Check out my other novel Pokemon: A different ash (Also in patreon )
Early the next morning, Chris and Trevor set off from home to Redwood Wetland with a travel bag.
Knowing he was heading to Redwood Wetland the next day, Chris had spent over five hours brushing on the first night before falling asleep at 11 o'clock.
In those five hours, he encountered fifteen Ralts. The best one had 3V in physical strength, physical attack, and speed. It was quite a promising find.
However, Chris had high standards. 3V wasn't enough for him—he wanted at least 4V or 5V.
The issue was, it was still a male.
A male Gardevoir?
No way!
No way! (super loud)
No way! (Overdrive)
Important things need to be said three times.
Between Gallade and Gardevoir, Chris still preferred the latter.
The income from the rubbish-picking team reached 23,000 PokéDollars, bringing Chris's bank balance to 38,000.
He remembered saving that much only after two years of work in his previous life. Now, at eighteen, it took just two days!
Chris felt a bit embarrassed.
They took the bus to the city gate of Redwood City, where they were greeted by a nearly five-meter-high wall.
In this world's history, ancient Pokémon were also referred to as "Warcraft."
Pokémon used to attack humans frequently, so it was natural that many city walls were built—and they still stand in modern times.
At the city gate, a team of city guards stood on duty, wearing blue police uniforms. Each held a Growlithe by their side, with a Pidgeotto perched on their shoulders.
They looked pretty cool!
Chris couldn't help but take a few more glances as they passed.
Beyond the city gate, they headed north. About ten minutes later, they arrived at the bustling entrance to Redwood Wetland.
There were people coming and going, with lots of activity and traffic.
Most of the crowd were Trainers. As they ventured through Redwood Wetland, they occasionally found Berries and Pokémon items. A market had sprung up here, buying unwanted Trainer items and selling potions like Potion and Antidote.
Trevor had already stocked up before arriving, and Chris had supplies stored in the Pokémon Center computer on his handheld device, which was more than enough.
Once inside the Redwood Wetland, Trevor sent out his Pokémon.
A garlic king —oops, wrong, a Bulbasaur.
Though still young, Trevor's family was far wealthier than Chris's. Trevor's parents had become well-off when he was in middle school. If it weren't for Chris's good grades in the high school entrance exam, the two of them might not have even stayed in touch as alumni.
"Hey, Brother Chris, what do you think of Oddish? It can feed itself as long as there's sunshine, so it's easy to take care of. Its final evolutions—Bellossom and Vileplume—are both solid," Trevor said, pointing to an Oddish wandering by the roadside.
Chris pulled out his Poké Ball.
"But it evolves into Gloom, and the smell is unbearable. Plus, Bellossom and Vileplume need Evolution Stones, which are really expensive. Forget it, let's not waste a Poké Ball." Trevor, looking disgusted, pushed Chris's hand down as they kept walking.
"How about Ekans? Poison-type Pokémon are sneaky, great for surprise attacks. And when it evolves into Arbok, it learns Glare, which can paralyze opponents. It's pretty effective!"
Chris took out his Poké Ball again.
"Forget it, poison-type Pokémon are hard to raise. Ekans eats a ton of meat every day, and it doesn't even look good. Bringing it around will ruin your chances with girls in the future." Trevor once again pressed down Chris's Poké Ball and continued walking.
"Just catch one already, it doesn't have to be such a hassle," Chris said, though he wasn't too eager to raise Ekans either.
"How can your first Pokémon be picked so carelessly?" Trevor replied, full of conviction. "Just steps away is Redwood Pond, where we can fish. I've heard people have caught Feebas there."
Chris opened his mouth but stopped himself from mentioning that he already had a Pokémon.
The area they were in, classified as an E-level danger zone, was relatively safe. The Pokémon here were either mild or not very strong. Even people without Pokémon wouldn't be in danger as long as they were careful.
With Bulbasaur leading the way, the two made steady progress.
Soon, they arrived at their destination, Redwood Pond.
Calling it a "pond" was a bit of an understatement. It was more like a small lake, with lotus leaves floating on the surface. Several Poliwags lazily dozed on the leaves, and pink lotus flowers were scattered across the water. Beneath the leaves, Magikarp and Goldeen darted by in quick flashes.
Around the pond, three or four Trainers had already set up umbrellas. These could double as rain covers, as Redwood City often had rain, especially during the transition between summer and autumn when typhoons were common. Fishing in the rain was a real possibility.
Trevor expertly set up their own parasol.
The small stools were ready, and he pulled out a fishing rod, preparing to cast his line.
"Before we start fishing, remember the first rule: a true fisherman never comes home empty-handed! Oye!" Trevor yelled with enthusiasm.
Chris expected someone to shush him, afraid he'd scare away the fish. But, to his surprise, someone nearby shouted back, "Ouye!"
"Do you come here to fish often?" Chris asked.
"Not really. I've only been here three times. My brother usually brings me," Trevor replied as he skillfully cast his line and set up the rod on its stand.
Trevor's older brother, Zhang Tiante, was five years older and didn't hang out with Chris and the others. He was also a Trainer now.
"How about it? Wanna give it a try?" Trevor offered, pulling another fishing rod from his bag.
"Nah, I'll just watch," Chris said, though he wasn't very interested in fishing. He sat on his stool, pulled out his handheld, and continued his quest.
Ralts, you won't escape me this time!
Within five minutes, Trevor got his first bite—a Magikarp.
Magikarp are known to be easy catches, biting quickly.
"It's just a Magikarp, wasting my bait," Trevor grumbled, ready to toss it back.
Chris quickly stopped him. "Since we caught it, let's keep it."
"Brother Chris, are you seriously going to keep a Magikarp?" Trevor asked, surprised by his sudden interest.
"Let's see," Chris said as he reached for a Poké Ball.
Trevor had Bulbasaur sprinkle some Sleep Powder over the Magikarp, which looked more like he was dusting it with spices.
Magikarp's weak "Struggle" was barely noticeable, and Chris captured it with ease.
Picking up the Poké Ball from the ground, Chris pocketed it without bothering to check the catch. He then turned his attention back to his handheld device.
Still the usual—Torchic and five Zigzagoons in his pick-up team.
Wait, what?
Chris quickly controlled his in-game character to return to the Pokémon Center, where he found a Magikarp waiting for him in the PC.
As he suspected, the Pokémon he caught in real life could also be used in the game!
