Chapter 53 - Chapter 53: The Grim Reaper's Scythe

In the blink of an eye, the six Mobius units had become nothing more than dust on the Moon's surface. Shi He had successfully claimed the downing of two of them.

"Indeed, it feels smooth; the modifications were a success! Now you can confidently take over the beam weapon team when we return," He Kui remarked, a smile playing on his lips.

The miniaturized beam weapon group held immense potential. Although the miniaturization was complete, there was still much work to be done regarding the further arming of the units, which was still in its infancy.

Beam rifles and beam swords required different power outputs, and with so many weapons needing development, the future beam weapon team would undoubtedly become an essential part of the Hailan Design Bureau.

"I hope so," Shi He replied.

With that, He Kui and Shi He slid down from the cockpit, the initial phase of testing complete, but the cooling system and subsequent trials were still underway. Over the past few days, Shi He had been piloting the experimental beam weapon Sig for minor, low-risk operations, while He Kui focused on data collection. Of course, he also used his director privileges to request some experimental materials for his use.

His side project of building Haros was thriving even on the Moon.

Using the excuse of experiments to acquire materials felt like a nice perk from ZAFT, who were turning a blind eye to their side endeavors.

"It's so nice here with a 24-hour hot water supply," Shi He noted, stepping out barefoot from He Kui's officer quarters bathroom. A towel fluttered with her movements, revealing a glimpse of her fair skin.

Droplets of water glistened in her brown hair, cascading down onto the cold metallic floor.

"Let me help you dry your hair," He Kui offered, standing up from a half-finished Haro on the table.

"Sure!"

Obediently, Shi He settled into He Kui's previous spot, her eyes naturally landing on the half-assembled Haro.

"What's this? It looks a lot more complex and larger than the previous Haros."

The warm airflow from the hairdryer mingled with the scent of shampoo, creating a cozy atmosphere as Shi He curiously inquired.

"It's a targeting assist Haro."

"A targeting assist?"

"Yeah, every time we launch, we need to adjust parameters based on the terrain, and these parameters change in real-time. So, I thought of creating an external computation module that could also modify parameters in real-time and incorporate the Mobius's movement patterns. The Haro just happened to be ready."

"Can the Haro's computer handle that?"

"Not yet. It's still a work in progress; for now, it's sufficient for the Moon, but it still has a long way to go for full terrain adaptability."

With the current military-grade miniaturized computers, it might be possible, but his system wasn't streamlined enough yet.

Completing this would require stronger information engineering skills, and the timeframe was extended. Plus, he needed to allow the Haro's computer to undergo deep learning. Due to all these procedures, it could only serve as a trump card and wouldn't be ready for mass production.

"But… is it okay? With the cooling component still under development?"

"It's coming along."

As He Kui spoke, he picked up a brand-new Haro from the table.

**[You gifted Shi He a Haro Hanifis. Micro-component processing experience +40]**

**[Shi He Hanifis favorability 127]**

**[Experience bonus 6]**

**[Micro-component processing A-Level: (17234/100000)]**

He still needed about ten more Haros. Though it was neither fast nor slow, he could manage one or two a day while analyzing the beam weapon data.

Time flew by, and by the afternoon of the third day on the Moon, as He Kui continued receiving data from the frontlines of the experimental beam weapon Sig, an unexpected communication signal suddenly came through.

"Who is it?"

"Director He, it's Kawakami from the radar group."

"What's the matter?"

Kawakami was a team member who had come over with Sule, and hearing the urgency in his voice made He Kui's eyelids twitch.

"Sule went out today to find suitable radar positions for the experiments. She was supposed to send back communications every ten minutes, but she's gone silent."

"What about her escort?"

"Also unresponsive."

"What does the command center say?"

"They've dispatched a team to investigate. However, since the red-clad units are all on missions…"

The rescue would consist entirely of green-clad units. If the red-clad escort had truly encountered trouble, then bringing in more green-clad units might not be effective.

"Have your units already deployed?"

Kawakami asked, holding onto the last thread of hope.

"Send me the coordinates—I'll see what I can do."

"Alright, Director He. I'm counting on you!"

"Got it."

After hanging up the call, He Kui swiftly changed into his pilot suit and headed to the hangar for preparations.

As the deputy director, he quickly gained access to a reconnaissance Kinn, even without an official order.

Since the experimental beam weapon Sig was already outside, he naturally had the authorization to deploy.

Within minutes, He Kui piloted the reconnaissance Kinn out of the Moon base.

Why was the signal lost at this time and place?

Fortunately, it wasn't far away.

"Come on, Haro."

He Kui was well-prepared for this operation. He quickly removed the obstructive panel beneath the co-pilot console and pulled out a few transmission cables to connect them to the Haro.

"Data connection established. Data takeover complete. Automatic firing parameter mode activated."

The Haro's eyes flickered momentarily before stabilizing. After verifying that the systems were functioning correctly, He Kui's Kinn arrived at the signal location.

The heat of battle was already visible, and Sule's Lorasian-class ship was still intact. However, he noticed…

"Zero-Type Mobius."

He saw four floating cannon turrets suppressing one red-clad unit and two green-clad units. Surrounding them were six standard Mobius units forming a combat squad, causing He Kui's mind to race.

Why were they here at this time and place?

Was it an ambush or reconnaissance?

He Kui landed in the shadows of a lunar crater, the crosshairs of his sniper rifle gradually widening.

"Will I be able to hit?"

The Haro in the co-pilot seat began to smoke instead of replying, focusing on the Zero-Type as it started to emit fumes.

"The action trajectory is too complex; the required calculations are extensive."

He Kui muttered, quickly adjusting his aim to target one of the regular Mobius units instead.

The Haro stabilized just enough for him to proceed, and without hesitation, He Kui pressed the firing button, sending a bullet that accurately struck a critical point on the Mobius unit, obliterating it in an instant.

"The enemy's tracking computer predicted our position with a twenty-five second lead. Continue firing!"

As soon as the order was given, another shot rang out.

At that moment, He Kui's expression was one of absolute focus, devoid of any fluctuation. In the dark and silent cosmos, the bullets he fired glided through the boundless void without a sound—like the Grim Reaper's scythe, striking fear into the hearts of those who witnessed it.

With this newfound support, the red-clad pilot in the Sig fought fiercely, ensuring that the enemy's ace unit couldn't get close.

One shot, two shots, three shots—finally, unde

r the cover of the Zero-Type's cannons, the enemy withdrew, leaving behind their fallen comrades, while He Kui's Haro had completely burned out.
