Chapter 132 - Ch 134: Crossing the Divide - Part 2

The narrow paths of the Glassford Mountains grew steeper, and the air colder, but Onyx trudged forward with unwavering strength. The massive bull, his black fur dusted with frost, seemed almost impervious to the elements.

"You're an incredible beast, you know that?" Kalem murmured, patting Onyx's flank as they paused by a frozen stream. Onyx snorted, his breath forming clouds in the icy air, and nudged Kalem's shoulder as if acknowledging the compliment.

Lyra chuckled as she unpacked a small kettle to melt snow for water. "I'm starting to think Onyx is the most capable one in this group. He hasn't stumbled once."

"Probably because he's smarter than he looks," Kalem replied with a grin. "And I've got to say, I wouldn't have made it this far without him."

As they continued up the path, Onyx's calm demeanor proved invaluable. When a sudden gust of wind nearly knocked Lyra off her feet, Onyx braced himself and steadied the cart. When the trail narrowed to a hair's breadth along a cliffside, he moved carefully, ensuring the cart's wheels stayed on stable ground.

It was Onyx who alerted them to the next danger. His ears perked up, and he let out a low, rumbling bellow, his gaze fixed on a cluster of jagged rocks ahead.

"What is it, boy?" Kalem asked, tightening his grip on Onyx's reins.

Before Lyra could reply, a faint shimmer appeared in the air above the rocks. Slowly, a translucent figure emerged—a creature resembling a stag, but with antlers that glowed like molten gold and eyes that shimmered with an inner light.

"Is that... a magic construct?" Lyra whispered, her voice trembling with both fear and wonder.

The stag tilted its head, its gaze locked on Onyx. For a moment, it seemed as though the two creatures were communicating silently. Then, with a graceful leap, the stag bounded into the air, its form dissolving into a cascade of golden light.

"What just happened?" Kalem asked, his voice hushed.

Lyra shook her head, still staring at the spot where the stag had disappeared. "I don't know, but it felt... like a blessing."

Onyx let out a satisfied huff and continued forward, his steps even more confident than before.

Later that day, as they navigated a rocky incline, disaster struck. A section of the path crumbled beneath the cart's rear wheel, sending it teetering dangerously close to the edge.

"Hold it, Onyx!" Kalem shouted, rushing to the bull's side.

Onyx braced himself, planting his massive hooves firmly into the ground. His muscles strained as he held the cart steady, preventing it from tipping over entirely.

"Lyra, grab the ropes from the side of the cart!" Kalem barked.

Lyra scrambled to comply, tossing the ropes to Kalem, who quickly secured them around the cart and anchored them to nearby rocks. Together, they worked to stabilize the load, their breaths visible in the cold air as they struggled against gravity.

With a final heave, Onyx pulled the cart back onto solid ground, letting out a triumphant bellow.

"You absolute legend!" Kalem exclaimed, throwing his arms around the bull's neck. "I owe you one, big guy."

Lyra slumped against a boulder, her face pale but smiling. "Remind me to never underestimate him again."

As they set up camp that evening, Kalem couldn't help but marvel at Onyx's uncanny instincts. The bull seemed to sense danger before it appeared, whether it was a loose rock, a sudden storm, or a lurking predator.

"You know," Lyra said, stirring a pot of stew over the fire, "I've read about animals attuned to magic. Some say they can sense things humans can't, like shifts in the environment or even the presence of magical energy."

Kalem glanced at Onyx, who was lying contentedly near the cart, chewing on a bundle of dried grass. "You think Onyx is one of those animals?"

Lyra shrugged. "It's possible. He's no ordinary bull, that's for sure."

Kalem chuckled, reaching out to scratch Onyx behind the ear. "Well, whatever he is, I'm glad he's on our side."

Onyx let out a low, pleased rumble and nuzzled Kalem's hand, as if to say he felt the same.

The next morning, as they prepared to move on, Kalem took a moment to adjust the straps on Onyx's harness.

"You know, I used to think of you as just a beast of burden," Kalem said softly. "But now... I think you're more than that. You're a partner. A friend."

Onyx tilted his head, his large, intelligent eyes meeting Kalem's. Then he let out a deep, contented sigh and lowered his head, allowing Kalem to pat him on the forehead.

Lyra watched the exchange with a smile. "If nothing else, Arcathis will be impressed by the bond you two share. That's something even magic can't replicate."

Kalem nodded, a sense of warmth spreading through him despite the cold. With Onyx by his side, he felt ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.

As they continued their journey, the Glassford Mountains began to give way to gentler slopes, and the magical phenomena grew more frequent. But no matter what they encountered, Kalem knew one thing for certain: he wasn't alone.
