The night crept in, swallowing the fading light of the day and casting long shadows over the house. Jerome stayed close to Ian, her mind still reeling from the wolf's haunting gaze and the unsettling feeling that danger was closing in. Ian had been restless since she told him about the encounter, his sharp instincts fully alert. He hadn't left her side, his protective presence both comforting and stifling.
As the evening wore on, Jerome found herself sitting by the fire, the warmth doing little to calm her nerves. Ian paced the room behind her, his steps heavy, his energy dark and unyielding. She could feel his tension, the storm brewing inside him. The air was thick with unspoken words and an underlying sense of impending chaos.
"Ian," Jerome finally said, breaking the silence. "What's happening? You've been on edge ever since the wolf appeared. I need to know what's going on."
Ian stopped pacing, his back turned to her, shoulders tense. For a moment, he didn't respond, as if weighing his words carefully. When he finally spoke, his voice was low, almost dangerous. "There are forces at work, Jerome. Ones I can't always control. And now, they're after you."
Jerome frowned, feeling a chill run down her spine. "After me? Why? I don't understand."
He turned to face her, his eyes glowing with a feral intensity. "You're more important than you realize. To me, to this pack, to everything I stand for. And that wolf—" His jaw clenched. "It's a sign. A sign that others want what I have."
Jerome swallowed hard, her pulse quickening. "Others?"
"Alphas," Ian growled, stepping closer to her. "Rival packs. They know about you now, Jerome. They know you're mine, and they'll stop at nothing to take you from me."
Jerome's heart raced. The weight of his words pressed down on her, suffocating her with fear and confusion. She had never wanted to be a part of this world, but now, she was entangled in it, caught between Ian's possessiveness and the danger lurking just beyond the pack's borders.
"Ian, what am I supposed to do?" she asked, her voice trembling. "I don't know how to fight this."
He knelt in front of her, his hands gripping her knees as he looked into her eyes, his gaze burning with intensity. "You don't need to fight. I'll protect you. I'll kill anyone who dares to come near you. But you need to trust me, Jerome. You're mine, and I'll never let anyone take you from me."
His words, though meant to reassure her, left her feeling more trapped than ever. Ian's love was suffocating, consuming, and now, the threat of others made it even more dangerous. She didn't want to belong to anyone, yet she was bound to him in ways she couldn't fully comprehend.
"Ian…" Jerome's voice wavered. She wanted to tell him that she needed space, that his obsession was overwhelming her. But before she could speak, Ian's lips crashed against hers, silencing her with a fierce kiss.
His hands gripped her waist, pulling her closer, as if he feared she would slip away from him if he let go. The kiss was rough, possessive, filled with the same intensity that always made her heart race. Jerome kissed him back, but her mind was spinning, torn between her feelings for him and the growing fear of what lay ahead.
When he finally pulled back, his breath hot against her skin, Ian's eyes burned with a dangerous promise. "You're mine, Jerome. Forever. No one will take you away from me. Not even the wolves out there."
Jerome shivered, unsure whether his words were a vow of protection or a warning of the dark path their relationship was heading down.
The night pressed in around them, the shadows outside growing thicker, darker. Somewhere in the distance, a howl echoed through the forest—a chilling reminder that they weren't alone.
"I'll keep you safe," Ian whispered, his grip tightening on her. "I swear it."
Jerome nodded, though her heart felt heavy with uncertainty. She didn't doubt Ian's devotion, but the darkness surrounding them was closing in. And she feared that no matter how much Ian fought to protect her, the danger would find its way to them, one way or another.
The wolf in the shadows wasn't done with her. And soon, Jerome would have to face the truth of what it wanted—and what it meant for her future with Ian.
