The deeper Kalem, Lyra, and Onyx ventured into the Glassford Mountains, the stranger the landscape became. The jagged peaks began to shimmer faintly, as though infused with an otherworldly glow. Streams of liquid light trickled down the cliffs, pooling in glowing basins that pulsed softly with energy.
"What is this place?" Lyra asked, her voice barely above a whisper. She knelt by one of the glowing pools, carefully scooping a small vial of the liquid. "It's like the magic here is... alive."
"Whatever it is, it's unsettling," Kalem replied, his eyes scanning their surroundings. "Feels like we're being watched."
Onyx let out a low grunt, his ears twitching as he sniffed the air. His movements were cautious, his massive hooves stepping deliberately on the uneven ground.
As they rounded a bend, the path widened into a flat plateau. In the center stood an enormous stone archway, its surface etched with runes that glowed faintly in the dim light. Standing before the arch was a creature unlike anything they had seen—a massive feline with sleek, dark fur that shimmered like liquid silver. Its piercing violet eyes locked onto the group as they approached.
"Uh... Kalem?" Lyra whispered, clutching her satchel tightly.
"Stay calm," Kalem replied, gripping his spear. "We don't know if it's hostile yet."
The feline prowled closer, its movements fluid and graceful. It let out a deep, resonant growl that seemed to vibrate through the air, and the runes on the archway flared brighter.
"I think it's guarding the pass," Lyra said, her voice tense. "Maybe we're trespassing."
"Or maybe it's testing us," Kalem suggested, stepping forward cautiously. He held his spear loosely at his side, not wanting to appear threatening. "We don't mean any harm," he said, his voice steady. "We're just passing through."
The feline stopped a few paces away, its gaze shifting between Kalem, Lyra, and Onyx. It let out a low rumble and pawed at the ground, its claws leaving glowing scratches on the stone.
"I don't think it cares about words," Lyra muttered.
The feline suddenly lunged, its powerful form leaping toward Kalem. He rolled to the side, narrowly avoiding its razor-sharp claws. Onyx let out a bellow and stomped his hooves, but the creature ignored him, focusing solely on Kalem.
"Looks like it wants a fight!" Kalem called, raising his spear.
Lyra scrambled to the edge of the plateau, fumbling with her vials. "I'll try to come up with something, just don't get yourself killed!"
The battle was unlike anything Kalem had faced before. The feline was fast—almost impossibly so—and its movements were precise and calculated. Each time it struck, it seemed to anticipate his dodges, forcing him to stay on the defensive.
Realizing he couldn't outmatch it with speed alone, Kalem shifted tactics. He used the terrain to his advantage, weaving between boulders and using his spear to vault over obstacles. The feline followed, its glowing claws carving through stone as it pursued him.
Finally, Kalem spotted an opening. As the creature lunged again, he thrust his spear forward, aiming for the glowing runes on its chest. The spear struck true, and the creature let out a deafening roar, its body erupting in a burst of light.
When the light faded, the feline was gone. In its place lay a small, glowing crystal, pulsating softly with energy.
Kalem picked up the crystal, its warmth spreading through his hand. As he turned back toward the archway, the runes on its surface began to shift and rearrange, forming a new pattern. A low hum filled the air, and the archway glowed brighter, its center transforming into a shimmering portal.
"I guess that means we passed," Kalem said, turning to Lyra.
Lyra, who had been watching with wide eyes, finally exhaled. "That was... incredible. Are you okay?"
"Yeah, just a little winded," Kalem replied, brushing off his tunic. "What about you, Onyx?"
The bull snorted, shaking his head as if to say, "Of course I'm fine."
Lyra stepped closer to the portal, her gaze filled with wonder. "This must be one of the old magic gates. They're supposed to be relics from the time when mages ruled this region."
"Well, it's our way forward now," Kalem said, gripping the crystal tightly.
As they prepared to step through the portal, Kalem hesitated. He turned back to look at the plateau, the glowing streams of magic, and the jagged peaks of the Glassford Mountains.
"We're really leaving the wilderness behind," he murmured.
Lyra placed a hand on his shoulder. "And stepping into something much bigger. Are you ready?"
Kalem glanced at Onyx, who stood beside him with unwavering calm. He took a deep breath and nodded. "Let's go."
With that, the three of them stepped through the portal, the light enveloping them as they crossed into a new chapter of their journey.
