"Up! Get up! Now!"

Hadrian woke up with a start. His aunt rapped on the door again.

"Up!" She screeched and then went to the kitchen she put the frying pan on the stove and then came to slam at the door again, "Are you up yet?" She demanded.

"Nearly," said Hadrian as he slowly got up.

Today, it was his aunt's son's, meaning his fat cousin, Dudley's birthday and so, she wanted him to cook the breakfast perfectly.

When he was dressed, he went down the hall into the kitchen. The table was almost hidden beneath all Dudley's birthday presents.

But the big, fat boy, was throwing a tantrum just because he got one less present than last year...

'What a luxurious misery...' Hadrian thought as he stood in front of the stove, silently obeying his aunt's orders.

To calm Dudley's tantrum, his parents offered him more presents and a visit to a zoo. But they were worried that Hadrian might somehow enjoy himself at home being alone...

"I suppose we could take him to the zoo," said his Aunt slowly, "... and leave him in the car..."

"No, the car is new, he's not sitting in it alone."

After some lamenting and warnings of heavy beatings, they decided to take Hadrian to the zoo too. They could sure come up with new threats for him.

Zoo... a place where animals were stripped of their freedom, fed the necessary sustenance, and made to live in small spaces called Cages.

'We aren't that dissimilar, huh...' the eleven-year-old Hadrian thought.

And today marked another branching of this universe... Something, or someone... interfered.

Something really strange happened at the zoo today. A snake talked to Hadrian, Dudley fell down on the snake's cage when the mirror suddenly vanished. And the weirdest thing that happened was... the snake puking out a book as thank you when it escaped.

Hadrian knew his Aunt would snatch it away from him so he hid it inside his T-shirt, and when he did so, the book became thin as paper and latched itself on Hadrian's stomach, like a second skin.

'Ah, so that's how it was able to stay inside that snake. I knew that this book was strange...' Hadrian thought.

Later that day, after the commotion in the zoo, after some unfair beatings and scolding from his Uncle, after being thrown in his room which was the small closet below the stairs, Hadrian finally separated the book from his stomach.

The book returned to its normal size, and when he wiped the book with a sock, he could see its title - Laws of Power.

'Hmm...' Opening the book, Hadrian went through the contents of the book...

Chapter 20: A Choice.

After Chapter 20, the rest of the contents were blurred, he flipped through the book and found out that after Chapter 20, the pages were blank.

'I think, I get it. It's quite obvious. This book is not ordinary, it's something magical, or at least something that isn't ordinary in our world. The pages might reveal themselves after I make "A Choice"... what kind of choice... I'll have to figure out by reading it...'

Hadrian found this interesting... too interesting! Besides, this was the first time he got something like a gift...

The escape of the snake from the zoo earned Hadrian his longest-ever punishment. For a week he wasn't even allowed out of his cupboard. Thankfully, he was given a bare minimum of food and water to survive.

Oh, he was allowed toilets and baths as it would smell really bad if he couldn't hold it and excreted the waste in his cupboard.

By the time he was allowed out of his cupboard again summer holidays had started, and Hadrian had finished reading 7 chapters of the book.

From the next day, he would wake up to his Aunt's yellings, do chores, get beat up by his fat cousin and his friends, get beat up by his uncle when he sometimes tried to fight back or run away, and whenever he was left alone, he would read the book.

Honestly, his punishment in the cupboard felt more like a reward instead.

'Sigh, I guess today's chores are done. I'll do an assignment of medium difficulty this time...' Hadrian thought as he limped back to his cupboard.

Today was awfully harsh for him, Dudley ran the motorbike he got on his birthday on Hadrian's legs. When he tried to take the ointment from a cupboard, he was beaten by his Aunt who accused him of stealing food...

These events weren't just bad luck, he could have avoided them if he didn't let his guard down.

'Well, another lesson learned, I suppose.'

After locking his room/cupboard from inside, he opened the book again. The book armed Hadrian with knowledge, addictive knowledge, and wisdom. The book even had magical assignments.

To begin those assignments, he would have to chant the spell written in the book and then he would be put under an illusion where he would have to solve a real-life situation using his wits, knowledge, and wisdom gained from the book to accomplish the mission.

After a month of getting the book, he had finished 19 whole chapters with all assignments.

'Huh? There is only a single assignment in this chapter. Nothing else...'

This was the 20th chapter, "A Choice".

The assignment was to protect a kingdom from invasion from a neighboring nation with 10x military prowess. The time limit was 1 month. A good thing about this single assignment was that he could give it any amount of attempts.

'I have learned battle formation and strategies in a previous assignment, they might come in handy in this one. It was a five-year-long mission.'

As he read the spell written in the book, drowsiness took over. This was completely normal, now he would find himself in a dream, an illusion where he would have to accomplish the task given to him.

When Hadrian opened his eyes, he found himself in an adult body. He checked his pocket to find a small knife and 10 gold coins. He was also given a mission-exclusive skill: Ultimate Swordsmanship.

The mission-exclusive skills were temporary abilities granted to him that would disappear once the dream was over. Fortunately, the experience remained. So, he does gain some level of proficiency if the skills aren't too absurd.

And no matter how much time, days, or months, he spent on his assignments, he would wake up just the next day in real life.

He knew the fact because he had spent even longer time on previous missions. Years even.

Hadrian may be just 11 physically but his mental age is already far older if he counted the time he spent in the missions.

After entering the dream, a sentence floated in front of him. He was given "A Choice"...

Accomplish this assignment by being on the :

Good path

Evil path

Hadrian thought for a bit...

The schools did say that being 'good' is good, and 'bad' is bad, but those were just words.

The book, however, taught him that better and in a more realistic way.

Goodness, he learned and realized, was often a luxury afforded by those who could afford it. It required sacrifice, selflessness, and a disregard for personal gain.

It didn't suit him. The book gave him knowledge, it also opened his eyes to who he truly was. And he wasn't a person who could sacrifice.

He was just weak... That's why he bore the suffering that his guardians made him go through.

It was always for survival, for living...

And Hadrian realized something about himself, that he valued self-interest above everything else...

The path to self-interest was called 'Evil' by the religious books and society.

For fuck's sake! There were concepts such as seven deadly sins to tell the masses how basic human needs and desires that were instilled in their beings for the purpose of survival were evil sins!

'I have already figured out what path I actually want to take. But for the first attempt, I'll choose the 'Good path'...

The book gave an indefinite amount of attempts for this single assignment. It was as if it 'wanted' him to explore both options.

Hadrian planned the mission, he gave it his all... But despite all his efforts he lost...

.

.

.

The mission was set in a medieval period.

As a good, kind person, he was ignored and underestimated at first, when he displayed his skills he was exploited by an influential noble. After gaining the noble's trust when he warned the noble of the upcoming invasion and asked him to prepare his personal army to protect the kingdom.

The noble ran away the next day.

'Sigh, I expected as much...'

Somehow near the last week, he reached the king by proving his skills and getting acknowledged for his "right virtue". But when he warned the King of the upcoming invasion and asked him to prepare the army to protect the kingdom.

The king ran away with the royal guards and treasures the next day...

It seemed hopeless, but Hadrian somehow motivated the king's younger brother to lead the army and protect the kingdom. And Hadrian himself participated in frontlines but he was killed when 4 enemy elites ganged up on him.

The hardship, the betrayal, the trauma, and the helplessness were too much for even a grown-ass man, and Hadrian was just an 11-year-old kid...

But when Hadrian woke up, he just cracked his neck with an annoyed glare.

This much could never affect his mental state. Hadrian has completed several missions by now. With the knowledge, wisdom, and experience he gained from the previous chapters, he was more than enough mature for such missions.

"Bastards..." Hadrian cursed.

The fact that he was looked down on, exploited, and betrayed even in a dream pissed him off a lot. And all of this just because he needed to be righteous? Good?

He knew it. He wasn't made for it.

'Fuck it...'

Two days later, he attempted the assignment once again.

This time he chose the Evil path...

Once again, he found himself in an adult body, had a pocket knife, and 10 gold coins on him. The mission-exclusive skill: Ultimate Swordsmanship, was too bestowed upon him.

Hadrian skipped the information-gathering phase of his mission, he had already done this for this mission in his previous attempt.

Hadrian knew this kingdom from the inside out. The king was a coward, his brother a fool, and the nobles were selfish leeches. But that didn't concern him.

He had one goal, and he'll see it end on his terms.

Hiring a few goons from the market, using the gold coins, he kidnaps the daughter of the same noble who exploited him in the previous attempt. It was rather easy, she used to sneak out of the castle in disguise after all.

Using her as a hostage, he made the noble his puppet. The noble had royal connection, of course, and so, Hadrian spent the next week manipulating the king's younger brother into joining him, the bait was the throne.

In just next week, he made the younger brother of the king, the actual king, though just as the younger brother sat on the throne, Hadrian decapitated him.

"I fulfilled my promise, your Highness. Made you the king even if it was for a moment..."

The army behind Hadrian hailed him as he put the crown above his own head with a satisfied smile. His puppet noble clapped his hands as if his life depended on it.

Well by now, he had no choice but to follow him. In the past three weeks, Hadrian had broken his daughter, now she only knew one thing in this world Hadrian and nothing else. She even threatened her father to kill herself if anything happened to Hadrian.

As Hadrian sat on the throne, he gripped the armrest, 'This feeling of power... even though it's just an illusion...'

.

.

.

Now, that he was the king, he had an actual fighting chance against the invasion that was due next week.

"But you Highness, this... I can't agree to this... I didn't object to working alongside bandits and criminals to make up for the short military power but using women and children as human shields on the frontlines for your strategies is too much!" The captain of the royal guards spoke up, his expression a mix of disgust and disbelief.

Hadrian sighed, in fact, he agreed with the Captain. It's a really poor strategy. If I wanted to rule for a long time, tyranny wasn't a good choice. At least not unless he had absolute power.

However, the thing was Hadrian just needed to prevent the invasion. The aftermath didn't matter.

So, Hadrian turned to the Captain, "You have a family, yes. A wife, two daughters, and a son. If the enemy's invasion is successful, they would rape your wife and daughters, enslave them if their cunts pleases them enough, slit their throats after brutal thrasing when they get bored, and of course, just pray that they give your son a quick death." Hadrian gave him a moment to imagine the horrors.

"I know you're rather virtuous, Captain" He patted his shoulder, "But it's not worth sacrificing your family for. It is the sacrifice of a few unrelated people in the slums or your dear wife and children."

After contemplating a bit, the Captain simply sighed, "Do as you wish..."

Captain agreed fairly easily. Well, Hadrian would have just kidnapped the Captain's family if he protested too much.

Hadrian didn't have too much time to spare for just changing the mind of a mere Captain, however, he also couldn't simply replace him. The soldiers trusted the Captain and his replacement might have resulted in discord. And he needed all the hands he could get.

That's why he wouldn't hesitate to use harsh means...

.

.

.

.

Since now the command was completely within Hadrian's hands, the preparation for defense went smoothly. Any protests were quieted down by money, manipulation, or blackmail.

And in no time it was the day of the invasion...

"Just as you predicted, your Highness. The soldiers of the empire found themselves to be hesitating when they found women and children being used as human shields. The mercenary group (Bandits, criminals, and prisoners) used the moment of their hesitation to their fullest."

Hadrian nodded as he eyed the battlefield from a high point.

"The other units are showing results as well. Your innovative battle formations were found completely unpredictable by the enemy soldiers. It is just those 4 enemy individuals, that we are finding rather troublesome."

Hadrian nodded, 'Must be the ones that ganged up and killed me in my last attempt. I shall have a good revenge.'

.

.

.

All in all, the mission was a success.

Through any means necessary, he completed the book's assignment and woke up the next morning with a feeling of satisfaction.

His mind felt clearer than ever. It was as if he had found a new purpose.

'That Throne...' Hadrian thought.

The sheer power he had on the masses when he was on that throne...

It felt good. The feeling of power was truly addictive...
