Chapter 71 - Wrath of the Core

The air was thick with tension, a strange, palpable energy that seemed to radiate from the core stone. Carl kept his stance steady as they closed in on the pulsating stone, but he could feel the resistance. Vines lashed out from the ground, each strike more aggressive than the last, as if the forest itself sensed their intentions.

Beside him, Jenna was fighting with an intensity he hadn't seen in her before. Her zombie gang tore through the vines, but for every vine they cut down, two more took its place. The forest wasn't giving up without a fight.

"This is insane!" she growled, slashing at a particularly thick vine. "It's like the forest has a mind of its own!"

Carl spared her a grim glance. "It does—or at least, the core does. That stone isn't just a rock. It's alive."

Jenna let out a frustrated snarl. "Great, so we're fighting an angry, sentient forest. Just what I needed."

Carl fought back a smirk despite the chaos. "Focus. We have to destroy it. That's the only way to stop this mutation."

They pressed forward, inching closer to the stone, but the vines only became more aggressive. It was as though the core sensed their intent, its defenses intensifying with every step they took.

POV: Sarah

Sarah was struggling to keep up. Every time she hacked through one vine, another took its place. The relentless assault was draining her strength, and her arms ached with each swing of her weapon. But she pushed on, determined to reach the core.

Beside her, Kane moved with an almost unnatural grace, his blade slicing through the vines with practiced precision. He didn't seem fazed by the forest's defenses, his expression calm and focused as he cut a path through the chaos.

"We're almost there," he said, his voice steady despite the mayhem around them. "Stay close."

Sarah didn't respond, too busy fighting off another vine. But even as she struggled, she couldn't help but wonder about Kane's motives. He had led them here, but why? What did he stand to gain from all this?

As if sensing her thoughts, Kane glanced over at her, his gaze unreadable. "Keep your focus. We're not out of this yet."

Sarah forced herself to push her doubts aside, concentrating on the task at hand. They could question Kane's motives later—if they survived.

---

POV: Kane

Kane watched as the group fought their way toward the core, his eyes flickering with a strange intensity. He knew they were close—he could feel the energy radiating from the stone, a powerful force that was unlike anything he'd encountered before.

But he also knew that destroying it wouldn't be easy. The core was ancient, its roots deep and its power vast. They'd have to strike with precision if they wanted to sever its hold on the forest.

He glanced at Carl and Jenna, noting their determination, and a faint smile played at the corner of his lips. They were stronger than he'd expected.

"Focus on the roots," he called out, his voice cutting through the noise. "The stone is protected, but if we can sever the roots, it'll weaken."

Carl nodded, his expression grim as he hacked at the thick roots surrounding the stone. Jenna followed suit, her movements fierce and unrelenting as she tore into the forest's defenses.

But even as they fought, Kane could sense the core's anger. It wasn't just defending itself—it was retaliating.

The ground shook beneath their feet, and thick, dark roots erupted from the earth, lashing out with a newfound fury. Kane gritted his teeth, raising his blade to deflect the onslaught, but he knew they were running out of time.

"We have to end this now," he muttered, his gaze fixed on the pulsating stone.

---

POV: Jenna

Jenna's arms ached, but she pushed through, determined to reach the core. She could feel the energy radiating from the stone, an overwhelming force that made her feel both exhilarated and terrified.

"Almost there!" she shouted, glancing back at her zombie gang. They were holding their own, their growls echoing through the clearing as they tore into the vines.

But as she stepped closer, the core stone pulsed, sending a shockwave through the ground. Jenna stumbled, her vision blurring as the force of the energy hit her like a physical blow.

"Jenna!" Carl's voice cut through the haze, steadying her.

She shook her head, regaining her balance, and glared at the stone. "This thing's got some serious defenses."

Carl nodded, his gaze steely. "But it's weakening. Keep going."

With a growl of determination, Jenna charged forward, her weapon raised as she struck at the nearest root. The impact sent a shockwave through her arms, but she didn't stop. She hacked at the root with everything she had, chipping away at the core's defenses.

But just as she felt they were making progress, the stone pulsed again, brighter and more intense than before. Jenna stumbled back, shielding her eyes from the blinding light.

When she looked up, the stone's glow had intensified, its energy radiating outward in waves. The core was fighting back with everything it had.

"We're running out of time!" she shouted, her voice barely audible over the roar of the energy.

---

POV: Sarah

Sarah watched in horror as the stone's energy surged, the pulsating light casting eerie shadows across the clearing. She could feel the heat radiating from the core, a suffocating force that made it hard to breathe.

"We can't get close!" she gasped, shielding her face from the light.

Kane's voice was calm but urgent. "Then we strike from a distance. Target the roots. If we weaken the foundation, the stone will fall."

Sarah nodded, raising her weapon as she aimed for one of the thick, pulsing roots. With a surge of determination, she swung her weapon, the impact sending a shudder through her arms.

The root cracked, a dark, oozing liquid spilling from the wound. But even as they attacked, the stone's energy grew stronger, its defenses intensifying with every blow.

Sarah gritted her teeth, refusing to give up. They had come too far to fail now.

---

POV: Carl

Carl knew they were close. He could feel the core weakening, its energy faltering as they hacked away at the roots. But he also knew they were running out of time. The core's defenses were growing stronger, each wave of energy more intense than the last.

"Jenna, Sarah—focus on the roots!" he shouted, his voice strained as he struck at another root.

Jenna nodded, her movements fierce as she tore into the forest's defenses. Sarah followed suit, her face set with determination as she swung her weapon.

The core stone pulsed one last time, its glow flickering, and Carl knew they had done it. The roots began to wither, their dark energy fading as the core weakened.

With a final surge of strength, Carl raised his weapon and struck at the heart of the stone. The impact sent a shockwave through the clearing, and the stone shattered, its energy dissipating into the air.

For a moment, there was silence. The forest stilled, the vines retracting as the core's power faded.

They had done it.
