As dawn broke, golden sunlight streamed through the partially open window of Ivel's chamber, gently pulling him from the depths of sleep. Blinking against the light, he groggily rose and stretched, a sense of purpose beginning to warm within him. He moved to the balcony, where the view of the elven kingdom sprawled beneath him, adorned in hues of green and gold. The morning sun illuminated the sprawling gardens and shimmering river that wound through the palace grounds.
Breathing in the crisp, fresh air, Ivel felt a renewed determination swell within him. Today was a new day, full of promise, and he was ready to embrace it. After soaking in the beauty of the moment, he changed into more formal attire—a crisp tunic adorned with intricate patterns that reflected the elegance of elven craftsmanship—before heading to the royal food hall.
Upon entering the hall, the tantalizing aromas of breakfast wafted towards him, a feast awaiting its guests. As he scanned the room, he quickly spotted Lirael at the table, her presence illuminating the space around her. "Good morning, Lirael!" he called, a smile breaking across his face.
She looked up, her face lighting up as she returned the greeting, "Good morning, Ivel!"
Ivel noticed her cheeks tinted with a blush, which only made him smile wider. "Where's Kaelion?" he asked as he took a seat across from her.
"He's coming soon," she replied, her eyes briefly flicking away, and Ivel caught a hint of shyness in her voice.
Just then, King Alarion, Queen Elenara, Kaelion, and Faelar arrived, filling the room with chatter and warmth. The table was soon bustling with food and laughter, creating an atmosphere that felt both joyous and intimate. Ivel couldn't help but glance over at Lirael several times, noticing her looking back at him, her face blooming with color.
"Here," she said suddenly, reaching for something sweet from a nearby plate. "You have to try this; it's really delicious!"
Curiosity piqued, Ivel accepted the treat from her hand. He took a bite, and as the flavors danced on his tongue, he grinned appreciatively. "This is amazing! What is it?"
Lirael's eyes sparkled. "It's a special recipe from our kitchen. I'm glad you like it!"
As they shared a moment, Kaelion leaned in close to Ivel and whispered with a playful smirk, "What's going on between you and Lirael? She's been smiling at you since yesterday."
Flustered, Ivel stuttered, "N-nothing is going on! She's just being nice for helping her, that's all!"
Kaelion laughed softly, teasing, "Sure, sure. Keep telling yourself that!"
Breakfast continued amidst good-natured banter until King Alarion cleared his throat, signaling the end of the meal. Just as Ivel began to rise, the king called out, "Ivel, could you please wait a moment? I'd like to speak with you privately."
With a nod, Ivel followed the king as he led him towards a lesser-known passageway that wound deeper into the heart of the palace. "How are you today, your Majesty?" Ivel asked, genuine curiosity in his voice.
The king smiled, though there was a somber undercurrent. "I'm well, but I have something of great importance to share with you. I've learned of the tragedy that befell your family. I knew your father, King Edric, quite well and called him my friend."
Ivel's heart raced at the mention of his father. "You did?"
"Yes, and I want you to know that I shall support you in regaining your honor. You are a valued guest in this kingdom, and I will lend my aid to you in any way I can."
Ivel's gratitude swelled, and he bowed his head respectfully. "Thank you, your Majesty. That means a lot to me. Is there any way I could use a mana gate to travel back to Eldoria?"
"Of course," King Alarion replied. "You are like a son to me, and the Ellen Empire will always stand by you whenever you need it."
The king led Ivel into a grand vault filled with treasures—legendary swords, bows, axes, and ornate wands glimmered under the soft light. "Choose any treasure you wish," the king encouraged.
After surveying the assortment, Ivel's eyes fell upon an exquisite armor set of white, accented with shades of yellow, resting on a pedestal. "I would like to have this one," Ivel declared.
The king nodded approvingly. "That armor belonged to Falren, the founder of the Ellen Empire. He was renowned for his extraordinary skills in archery and magic. You, Ivel, are worthy of this armor, and I believe it will serve you well on your journey."
Ivel felt a surge of pride as he carefully donned the armor, its weight surprisingly comforting. "Thank you, your Majesty. Once I reclaim my kingdom, I will invite you and your family to a grand festival in celebration."
"Then I shall hold you to that promise," the king replied with a warm smile. "Now, go and prepare for your journey. You have many trials ahead, but know that you are not alone."
With the armor gracefully fitted, Ivel thanked the king once more before making his way down to the archery range, eager to share the exciting news with Kaelion and Lirael. The sun hung high in the sky, casting a golden hue over the training grounds where Kaelion was practicing.
"Ivel!" Kaelion shouted, pausing mid-arrow release. "You're back! What happened?"
Ivel wasted no time in recounting his encounter with King Alarion and how he had received the legendary armor. Kaelion's eyes widened with astonishment. "You got Falren's armor? That's incredible! You're really fortunate to have obtained such a treasure. If anyone deserves it, it's you."
Flushed with excitement, Ivel replied, "I appreciate it, Kaelion. But I need to discuss something important. I'll be leaving soon to regain my honor and return to Eldoria."
At this, Lirael, who had been practicing her archery nearby, suddenly looked up, surprise and sadness etched across her face. "You just got here, Ivel! You can't leave already!"
"I have to, Lirael." Ivel's voice softened, sensing her distress. "My people need me. I must restore what has been lost."
Lirael's expression fell, leaving her silent for a moment. Without warning, she turned and fled, disappearing into the palace's interior. Ivel looked at Kaelion, bewildered. "Why did she run?"
Kaelion shrugged, a knowing glint in his eyes. "I think she doesn't want you to go. Maybe you should figure it out since you're so smart."
Later that evening, with thoughts of Lirael swirling in his mind, Ivel made his way to her room. He hesitated briefly before knocking gently on the door. "It's Ivel. May I come in?"
Lirael opened the door cautiously, a mix of emotions flickering across her face. Once inside, he closed the door behind him. "I'm sorry for leaving so soon," he began, regret lacing his words. "But I promise I'll return as soon as I can. You'll see me again."
He reached into his pocket, pulling out the box of treats she had given him the previous night. "Here, I brought you one!" He offered, presenting it with a smile.
Lirael took the treat and popped it into her mouth in an endearing manner, her earlier sadness momentarily forgotten. "Fine, but you'd better come back soon," she warned playfully, doing her best to appear stern while a smile tugged at her lips. "Or I'll be mad!"
They shared a laugh together, the weight of their unspoken feelings hanging gently in the air around them. Time passed quickly as they exchanged stories and dreams, but soon the evening light began to fade.
Rising to leave, Lirael looked up at him, her expression softening. "Goodbye, Ivel," she said, stepping forward and wrapping her arms around him in a warm hug.
Ivel returned the embrace, feeling a pang of longing at the thought of their separation. "Goodbye, Lirael. I promise to return safe," he whispered, his heart heavy with the promise.
As he stepped away, Lirael called out after him, "Goodnight! Return safely and don't overdo it out there!"
Turning back, Ivel caught her comforting smile, which brought a sense of calm to his tumbling thoughts. He nodded, grateful for her kindness, before stepping out of her room, a smile lingering on his lips.
After retiring to his chamber that night, Ivel made his preparations for the journey ahead. He vowed to himself that he would muster all his strength, reclaim his honor, and return to Lirael and her kingdom. As he settled down for sleep, he couldn't help but think of their shared moments and the warmth that lit up his heart, knowing that a great adventure awaited him at dawn. Dreams of Eldoria danced in his mind, filled with hope and the promise of new beginnings.
