This isn't possible. There was no way she was married to him.
Even if this certificate says they are married, wasn't the man in front of her supposed to know otherwise?
Her hands shook as her mind reverted to when Yang Zichen tore their certificate. If she was married to him, then who is married to Yang Zichen?
"I think the misunderstanding has been cleared," Luo Chen studied her face as he spoke. He noticed how worry lines formed on her face, attempting to alter the perfect structure, but such an attempt was futile.
"Well, I…" she raised her eyes and for the first time, she held them. "I am further convinced that this is a misunderstanding." She stated matter of factly.
"You should know that I am not the girl you are to marry. If I am correct, this is the first time we are meeting each other." She stretched her hand, handing back the envelope to him.
In truth, Luo Chen had not met with the girl he was to get married to.
To resist the plan of his mother and grandpa, he asked Jiao Runchu to find a bride for him. His plan was simple: get married to her for a few years to throw her off his family's back.
"Well, the thing is…" his phone rang at that moment, interrupting him.
He moved to the side, one hand stuck into his pocket as he spoke into the phone in a hushed voice while staring out into the busy city.
"Sir, I'm sorry, but the girl has suddenly been held down by a fever; she won't be able to be with you at the registry." Luo Chen closed his eyes and opened them, trying to contain whatever emotion he felt at the news.
"And you are just telling me that?" he spoke between clenched teeth, keeping his voice as low as he could be. He could feel her eyes on him so he had to pretend everything was in order.
Jiao Runchu, on the other end, could feel that Luo Chen was dissatisfied. He scratched the back of his head.
He had made sure that he picked the best lady; Luo Chen didn't care about looks since the marriage would mean nothing; regardless of that, he had gone for the most beautiful girl, only for her to pull out at the last minute. He knew having a fever was just an excuse.
That wasn't all; he cleared his throat before attempting to speak again, "And um, I think there was a mistake over at the registry. Someone messed with the system and you accidentally got wedded to another woman. I'll have that fixed."
Luo Chen felt his anger dissolve immediately. He looked over his shoulders briefly. Mei Ting quickly moved her eyes away from him. She was seated now on the couch.
"Don't worry about the mistake and tell the girl not to bother. However, I want you to run a quick search on the girl I'm wedded to and send me a text about your findings in ten minutes." He ordered.
"Yes, boss." Jiao Runchu said and ended the call. He had no idea why Luo Chen had given that order, but from what he knew, Luo Chen wasn't thoughtless.
It all made sense now why she stiffened when he hugged her and didn't hold him back and why she kept insisting that this was a misunderstanding when he called her his wife.
He turned to her and stepped closer.
"I think you are right. There was indeed a misunderstanding." He began, he settled on the couch opposite hers, "but, I think we can make do with it."
Confusion spread across Mei Ting's face as she tried to comprehend what he meant.
Luo Chen finally understood why her eyes were sad, she had made mention of her supposed marriage ending a few hours ago.
For some reason, he didn't like the fact that she was sad; he felt a knot in his stomach upon realizing that she was sad about another man.
"I think Mrs. Jang would know what to do about this so we wouldn't have to bother going through the turbulent process of divorce." Mei Ting said; her voice was lower with each minute she spent here; she was growing weaker. All she wanted to do was lay on her bed.
Luo Chen's eyes twitched as the weight of her words settled. He didn't want to let her go. They were already married and looking for another girl to be his wife would be more troublesome.
Most of all, he couldn't picture any other girl taking that spot at that moment.
"Why not save ourselves the stress and go home together since the knot has already been tied? Your fiance broke off your engagement, and my fiance did the same, what better time can an accident present itself?"
Mei Ting sat straight on her chair, "you want us to remain married?" She asked.
This doesn't make sense.
Luo Chen's phone beeped. Mei Ting's eyes moved to his phone as the screen brightened.
It was a message from Jiao Runchu. The content popped up on the screen briefly, a thumbs-up emoji.
Luo Chen smiled in understanding.
The thumbs-up was a sign that he could go on with her.
"Yes. I want you to be my wife. Become Mrs. Luo." He proposed.
Mrs. Luo. That name rang a bell in her head, she knew she had heard of the name before.
"Mr. Luo, we barely know each other. We just met." This seems like a good opportunity and if she wanted, she could jump right on it. But she didn't want to act rashly. If she did, she feared that what Yang Zichen did may be repeated.
He would leave her when he found out the family she used to belong to.
"We can get to know each other." Luo Chen's lips pulled up in a smile, pleased that that's what she was worried about.
What Mei Ting failed to realise at that moment was that the surname Luo was not just a common surname.
Luo Chen, seated in front of her, was the chairman of the number one conglomerate company in
the country. He can never be a leach like Yang Zichen.
He didn't need to.
