A Fortress in the Mist (Chrono-Realm)
It's early morning, and the ruined fortress sits in a thick mist. The cold stone walls still bear the marks of disrepair, but some areas are newly patched from the work Aiden did in the previous episode. The trees beyond the walls sway gently as the light fog begins to clear.
Aiden stands in the courtyard, looking over a rough blueprint for further upgrades to the base. His mind is racing, trying to calculate the best strategy for survival and expansion.
Aiden (thinking):
"So I need more resources, stronger defenses, and, most importantly, more people. I can't keep doing everything myself."
A few NPC villagers wander past, sluggishly going about their duties. They look exhausted, their eyes hollow from years of defending the crumbling fortress with minimal support. Aiden notices this and frowns.
Aiden (to himself):
"If I don't improve morale soon, we'll all be overrun. But these people won't follow me just because I've patched a few walls. I need to prove I can lead them."
A voice from behind breaks Aiden's thoughts.
Old Man (NPC):
"Keeper! There's been sightings of the goblin raiders again. This time, they've been stealing supplies from the caravans passing through the forest. We're running out of food!"
The old man hobbles toward Aiden, a worried look on his face. His hands shake slightly as he hands Aiden a crude map, marked with the caravan routes and the locations of recent attacks.
Old Man:
"If you don't do something soon, this base will starve. We need those caravans."
Aiden (nodding):
"Got it old man. Don't worry and Leave it to me."
The First Quest (Preparation)
Aiden heads toward the armoury, which is little more than a small shack filled with rusted weapons and old shields. As he picks through the limited selection, his game menu appears in front of him again, showing a new quest prompt.
[QUEST RECEIVED: Goblin Raiders]
•Objective: Investigate the goblin raiders' hideout and recover stolen supplies.
•Reward: 100 Stone, 50 Wood, 10 Villager Morale
•Difficulty: Easy (Recommended Level: 2)
Aiden (grinning):
"Looks like my first quest in this world. Just like the old days when I got my first advanced VR set."
He selects a half-decent sword and a small wooden shield from the armoury, feeling their weight in his hands. It's not much, but it will have to do.
Suddenly, he hears footsteps behind him. Lina, a young blonde village NPC girl with hazel eyes (looks like she came from a Noble family) who works as a scout for the base, walks up. She looks at Aiden with a mix of curiosity and skepticism.
Lina:
"You're really going after the goblins by yourself, Keeper? No offense, but the last few guys who tried didn't come back."
Aiden (calmly):
"That's because they didn't know what they were doing. I do."
Aiden (thinking)
"Huh! These stupid NCPs don't seem to understand what they say. I guess this is part of the script so I have to cope with it."
Lina raises an eyebrow, clearly unsure.
Lina:
"If you say so. Still, it's not just goblins. Some of the raiders are being led by something bigger—rumour is there's a Hobgoblin leading them. Stronger, smarter. You sure you're ready for that?"
Aiden pauses, his mind already strategizing. He knows a Hobgoblin is a low-level boss in the game.Although it's too much for him right now to even consider defeating it, but beatable if he plays his cards right.
Aiden (smirking):
"I'm ready. Besides, this fortress won't survive if I don't start taking risks."
Lina crosses her arms, still unsure.
Lina:
"If you say so. Just… come back alive, alright?"
Into the Forest (The Goblin Raid Hideout)
Aiden makes his way through the Verdantwood Forest, the dense trees casting long shadows as he follows the map toward the goblin raiders' hideout. The sounds of the forest are alive around him—birds chirping, the rustling of leaves, but also the distant growls of beasts.
Aiden (thinking):
"It's so real. This feels nothing like a game anymore. I can even smell the forest… crazy."
He checks his map again and notices he's nearing the location marked for the goblin attacks. A sudden rustling in the bushes makes him freeze. He tightens his grip on the sword and looks around cautiously.
Suddenly, three goblins leap out from the underbrush, snarling and brandishing crude weapons. Their small, wiry bodies move fast, but Aiden's reflexes, honed from years of gaming, kick in.
Aiden (whispering):
"Let's see what you've got filthy bastards!"
The first goblin lunges at him, but Aiden sidesteps and slashes across its chest with a swift strike. The goblin lets out a screech as it falls to the ground. The other two attack simultaneously, but Aiden blocks with his shield, knocking one back before plunging his sword into the other.
The fight is over in seconds, and Aiden stands over the fallen goblins, barely out of breath.
Aiden (smirking):
"That was almost too easy."
Just as he finishes, his Time Distortion ability pulses in the corner of his vision, ready to be activated again.
Aiden (thinking):
"I'll save it for the Hobgoblin. No need to waste it here."
The Hobgoblin Leader
Aiden continues deeper into the forest, eventually coming across a goblin encampment. The camp is crude, with tents made from animal skins and makeshift barricades. At the centre, Aiden sees a massive, hulking Hobgoblin sitting on a crude wooden throne. Around it, smaller goblins scramble, guarding piles of stolen supplies.
Aiden (thinking):
"There he is. That's my target."
He crouches low, observing the camp. There are at least a dozen goblins, plus the Hobgoblin. Rushing in would be suicide. He looks around, searching for something to give him an advantage.
His eyes land on a stack of wooden crates near the edge of the camp. A plan forms in his mind.
Aiden (whispering):
"Time to put those game mechanics to work."
He sneaks around the edge of the camp, moving silently through the bushes. When he's in position, he activates Build Mode. The familiar interface appears, and he selects Place Trap.
[Build Mode: Place Trap - Tripwire]
•Cost: 50 Stone
Aiden places a tripwire between two trees, just as the goblins start moving toward the stolen supplies. He watches as the first few goblins stumble over the tripwire, falling onto the ground and alerting the others.
Aiden (grinning):
"Showtime."
He charges into the camp, taking advantage of the goblins' momentary confusion. His sword flashes as he cuts down the first two goblins before they even realize what's happening. The Hobgoblin roars, standing up and grabbing a massive club.
Hobgoblin (roaring):
"RAAARGH!"
The remaining goblins swarm toward Aiden, but he's ready. As they close in, he activates Time Distortion - Slow. The world around him slows to a crawl, the goblins' movements sluggish and predictable.
Aiden (thinking):
"Now's my chance."
He weaves through the slowed goblins, striking them down one by one with precise, calculated blows. By the time time returns to normal, most of the goblins are already on the ground, dead or dying.
The Hobgoblin, however, remains standing. It swings its massive club toward Aiden, but he dodges, rolling to the side and slashing at its leg. The Hobgoblin roars in pain, but it's far from defeated.
Aiden (thinking):
"This thing's tough. Gonna need more than brute strength."
He notices the crates nearby—the ones filled with flammable materials from the caravans. An idea strikes him. He dodges another swing from the Hobgoblin and runs toward the crates.
Aiden (yelling):
"Come and get me, you oversized brute!"
The Hobgoblin charges after him, but as it gets close, Aiden kicks one of the crates toward the creature and swings his sword at it, creating sparks. The crate explodes, engulfing the Hobgoblin in flames. The beast howls in agony as the fire consumes it, thrashing wildly before collapsing to the ground.
Aiden stands over the burning Hobgoblin, breathing heavily, but with a satisfied smile on his face.
Aiden (grinning):
"Still got it."
Returning to the Base
Aiden returns to the fortress as the sun sets, carrying the recovered supplies on a makeshift cart. The villagers cheer as he enters through the gates, their morale visibly lifted.
The old man from before approaches, smiling for the first time in ages.
Old Man:
"You did it, Keeper. You really did it."
Aiden (nodding):
"That's just the start Garret. We're going to rebuild this place. But I'll need everyone's help."
Garret (Old Man):
"You have it. We'll follow you, Keeper. You've given us hope."
As Aiden looks around at the cheering villagers, a new notification appears in his interface.
[QUEST COMPLETE: Goblin Raiders]
•Reward: 100 Stone, 50 Wood, 10 Villager Morale
•New Quest Unlocked: The Timekeeper's Legacy
Aiden's eyes narrow at the new quest title.
Aiden (thinking):
"The Timekeeper's Legacy… this must be connected to that relic I found."
He grips the Timekeeper's Shard in his pocket, a determined look in his eyes.
Aiden:
"This world has no idea what's coming."
