The camp was eerily still, as if the trees themselves were holding their breath. Alex leaned against the rough bark of an oak near the outskirts, her eyes scanning the moonlit forest. For days, whispers of unease had crept through the camp. Supplies went missing, strange shapes flickered in the dark, and soldiers reported hearing voices when no one was there.
She stood at the edge of the camp, the chill wind biting through her cloak as she surveyed the shadows beyond. A faint mist curled through the trees, making the forest seem alive, as though it were breathing.
Alex wanted to chalk it up to paranoia after everything they'd endured—but she couldn't. Deep down, she knew better.
Ethan's voice broke the silence. "Still standing guard, Commander?"
