70 - The Alliance

POV: Sarah

The strange alliance of humans, zombies, and the mysterious Kane made for an uneasy group as they pushed forward, deeper into the forest. The oppressive atmosphere only thickened, each step taking them closer to whatever lay at the heart of the mutation.

Sarah glanced warily between the zombies that had helped them earlier and Kane, who seemed to know more than he let on. She kept her weapon ready, her body tense as she scanned their surroundings. "So, Kane," she said, her voice barely above a whisper, "you're certain this core is real? That it's what's causing all this?"

Kane nodded, not missing a beat. "The mutations spread from one central point, like veins from a heart. If we reach it, we might stand a chance of stopping it."

"And why are you helping us?" Rick asked, his voice tinged with suspicion.

Kane's gaze flicked to Rick, his expression unreadable. "Maybe I just don't like seeing the world twisted into something it was never meant to be."

The group fell silent as they navigated the increasingly alien terrain. The trees loomed overhead, their branches warped and twisted. Strange fungal growths pulsed along the roots, casting an eerie glow. The ground itself seemed alive, shifting and writhing as if something monstrous lay just beneath the surface.

---

POV: Jenna

Jenna could feel the energy intensifying with every step, a pulsing rhythm that resonated through the ground and up into her bones. It was strange—this wasn't just any mutation. Whatever it was, it felt almost… aware. She hadn't felt anything like it since she'd first gained her own powers.

"This place is… different," she murmured, more to herself than anyone else.

Carl nodded beside her, his hand never straying far from his weapon. "Be ready. Whatever's causing this mutation, it's bound to be well-protected."

Jenna's gaze drifted to the humans, watching as they struggled to keep up. She felt a flicker of something unfamiliar—a memory, maybe—of how she'd once been like them. Vulnerable. But she shoved the feeling down, reminding herself of her purpose. She wasn't here to protect them. She was here for answers.

Ahead, Kane moved with purpose, his every step confident, as if he knew exactly where he was going. Jenna narrowed her eyes. She didn't trust him, not yet. But if he could lead them to the source of this mutation, she was willing to follow—at least for now.

---

POV: Kane

Kane could feel the suspicion in the group's eyes, especially from the zombies. He didn't blame them—trust was hard to come by these days. But he was here for a reason, and he wouldn't let doubt stand in his way.

"This is it," he said, his voice low but firm as they approached a clearing. The trees parted to reveal an open space, and in the center, nestled among twisted roots and massive mushrooms, lay a stone, pulsating with a sickly green glow. The ground around it was cracked, and thick, dark roots seemed to emerge from its base, spreading outward in all directions.

Sarah took a step back, her face pale. "Is that…?"

Kane nodded. "The core. The heart of the mutation."

Jenna's eyes gleamed with curiosity, even as a low growl rumbled in her throat. She stepped forward, but Kane held out a hand, stopping her. "Careful. It's not just any stone. That thing is alive."

Jenna scoffed. "Alive? It's a rock."

But before she could take another step, the ground beneath them shuddered. The roots coiled and twisted, and a low hum filled the air—a sound that felt like it was resonating inside their very bones.

"The core has defenses," Kane warned, his tone grave. "Once we start, there's no going back."

---

POV: Carl

Carl gripped his weapon tightly, his gaze locked on the stone. He could feel the energy radiating from it, dark and unnatural. He had no idea what they were about to face, but he knew it wasn't going to be easy.

"Everyone ready?" he asked, his voice steady despite the tension in the air.

The humans exchanged nervous glances, and Jenna's zombie gang growled softly, their eyes locked on the stone. It was as if they sensed the danger, even if they couldn't fully understand it.

Kane nodded, his expression somber. "This is our only chance to stop it."

Carl took a deep breath, bracing himself as he stepped forward. "Then let's do this."

---

POV: Sarah

The moment they moved toward the stone, the forest came alive. Vines shot out from the ground, writhing like snakes as they lashed out at the intruders. Sarah swung her weapon, barely managing to deflect one of the vines as it lunged at her.

"We're under attack!" she shouted, her voice strained as she fought to keep the vines at bay.

Kane stepped forward, his movements calm and controlled as he slashed through the vines. "Focus on the core! If we destroy it, the rest of the forest will fall."

Jenna's zombie gang surged forward, their growls echoing through the clearing as they tore into the vines. But for every vine they cut down, two more took its place, and the ground itself seemed to pulse with anger.

Sarah's heart pounded as she swung her weapon again, barely keeping the vines from wrapping around her legs. She could see Jenna and Carl battling beside her, their expressions fierce as they fought to reach the stone.

But even as they pressed forward, she couldn't shake the feeling that they were outmatched. The forest was fighting back, with a strength and fury that felt almost… intelligent.

"Keep going!" Kane shouted, his voice cutting through the chaos. "We're almost there!"

With a final surge of determination, the group pushed forward, their movements fueled by desperation and fear. But as they closed in on the core, Sarah couldn't help but wonder—would they make it out alive?
