Obelia was one of the last people to be called to wear the Sorting Hat, and as she was waiting her mind drifted off.
'What if the hat has lice? Has it ever been washed? Can that even be cleaned?' Obelia thought for a few more seconds before having her name called out.
"Obelia Wever!" Obelia quickly made her way and sat in the uncomfortable chair. 'This is kinda embarrassing' Obelia thought, before getting interrupted by whispers.
"I heard her family is full of criminals," One said, and another followed, "I heard they sell illegal artifacts to dark wizards," and another, "I heard they're not strong but good at running."
Obelia knew her family was a bunch of criminals, but she wasn't. She could create artifacts but she had never sold any! Obelia liked to think she was an innocent bystander, however, that didn't stop others from thinking differently.
Obelia sat there uncomfortably looking at McGonagall who was taking longer than usual to place the hat on her head, and noticed she seemed distracted.
"Is something…wrong?" Obelia asked before McGonagall snapped out of her trance and smiled, "Nothing at all."
The hat only touched her hair and it was already decided what house she would join… "SLYTHERIN!" The Sorting Hat's voice echoed into the hall, but a voice broke the silence.
"I want a second opinion!" Obelia quickly got up, her voice was not as loud as the Sorting Hat however everyone could hear it.
"A… second opinion?" McGonagall asked in a confused voice. She had never heard of such a thing, people are usually happy with what house they end up in.
"There is no need, a family filled with criminals, will naturally raise one." Obelia turned and saw the Head of Slytherin, Professor Snape speak.
"Wouldn't that make you a criminal as well? I mean you did-" Before Obelia was about to finish her sentence, the Sorting Hat suddenly spoke.
"You have decent qualities, you're as smart as a Ravenclaw, as brave as a Gryffindor, as loyal as a Hufflepuff, but you're cunning, a trickster, and someone who thinks they are better than everyone else."
Obelia looked at the Sorting Hat and glared, "…Fine." Obelia sighed in defeat, she didn't think what the Sorting Hat and Snape said was true, but she couldn't just argue with Snape and the Sorting Hat. She made her way to Slytherin and sat next to Draco, "Let's get along," she said with a smile, but it wasn't the friendliest, it was a warning.
___
Draco and Obelia made their way out of the Great Hall and followed the Prefects to their lounge.
Draco looked at Obelia who was walking in front of him and started to stare. He managed to pick up on a few things since meeting on Hogwarts Express. The first was she wasn't the brightest, as she would bump
Into things very often, especially walls. The second was that she didn't seem to care about anything like the world would pass by with or without her. The third was how she acted like a ghost, wandering around calm with a stoic face, however when you interacted with her she would give a smile and chat, like a switch came on.
Draco was woken from his thoughts when he had to grab Obelia's hood to prevent her from crashing into another Slytherin. 'It feels like I'm babysitting, I thought Father gave me an easy task…' Draco quickly shook that thought off and entered the common room with Obelia.
"Hey Obelia, I have some questions I would like to ask you," Draco said before pulling out his quill and notepad, "What's your favorite color? What do you like? What do you hate? Would you consider yourself strong?" Draco quickly let out a string of questions and Obelia just watched and waited.
"I like pink and dark green, but any color is good. I like sweets, money, Jewelry, sleep, and anything shiny or cute. I hate school, learning, loud noises, and people, especially when they expect things from me. It depends, physically I'm pretty weak, and my magic isn't the best, but I'm confident in my ability to get away, it's what the Wever family specializes in after all." Obelia said, she also spoke in a string of words, however, they were
much calmer and she smiled satisfied with the answers she had given.
Draco quickly noted everything she said down and nodded. 'I think Father will be very happy with the information I just received.' He smiled and thought about the congratulations his father might give to him.
"Wait… what do you mean they specialize in getting away?" Draco said, tilting his head and looking at Obelia who was walking a large painting. His father had told him the Wever family specializes in artifacts and magic devices.
"Mmmm… you said you heard about my family, correct? They haven't been caught because we get away quickly, it's hard to put into words," Obelia thought for a moment and pulled Draco aside and near a corner. "Try and hug me," Obelia said, while Draco didn't exactly want to try he was curious as to what she was trying to demonstrate and went for it.
Draco was about to hug Obelia but passed through her instead. Like a ghost who could not be touched, Draco tried to reach for her again but Obelia couldn't be grabbed.
"The Wever family also specializes in tricks to deceive the eye, but I'm not foolish enough to show you that," Obelia said before she smiled. "We might be known for artifacts but that's not the only thing up our sleeve, it's kinda stupid how everyone thinks that."
Obelia let out a chuckle before turning, "I'm going to my room, see you tomorrow I suppose?" Obelia said, before leaving the common room and entering her room.
Draco didn't however, his next targets were Goyler and Crabbe. "Listen, if you see Obelia getting picked on or doing something dangerous tell me," Draco said, but Goyler and Crabbe could only look at him confused.
"…Why?" Goyler said, he had never seen Draco so serious, for a second he thought Draco would burn holes in the notepad he was starting at.
"It's the Wever family's only child, do you know how useful that would be for us?" Draco said before looking at Goyler and Crabbe.
They both turned to look at each other in confusion, and thought the same thing, 'yeah, but why are you so serious?'
___
Obelia looked at her two other roommates, usually, it would be 5 people in a dorm room, however, there were only 2 more people in the room besides her.
"Hello, my name is Pansy Parkinson." She spoke in a proud tone, raising her head."Hello, my name is Daphne Greengrass." The other followed, although giving a cold look at Obelia.
'…What a bitch, I just walked in.' Obelia thought before going to one of the top beds and looking down at them.
"Hello, my name is Obelia Wever, but I'm sure y'all already knew that," she spoke in a strong accent contrasting both of the other girls and took the cat, Eno, out of her pocket and placed him on the bed.
Daphne and Pansy both looked up and her and glanced at each other, 'Shouldn't she be unpacking?' They both thought but decided not to say anything and unpack.
Obelia looked at the small candle flickering in the room and closed her eyes. 'My first year at Hogwarts, I finally have a place to return to for 7 years, before have to leave…' She thought, before letting out a deep sigh.
'Before they find out I'm a squib…'
