You know those nights when it's cold, and lonely, and boring, and long, and you're just lying there alone on your bed with that strong desire to cuddle someone, that natural urge to feel a warm body next to you. Those lonely night/day when reading your favorite book doesn't seem to be working, when nothing seems to be catching your interest on Facebook, watching a movie isn't making any sense either, you just want to touch, you just want to feel someone beside you.
You keep rolling from one side of the bed to the other but the urge still doesn't go away. At that moment reading your Bible is obviously the last thing on your mind, and even when you try to read a scripture it looks like you're reading a physics textbook, nothing sinks in. The only thing running through your mind at the moment is who do I call?
Uncle starts thinking " who is most likely to get here quickly?"
Aunty starts thinking "who is most likely to invite me over to his place/hotelroom, who stays close?
The URGE!
It just wants to find expression.
And do you know something else we do at those moments? We become very honest with ourselves...
Uncle says " I don't really want to have sex though, I just want someone I can hold tight, you know, watch a movie together, lay on her legs and just fall asleep"
Aunty says "it is not like i'm going there to have sex, I just want to go and chill with Pete."
Hmmmm, we both know how that 'chilling' will go, we both know where our hands will be five minutes into the movie, we both know that no one can 'fall asleep' easily in that position, we both know, right?
The URGE!
Next thing we start scrolling through the contacts on our phone looking for a familiar ex or an old faithful we can sweet talk to come over, someone we have 'moved on' but we haven't fully 'moved away' from. Someone that is most likely to come over on short notice, the backup plan, the happy hour.
Uncle starts scrolling through his phone carefully, one contact after the other..
Sandra - too stubborn, she won't come.
Anthonia - left town, serving in Abuja now.
Onyinye - hmm, she's around, let me try.
So we try to persuade an old faithful with different tricks;
It's still early to come over, no traffic today.
You don't have to worry, I'll send you a cab.
I can come over and pick you up if you want.
I won't touch you, I promise.
It's just 9pm, it's safe.
... Soooo many convincing tricks.
The URGE!
The struggle is real. Some of us have been here before, a lot of times. Struggled with the high emotions, and the urge, and the temptation to make that call and hookup with that old faithful, we all know how it usually ends, right back in sin, right back where God found us. We all need God at the time the "urges" are high... we also need to delete the numbers that make us go back easily...
If you're still stuck here, struggling with the urges, I want you to try and fight it, yes you can, those moment when you're high on emotions say a simple prayer and ask God for grace, the reason why the urges are overwhelming you is because you are fighting it alone, ask God for Help. Even the strongest of us need reinforcements at these times, it doesn't have to be a prayer marathon, a one line prayer is enough if it is sincere, say "Lord, you know that these urges are natural, and I know that I need help to get through this, help me take control over my flesh, Amen."
You can breakthrough the urge, yes you can.
