Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: Into the wild

The morning sun cast a muted glow through the cracked windows of the orphanage, illuminating the dust particles dancing in the stale air. Kael sat in his wheelchair, a small bundle of belongings on his lap-everything he had left in this world.

Today marked the end of his life as an orphan; he was being expelled, but he was not truly alone anymore.

His heart raced with a mix of dread and anticipation. The weight of the rat's presence beside him reminded him that he was no longer just a discarded child. They were bound now, two lost souls venturing into the unknown together.

As he wheeled himself toward the front door, the hallways felt eerily silent. Each turn of the wheels echoed like a countdown to his departure. He pushed through the entrance, taking one last look at the orphanage that had been both a refuge and a prison.

Outside, the world stretched before him, a vast wilderness filled with untamed beauty and lurking dangers. The sprawling trees stood tall, their branches swaying gently in the wind, as if beckoning him to explore. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and the faint rustle of leaves, a stark contrast to the stale confines of his previous home.

"Are you ready for this?"

Kael murmured to the rat, who had settled on his lap, its tiny body warm against his skin. The rat responded with a twitch of its nose, a small gesture that felt like a silent affirmation. Kael took a deep breath, steeling himself for the journey ahead.

He wheeled himself forward, navigating the uneven terrain with a sense of newfound determination. The shadows of the trees loomed overhead, casting a cool shade that felt refreshing against the morning sun. Despite the thrill of freedom, Kael couldn't shake the fear that gnawed at his insides. The wilderness was unfamiliar, and he had no idea what awaited him.

"Here goes nothing..."

As he traveled deeper into the forest, the sounds of wildlife filled the air. Birds chirped overhead, and the rustling of small animals scuttling through the underbrush echoed around him. He felt both exhilarated and terrified-this was a world where danger lurked behind every corner.

After hours of navigating the dense, overgrown foliage, the sun had begun to sink beneath the horizon, casting long shadows across the forest floor. Night was fast approaching.

Kael's heart raced as he pushed through the thick underbrush, his arms aching from hours of exertion.Kael stumbled upon a rocky outcrop that seemed to provide a natural shelter.

As he neared, he noticed a small cave at the base of the outcrop, its entrance low and uninviting. The darkness within seemed to stretch endlessly, and for a moment, he hesitated. A cool draft wafted out from the cave, carrying with it a faint, earthy scent. It whispered of safety from the elements, but also of hidden dangers lying in wait.

"Do you think it's safe?"

He asked the rat, feeling foolish for seeking reassurance from a creature so small. The rat wriggled its nose, as if urging him to enter.

With a deep breath, Kael wheeled himself inside. The cave was dark and damp, but it offered a sense of security. He found a relatively flat area near the back and positioned his wheelchair carefully, creating a small sanctuary amidst the shadows.

Once settled, Kael pulled out his meager belongings: a few pieces of stale bread, a small blanket, and a rusty knife he took from the orphanage. It wasn't much, but it was all he had.

The rat explored the cave, its tiny paws pattering against the stone as it sniffed every corner.

"Alright," Kael said, his voice echoing softly in the enclosed space.

"We need a plan. We can't stay here forever. I don't know how to fight or hunt, and..."

"I don't know what lies ahead."

He thought about the skills the other children had already begun to hone-skills that would protect them in this harsh world. A pang of jealousy twisted in his stomach, but he quickly pushed it aside. The rat scampered back to him, settling beside his wheel as if sensing his turmoil.

"Maybe we can figure something out together,"

He whispered, looking down at his companion.

"I may not grow strong like they do, but I have you. And you... you're not just a rat anymore...."

"That's right! I should give you a name. I can't just call you 'rat' forever, right, partner?"

The rat squeaked, as if agreeing, and Kael grinned.

"How about... Remy? What do you think?"

The rat squeaked happily, its dark eyes sparkling with a newfound vibrancy.

As night fell, the cave darkened, and the sounds of the wilderness transformed into an eerie symphony of rustling leaves and distant howls.

Kael wrapped the blanket around his shoulders, feeling the chill seep into his bones. He stared into the depths of the cave, thoughts racing as he contemplated their uncertain future.

"Tomorrow, we'll explore. We need to find food,"

He decided, determination rising within him.

"But for now, we should rest. We have a long journey ahead."

Remy snuggled closer, its warmth seeping into Kael's side. As he closed his eyes, a sense of comfort washed over him, mingled with anxiety. They were in this together, and despite the unknown dangers that lay outside, he felt a flicker of hope. They would face whatever challenges awaited them-together.
