Chapter 21 - Lost Among the Stones

Olivia watched the quiet streets through the car window, where shop owners were just beginning to unlock their doors. The early morning light hinted at the approaching dawn, casting a soft glow over the storefronts and sidewalks as they passed by.

Mia, leaning against Olivia's shoulder, slept soundly, a gentle snore escaping her every now and then. Olivia couldn't help but chuckle quietly

She felt a wave of exhaustion herself, the night's chaotic events tugging at her eyelids, but she remained alert, determined to stay awake until they arrived home.

Her mind raced with wary thoughts; she couldn't shake the lingering paranoia that they might end up somewhere far from their apartment.

They might end up to some cold, abandoned warehouse, perhaps, or worse, strapped to a surgical table for "inspection" by the organization.

Where they opened her and Mia to check if they are human or some sort of in disguise monster.

The idea sent a shiver down her spine. After what they'd encountered tonight, she couldn't entirely rule out the possibility that monsters who could take on human forms might be real. Olivia's grip tightened, grounding herself as her mind fought off the wave of fatigue.

Olivia keep herself calm down and that thought make her tired mind a awaken a bit.

Her eyes drifted toward the driver, a man in a protective vest marked with an emblem she didn't recognize, a cross encircling the letters "PDC." The symbol, simple yet austere, carried a strange sense of authority.

The logo had an air of mystery and authority, hinting at the organization that likely dealt with the very threats Olivia was anxious about. She felt a mix of curiosity and unease.

She wondered if this person was more than just a driver. Was he also a part of this shadowy organization, someone tasked with protecting people from the monsters that had shattered her sense of normalcy?

The cross symbol on his vest suggested he was someone who faced danger regularly, perhaps someone tasked with protecting them from the very monsters that haunted her thoughts. She sighed softly, wishing she could shake off the fear and just focus on getting home.

Just then, the driver's gaze met hers in the rearview mirror. Sensing her guarded tension, he gave a slight nod, a silent reassurance.

Moments later, the car radio crackled to life. A cheerful host announced the dawn of a new day.

She heard the host says " Good morning, everyone! I hope you're all having a fantastic day so far. It looks like we're in for a treat today, with no rain in sight and the sun about to rise, lighting up our skies. So let's soak in this beautiful morning vibe! Now, let me share this song with you..Lost Among the Stones"

Suddenly, she noticed that the driver turning up the volume a bit where they can hear it fully without having Mia waking onto it.

The driver gave slight nod, as if a subtle recognition of the song's familiar tune. "Lost Among the Stones" was an old classic, one that had echoed through their lives in different moments.

She knew its melancholy beauty, a song that spoke of loss and remembrance—a connection that felt comforting amidst the chaos.

The music started with a soft piano sounds that felt like a person who's lost in a foggy place. And then a woman's voice sings like she was whispering a lullaby.

The woman's voice, gentle and ethereal, wrapped around her like a comforting blanket. Olivia could almost picture herself wandering through a fog-laden cemetery, surrounded by gravestones that held secrets of the past.

"In the quiet of the twilight, where the shadows lie,

I wander through the echoes of the days gone by.

Each name etched in the granite tells a story of its own,

Whispers of the heartache in a world of stone."

Olivia closed her eyes for a moment, letting the haunting melody wash over her. The soft piano notes floated through the car, weaving a cocoon of calm amidst the tension.

It was as if the music was guiding her thoughts away from the lurking fears and uncertainties that had plagued her since their encounter with the monsters on the cemetery.

"Lost among the stones, where memories roam,

Every tear that falls, finds a place to call home.

In the stillness of the night, under the moon's soft glow,

I search for the faces I used to know."

She felt a pang in her heart, a reminder of their previous normal lives had gone as they got into this strange supernatural world, much like the fleeting moments of her their own lives. It reminded her of the fragility of existence and the weight of the choices that lay ahead.

"With every step I take, I feel the weight of time,

The laughter and the sorrow, a bittersweet rhyme.

Faded flowers at their feet, reminders of the past,

In this sacred garden, their spirits hold fast."

The lyrics resonated with her, bringing forth memories of the challenges they had faced and the uncertainty of what awaited them.

She knew they were on a precarious path, teetering on the edge of something much larger than themselves.

But in this moment, with the soft lullaby wrapping around them, she felt a flicker of hope. Perhaps they could find their way back from the brink.

The driver remained silent, focused on the road, but Olivia caught a glimpse of something in his expression—a shared understanding, a silent acknowledgment of the struggle they were all facing. She glanced at the cross on his vest, the PDC insignia a stark reminder that they weren't alone in this fight against the darkness.

"And though the world keeps turning, I stand still in the haze,

With every whispered secret, I'm lost in their gaze.

I'll carry them with me, like the stars in the sky,

For in my heart they linger, never truly goodbye."

When the last notes faded into silence, Olivia opened her eyes, feeling a renewed sense of determination. She would protect Mia, guide her through the fog, and together they would navigate the shadows, refusing to be lost among the stones.

After the music ends, the car turned to the last corner, Olivia saw the familiar exterior of her apartment building, its cheap, worn facade almost like a comforting embrace.

Relief washed over her as she realized the driver had actually taken them home. She glanced at Mia, still peacefully asleep, and allowed herself a small, exhausted smile.

The car came to a stop, and Olivia exhaled deeply, grateful that the nightmare was behind them, for now.
