When Chris woke up early in the morning, the first thing he did was make four Pokéblocks with a Berry mixer.
Each Pokéblock was made exactly to suit the tastes of four different Pokémon—nutritionally balanced, delicious, and not too expensive.
If you buy four berries from the market at the average price, it would cost at least 500 pokédollars. And the Pokéblocks made from that are only enough for one meal at most. A Pokémon with a big appetite, like Makuhita, would need another serving.
At three meals a day, the cost comes to 1,500 pokédollars daily, which adds up to 45,000 pokédollars per month.
That means Chris's monthly Breeder expenses for his four Pokémon would skyrocket to 180,000 pokédollars.
That's a lot more expensive than customizing a Pokémon meal plan at a professional breeding facility.
Luckily, Zigzagoon can pick up berries during battles, reducing the cost. Selling those berries to the store brings only half the price, so Chris keeps them to make more Pokéblocks.
However, he hasn't fully mastered the Berry mixer yet. Out of hundreds of attempts, only three silver "high-quality blocks" and one gold "superior block" have been made.
High-quality blocks and superior blocks are far better in taste and nutrition compared to regular ones.
If his Pokémon consistently consume high-quality Pokéblocks, they'll definitely become stronger than other Breeders' Pokémon!
Even senior or master Breeders wouldn't be able to surpass him!
A unique Pokéblock can even act as a medicinal item. Chris tested one—just one could restore all of Combusken's energy instantly, showing how much nutrition it contained.
Chris plans to save money and buy some land to grow berries himself, then use them to make more Pokéblocks.
Even if he can only make a unique block once in every hundred tries, he'll save them up and train all his Pokémon with these special blocks.
Maybe, he could even train ordinary Pokémon to become legendary Pokémon.
Chris's ambitious thoughts fueled his motivation.
After preparing breakfast for his Pokémon, Chris went for a morning walk. He passed by a familiar breakfast shop and greeted the owner, thinking it was strange that he might not eat such a delicious breakfast again in the future.
Back upstairs, he grabbed his luggage and called for a taxi. Chris headed to the train station in Redwood City.
There, a beautiful woman was already waiting for him.
"Here, over here!" Amy waved to Chris at the entrance of the station.
Chris quickly walked over.
Amy was also from Redwood City, and both the Breeder and Battle departments had military training starting at the same time. So, they decided to travel together.
"You're really early," Chris said, checking his watch. There were still forty-five minutes until the train was set to arrive.
"Of course! I'd rather be early than late," Amy said cheerfully.
They walked together to the waiting room, chatting along the way.
"Military training is coming soon. I'm still a bit excited just thinking about it." Amy's eyes lit up at the mention of it. "I heard the top prize for this training is a Dragon-type Pokémon from the East China Sea Dragon Nest!"
Chris raised his eyebrows. When he thought of military training, the first image that came to mind was standing in the sun, wearing a camouflage uniform, marching in line.
But now, a Dragon-type Pokémon as a reward?
Oh, right. Chris suddenly remembered that Pokémon University's military training was completely different from what he'd experienced in regular universities.
At ordinary universities, military training was just like in his previous life, with basic drills and physical training. But at Pokémon University, although military instructors still led the training, the content was unique.
It combined wilderness survival, Pokémon battles, and much more.
And before the official tests even began, students underwent rigorous evaluations during military training.
Considering the battles and exams, it made sense for one of the top universities in the Dragon Kingdom to offer a Dragon-type Pokémon as a prize.
As for the East China Sea Dragon Nest that Amy mentioned, it was one of three official habitats for Dragon-type Pokémon in China. These included the Capital Dragon Nest in the capital, the Central Dragon Nest in the ancient capital, and the East China Sea Dragon Nest near Dragon.
Other universities in the Dragon Kingdom might offer rewards for military training, but only Capital University, Central University, and Dragon University had the privilege of offering Dragon Pokémon directly.
"Man, I'm so jealous of your Breeder department. You guys get a free Pokémon just for enrolling. Meanwhile, we have to fight for the top spot to win one."
"Huh? Free Pokémon?" Chris looked at Amy, puzzled.
"You didn't know?" Amy raised an eyebrow.
"What am I supposed to know?"
"The military training for your Breeder department involves hatching a Pokémon egg with your own hands. And the Pokémon you hatch becomes your first Pokémon. It's a special perk Dragon University gives to Breeders," Amy explained.
"Where did you hear that?" Chris asked.
"Where? It's common knowledge! Dragon University has been doing this every year; they've never changed it."
Chris pulled out his phone to check.
Sure enough, it was true.
As the nation's top Pokémon Breeder University, the Breeder department was known for offering excellent perks to its students.
However, it wasn't exactly how Amy had described.
The Breeder department did give students a Pokémon egg to hatch, but the battle department's competition for a Dragon-type Pokémon was more nuanced. It wasn't military training that determined who got the Dragon Pokémon. Instead, it was an open, bottom-up competition available to all freshmen.
All freshmen could participate, but over the years, the winners had always come from the battle department. Eventually, it became a tradition that Dragon-type Pokémon were seen as a reward for the battle students.
"So, if it's an open competition for all freshmen, then… I can join too?" Chris's eyes gleamed with newfound interest.
In the standard map version of Pokémon Emerald, Dragon-types like Altaria, Kingdra, and Bagon could be obtained.
Chris wasn't interested in Kingdra. Altaria wasn't bad, but what he really wanted was a pseudo-legendary Dragon-type Pokémon.
To catch a Bagon, though, he'd need to visit Meteor Falls after mastering the eighth HM move, "Waterfall." That meant he'd have to defeat the eighth gym first.
That was too long to wait.
